Dream job as a child: To be an artist, in particular a glass blower. Why? He saw a glass blower at work once and fell in love with it.
Role models growing up: His father and Protius, the artist. Describe them. Qudim was exacting and tough, but not unfair. He was prone to quick shows of affection, but when Rune reached adulthood, he put a space between them. Rune was expected to take a certain position in preparation for the throne. Protius was avuncular and supportive. He gave Rune physical affection, supported, and guided him. He was loyal without being obsequious and taught Rune the value of having his own mind.
Greatest regret: The death of his father and his part in it.
Hobbies growing up: Exploring the caves and art.
Favorite place to be as a child: In a cave.
Earliest memory: Sitting on his father’s knee in the throne room. There was an audience and one of the vampires was kneeling in front of his father, and he looked sad and broken, but then Rune’s father put his hand on the vampire’s head and the vampire raised his head and smiled and laughed, and Rune remembers feeling happy for him.
Saddest memory: When his mother was condemned for attempting to murder Dawn and Jessa. He adored Jessa, but he was afraid his mother was going to die. He stood against his father, but it was his sister, Mal, who told him she’d hate him for the rest of her life if he hurt their mother, so Qudim agreed to exile her.
Happiest memory: Being with Jessa, his little brother. Playing with him in the park. Bringing him moon lace tarts. Jessa was innocent and happy and completely removed from the darkness and danger of being a vampire royal.
Clearest memory: The sight of his father after cutting off the head of one of his enemies, the way he smiled and stood with his sword hanging at his side with the blood dripping off it.
Skeletons in the closet: That he was not going to take the vow of obedience he owed his father. The Upheaval saved him from outright refusal, but it haunted him because he knew his father was aware of it. When his father died because of things he did, whether he was right or wrong, it cemented that memory in his head as the ultimate betrayal, and he has found it impossible to move forward from his father’s death.
If they could change one thing from their past, what would it be?: It would be that he didn’t run away. Why? Because maybe everything would have turned out differently. Maybe his father would have chosen a successor who would have honored his vows. Maybe his father would still be alive.
Major turning points or “life beats” in childhood: One was meeting Zeveriah. They connected on a spiritual level immediately. Zev was the perfect, quiet, steady friend he needed. He loved Zev’s honor and gentleness. Zev has always stood as an example to him. The birth of Jessa was another. Seeing Protius blowing glass and knowing that’s what he really wanted to do with his life.
Three adjectives to describe them as a child: Strong, reliable, affectionate.
What advice would they give to their younger self?: To be strong, because ultimately he knows he would still do exactly what he did.

Closest friends: Zeveriah and Uriah. Describe them. Zev was his best friend and lover in their youth. He is still Rune’s best friend. Rune calls him the other half of his heart. They are bonded by their experiences and their mission. Uriah was his father’s enforcer, but Uriah threw in with him against his father because he believed in the Ellowyn more than their leader. Uriah is stalwart, honest, and completely trustworthy. He would do anything for Rune and for those who matter to Rune knowing that Rune would never misuse their relationship.
Other significant friends: Otto has a similarly intense personality and an honorable core.
Enemies: His father, though not initially, and even later, he didn’t view him as a true enemy. Qudim suffered a great loss, and it was difficult for Rune to perceive the vampire he saw as his father, though he’d known for a long time that Qudim was losing his sanity. Solomon is also his enemy, but Rune views him as more of a gnat than a true enemy; nevertheless, he doesn’t take him for granted. He has many enemies throughout the Ellowyn, but they are against him ideologically rather than personally.
How are they perceived by:

Extended family: Respectful and cautious.
How would they fill out an online dating profile for themselves?: Workaholic. Looking for someone who enjoys traveling, family gatherings, art, and history. Loves good food, music, parties. Power: Carefully. He’s seen the downside of it
Ambition: Whole-heartedly. He’s not able to see that his obsession is a form of ambition
Love: Distantly, because he doesn’t think he deserves it
Change: He’s adaptable but tired. He’d prefer stability.
What is the one object or possession that they would rescue from their burning home?: Probably the tapestry in the front hall.
What (or who) bores them
?: People like Solomon bore him. People who think they are superior to others.
What makes them angry?: Injustice and cruelty.
