HERO (The Complete Series)

“Fuck. I’m coming, Amanda,” he growled out, clenching his teeth to hold back an even louder roar as he plunged deeper into me with sharp jerks.
I bit down on my lip, even with my hand already covering my mouth, trying to subdue the squeal I knew would escape at this invigorating peak. His hot, wet release exploded into me, and my body quaked and convulsed as I came with him, grinding into his groin to extend the sensation. When he was finished, he lowered my leg and pulled me up into his warm, safe chest. He wrapped me in an embrace that was a clear reminder why I couldn’t say no to this man. I was addicted.
We didn’t move for a few minutes. I was basking in the buzz of being completely satiated.
“Admit it,” he said. “You enjoyed that so much, getting caught by Kevin doesn’t matter so much anymore.”
I laughed softly. “I’m not sure I’d put it quite that way, but yes, I really enjoyed it.”
“Good.”
“We should get dressed now,” I told him, although I was just as reluctant to get up.
Johnny lifted off me and kissed my cheek. “You’re probably right. If I stay here any longer I’m going to have to take you all over again.”
I smiled playfully as I got off the counter to neaten myself up. I felt the same way. “That’s exactly why I told you I couldn’t sleep in the same bed with you that night. Remember?”
“Of course.”
I got dressed quickly—with my dress on the right way this time. I popped up on my tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek. “See you later, Lorne,” I whispered.
He grinned, and let me leave first so I could speak to Fred and his team. It turned out Fred’s update was that the cyber-stalker replied to another post on Johnny’s Twitter account. Jenny was trying out some new IP tracing software to track the source of the message. Our meeting was over in five minutes, so I returned to my seat near the front, passing by Kevin, who was fast asleep. I was settled in long before Johnny came out of the bathroom.
Chapter 3 - Johnny
I closed the restroom door after Amanda left, and jammed the lock in place. I waited in there a few minutes, leaning against the counter. Most of the time was spent thinking of her pressed up against the wall, or sitting on the counter with her legs wrapped around my hips. Her sweet scent was still on my fingers, and the sound of her whimpering my name still echoed in my head. I turned to the sink, washed up and splashed some cold water on my face, wondering how Amanda might react to the Johnny Q Venom persona once we landed in Athens.
A few minutes later, I returned to the front to get some rest. Amanda was already asleep in her seat. She was stretched out, with the side of her face pressed against the window. I sat beside her, put on my seatbelt and tried to relax. Before I drifted off, I looked over at her a few times. It was hard not to stare. My chest tightened as I watched her sleep.
It still seemed surreal that my plan had come together, and she was finally fitting into my life. It was not the most ideal situation—considering I had not come clean about what I wanted, and this was still a part-casual, part-contrived relationship for her. And she was adamant about staying clear of anything remotely serious. Still, what we shared was miles ahead of what I had just a week ago, so to me, that was progress. It could only get better—as long as she could come to terms with my stage personality, and whatever it was that made her resist so strongly against what had been happening between us. I rested my head back and let out a labored breath. I would find out about the former soon enough, but had no idea whether she would open up about the latter.
I turned to her sleeping figure. The blanket she was using had sagged into a ball at her lap. I reached across and lifted it over her shoulders. Without thinking, I brushed a loose strand of hair away from her closed eyes. Out of nowhere, her hand came up and grabbed my wrist in a bone-clenching grip. I let out a short yelp of pain and her eyes opened after a second. A look of recognition slowly appeared on her face, and then one of shock when she realized what she had done.
“Oh! Sorry Johnny! I didn’t mean to do that!” she exclaimed, releasing my arm. She sat up in her chair, the blanket falling away again. “Are you okay?”
I rubbed my wrist to relieve the burning pain where she had held on to me. That grip was pretty impressive. “Holy crap, Amanda. You’re still so strong!” I blurted out. “I mean…Yes. I’m fine. It was my fault. I didn’t mean to scare you. I was just…I didn’t want you to get cold.”
