Bibliography
This is a list of publications used in or referred to in this biography. It is not a complete bibliography of Robert E. Howard's writings, which would constitute a book by itself. In fact it already has, in Glenn Lord's The Last Celt (1976) of 416 pages. Since this volume appeared in 1976, many additional publications of Howard's writings have taken place.
In giving references to Howard's stories, we have tried to pick one publication of a particular story and stick to it. Many of these stories have been reprinted half a dozen or more times since their first appearance.
Two collections of Howard's poetry have appeared under the title Always Comes Evening. The first, published by Arkham House in 1957, was printed in an edition of only 636 copies and is therefore very rare. The second, published by Underwood-Miller in 1977, contains all the poems of the first book, differently arranged, with the addition of one early poem. References to this title are to the second publication.
The collection of Howard's stories published in hard covers by Gnome Press in 1954 under the title Conan the Barbarian should not be confused with the paperbacked novel Conan the Barbarian by Lin Carter, Catherine Crook de Camp, and L. Sprague de Camp, published in 1982 by Bantam Books. The latter is a novelization of the script of the motion picture Conan the Barbarian, in which Robert E. Howard had no direct hand. The same title has also been used for a comic-book series.
