A Bachelor and a Baby

She no longer had the will or the energy to resist. “You’re sure about this?”
“How many ways do I have to say it?”
She glanced over her shoulder at the pages on her bed. She laughed. “You’ve already found plenty of ways to say it.”
“Now I only want you to say one thing.”
She lifted her chin, struggling not to laugh. “One thing.”
He nipped her lower lip. “Wise guy.”
Her smile faded as she became serious. “Not so wise. I walked away from you once.”
“And now?”
“I’m not walking anymore.” Ever again, she promised silently.
Rick nodded, pleased. “Good, then I’ll cancel the work order to put bars and deadbolts on all the windows and doors.”
She laughed. “It wouldn’t have gone with the style of the house anyway.”
It was his turn to grow serious. “The only thing that I care about going with the house is you.”
“Okay.”
But he shook his head. The glib answer wasn’t enough. “I want to hear this formally. Joanna Prescott, will you do me the supreme honor of becoming my wife?”
She could feel her heart swelling with love. “Yes, oh yes.” Throwing her arms around his neck, she kissed him.
Just as the kiss flowered with the promise of passion, they could hear the sound of the baby crying over the baby monitor. Joanna drew back reluctantly. “My baby’s crying, I’d better go to her.”
“Our baby’s crying,” he corrected. “And we’ll both go to her. In a minute.”
He kissed her again, long and hard, just to seal the bargain.