She glanced up at me, still dazed from sleeping. She looked down at the blanket and thanked me, then continued to stare at me, as though expecting more of an explanation. I had nothing else to say—unless I wanted to confess everything—I smiled and leaned my head back again. The pilot came on the speaker and announced we would be landing at JFK shortly, so Amanda didn’t pursue it further.
Kevin called us all back to speak with him after we touched down in New York. Schedules had been thrown so far off that with the time difference, we would arrive in Athens late on Sunday. This would give us very little time to clear customs, and no time to shake off our jetlag before my performance.
He was able to call ahead, and suggested a shorter performance due to the later kick-off time. The family was understanding, and offered to move the private performance to Monday. They had been celebrating for several days straight, and planned to be on the island for another week. The birthday girl also preferred to get the full performance. Kevin was agreeable, and so was Fred. It would give us an evening to get rested, and enough time for Fred’s men to set up and clear the location. I was tempted to remind Kevin we should not have agreed to this event in the first place, but opted against it, to keep the peace for the moment.
After the new plan was settled, the FBI and Amanda returned to their seats, while he and I reviewed some of the performance sequences. Soon, the plane took off again. Kevin and I ended up working for that entire leg of the flight. It was the first time in a few days that we were able to simply focus on the business of my music, which something we were both passionate about.
The remaining hours passed by quickly before we finally landed at Athens International Airport. By then it was late evening. Fred and his team led the way as we disembarked and made our way through Passport Control and Customs. Amanda followed behind. She had her game face on as she observed the bustling surroundings and people nearby. Because of the schedule change, we would stay overnight at a nearby hotel, and head to the island in the morning.
Kevin spoke to a man waiting for us when we cleared customs. He was one of two drivers that would take us to the hotel tonight, and also to the helicopter landing strip the next morning. We all milled around on the sidewalk, stretching our legs as the vans were loaded up with our luggage. Kevin ran around doing a final check to make sure all of the bags were accounted for. When he was satisfied, he directed us all to get in. Amanda ended up in the other vehicle—probably Kevin’s doing.
The hotel was close to the airport, and we arrived within a few minutes. This time, Kevin led the group and got us checked in. I paid less attention to these details. Amanda was in my sights, and I was curious what she was thinking—and whether I could sneak in some private time with her tonight.
“Rachel, Johnny. Here are your keycards,” Kevin said, turning to me and pressing a small envelope into my hands. “You’re booked in a suite together.”
Amanda approached and my eyebrows shot up, surprised and quite skeptical this development could be Kevin’s doing.
“She’s your girlfriend, remember? The Feds want this little show to be believable. You know how easy it is for the press to get wind of where we’re staying tonight. It would create much more blowback on the cover story if someone leaks that Rachel Preston is not getting it on with her new rock star boyfriend,” he explained.
“Makes sense,” I replied, doing my best to hide my elation.
“But don’t worry. The suite is beside the one I put Fred’s team in, just in case.”
Amanda nodded, and showed no emo
tion about this news. I could not tell if she was putting on an act or genuinely didn’t care about getting a couple of nights alone with me. My delight made it hard to be too concerned about anything else.
“Get some rest, Johnny. Tomorrow is going to be a long day,” Kevin said, a wrinkle of irritation showing between his brows as he spoke.
“Ready?” Amanda asked as we joined the FBI waiting at the elevator bank.
“Yes honey. Let’s go, Rachel,” I answered.
She and the agents flanked me as we rode up to our floor and walked the long hallway to our side-by-side suites. I stood in the entryway while the agents, joined by Amanda, made a sweep of the room. Once everyone was satisfied that the room was safe, the agents reminded us they were just next door if we needed anything, and left.
Chapter 4 - Johnny
Amanda and I were alone again. In our own suite. She still had the same expression of disinterest on her face.
