  I suck in a breath, the air burning my lungs, incinerating them, and a strangled sound claws up my throat. Caiden looks at me a moment before reaching out and clutching me tight against him.

  I feel Caiden tremble, his face buried in my hair and I grip him closer, aching at the grief in his muffled sobs. I rub small circles on his back, wishing there was something more I could do to comfort him.

  Leaning my head against his shaking chest, I close my eyes, but all I see is the image of Lydia’s bleeding, broken body on the ground, Caiden trying and failing to fix her. This is my fault. Ethan was right; this is exactly what he said would happen.

  Lydia is dead because of me.