“Are you hungry?” I asked, hoping it was the jetlag that caused her apparent listlessness.
“Starved,” she answered.
“Great,” I told her, stepping close enough to finally pull her in close again. “How about you relax a bit, and I’ll order us room service.”
“Sounds perfect,” she concurred, turning her head to rest her cheek on my chest.
“So everything is okay, right?”
“Definitely.” She looked up at me and I couldn’t resist planting a kiss on her soft lips. “That was a long flight. And…sorry about almost breaking your arm earlier.”
“I’m fine,” I insisted, raising the arm to show her it still worked. “See?”
“Good. I’m glad I didn’t do too much damage.” She gently pulled out of the embrace and went over to her suitcases. “I’m going to change and relax a bit while the food’s coming, okay?”
“Sure. Any preferences for dinner?”
“No idea. It’s hard to tell whether I should have breakfast, lunch or dinner, with that long flight.”
“No doubt.”
“Just surprise me,” she said, yawning, and followed behind me as I carried her suitcases into the bedroom.
I left her to search through her bags, and returned to the living room to find the menu. I ordered several Greek souvlaki and kebab entrees, a couple of salads, and her favorite desserts. Checking the mini-bar, I pulled out a few bottles of sparkling water. Wine or alcohol after such a taxing flight was not going to be any good for either of us. I downed a bottle and opened another while I waited for the food to arrive.
Amanda didn’t return, so I took a bottle for her. She must have been exhausted. I found her curled up under the covers, sleeping peacefully on the king-size bed. The hotel server knocked just then. I went to let him in, and had him leave the large serving cart in the living room. After he left, I had a few bites of one of the steak kebab sticks, used the bathroom, and crawled into bed beside Amanda. It wasn’t long before I also fell asleep.
* * *
Surprisingly, all we did in bed overnight was rest. The alarm woke me up, and I was still so out of it, it was a struggle to sit up in bed. The sheer exhaustion of the long flight made it hard to move. I looked over on the bed and realized Amanda was already gone. My sleepy eyes scanned the room. She wasn’t here. I stumbled out of bed and shuffled to the living room.
“Good morning, Johnny.” her voice chirped out.
She was sitting with Fred and Larry. I nodded and headed to the bathroom for a shower, and quickly got dressed before going back out. The agents and Amanda were seated at the breakfast bar, drinking coffee and eating breakfast pastries with fruit.
“Good morning,” I said on entering.
“Coffee?” Amanda asked.
I nodded and she poured me a cup. Kevin came in with his own key card before I could get the cup to my lips. As usual, his eyes were glued to his watch, and I would have found it entertaining, had I been able to summon up some more energy.
“We have to be downstairs in half an hour,” he announced, looking at the four of us. He focused on Fred. “Are the rest of your men coming?”
“Yes. We were able to get four more agents stationed in the Paris office. They’re already waiting for us down in the lobby.”
“Great. Let’s get them up here now, so we can all leave as a unit. There’s no telling what kind of crowd will be waiting for us downstairs. From here, we’ll drive to a private airstrip and take two helicopters to the island. Someone from Princess Ameena’s royal household family will meet us there to make introductions.” He turned to me and said. “That will give you time to do a sound check with the band members, and get ready for the performance.”
“Who’s this Princess, anyway?” I asked.
“You didn’t read over my booking portfolio, I gather.”
“Maybe I didn’t.”
“Well you’d better get to it on the helicopter ride over. It’s actually two princesses. Best friends. The birthday girl is Princess Marina-Claire of Liechtenstein. She’s turning nineteen. Her best friend is Ameena. It’s her father who booked the gig. She’s actually a Sheikha of one of the Arab Emirates. That’s like a princess, but much richer. Her father owns seven or eight of the private Greek islands.”
“Okay. Well that’s good. Hopefully it’ll be like that private concert I did in Dubai a couple years back.”
“What do you mean?”
“Can’t you remember? The women were all dressed in those floor-length black robes and were very…how should I say…subdued.”
“It won’t be anything like that. And do I have to teach you everything, Johnny? You have fans worldwide. You need to work on being more culturally aware. The robes they wore are traditional Emirati attire. You won’t find this family dressing that way, because this particular Sheikh is more of a Western thinker. His family is not nearly as traditional as most of the Arab royals. They dress and act like westerners. And they all know who Johnny Q Venom is. Many of them have been to your live concerts, so expect to be swarmed.”
“That’s too bad. That Dubai gig was the first time I wasn’t mauled by a crowd of fans. If it’s that tame, I’d be up for doing more private functions for sure.”
“It won’t be anywhere near as calm. But no matter how it goes, remember to address the royal family with ‘your excellency’.”
“Will do. While we’re on the subject, I had to ask, why did you agree to book me to do this private birthday party? We haven’t done private gigs for years.”
“Trust me, it was not part of the plan. I turned them down three times. Her father was insistent, and kept increasing the booking offer. Ameena and Marina-Claire are big fans. Huge. By the time I said yes…well let’s just say the revenue from this two-hour performance alone covers all the costs for the entire seven-city tour. And we’ll be back here at the hotel sometime after midnight, so it doesn’t require you to entertain them for too long.”
“Makes sense.”
“So is everyone clear on the clients?”
Amanda, Fred and Larry nodded in agreement, and I told the group I needed a few minutes to get ready.
“I need a few things from the bathroom,” Amanda added, following behind me. Once in the room she asked, “Did you sleep well?”
“Yes. I was out like a light. You?”
“Same.”
“Good. Glad you got some rest. Hey, can we talk?”
“Definitely,” she said, and turned to face me. “Is something wrong?”
“No, no. It’s just…You’ll see soon enough, but when I’m on the road performing, I’m a bit of a different person. It’s like I have to tune out everything else to get in the zone. You know what I mean?”
“I think so,” she said.
“I don’t want you to think anything’s changed when you see for yourself. I can get a little…well I can become pretty intense with the fans.”
“Noted. I’ll go with the flow, not to worry.” She walked to the bathroom and returned with a small makeup bag, which she
stuffed into her purse. “All ready?”
“Yes,” I told her, swooping in for one last embrace. I kissed her hair, and hoped for the best.
We returned to the living room, and I put on my sunglasses, getting ready to make the shift to rock star mode.
Chapter 5 - Amanda
When we got down to the lobby, we were greeted by a swarm of fans, all holding cameras and phones, snapping pictures of Johnny and his disguised entourage and security detail, including the six FBI agents, Kevin and me—the ex-MMA security guard and picture-ready media-only girlfriend. Fred and his team went out front to clear a path and became human barriers between Johnny and his adoring fans. I fought back my instinct to go help. It would ruin the girlfriend act.
I knew something was off though, when Johnny didn’t reach for my hand or do anything to play up his boyfriend role or even try to use it as an excuse to get close. He had been acting strange since we woke up this morning. It didn’t help that he gave me this obscure caveat that he would be different on tour. I should have braced for the change, but I didn’t, and he seemed to morph into someone else as I followed him through the crowd. Still, I wasn’t too concerned. Back when I was fighting in the MMA, I would get the same way before a fight. I’d put my head into the game hours before entering the ring. I’d clear my thoughts, and only my coach and a few people could get through to me when I was psyching myself up before a fight. Somehow, this was different. And maybe it was my reaction to it.
The problem was that over the past few days, Johnny had made his way over the first set of walls I erected around myself, and I was the one who let him in. Now I was beginning to feel like my brain was stuck in some sort of endless loop. I was certain that messing around with Johnny was a terrible idea. He was only going to end up getting hurt, and I couldn’t have that on my conscious. I had my reasons for staying out of relationships, and had grown used to stepping away from men when it started to feel like more than just fun.
