CHAPTER TWO
Gun
“I don’t care what you are.” A man said to a beautiful girl with brown hair and blue eyes on the screen. Suddenly everything went dark, the movie cutting off and the glow from the fixtures on the walls disappearing.
“Aunt Lil was there a power outage scheduled for tonight?” I asked, turning towards her. No reply. I sighed. Of course, there was no power outage this was all a grand joke that Claire and aunt Lil had planned. I just sat there; there was no way that I was going to play along with this immaturity. Suddenly there was a piercing shriek. I rolled my eyes and sat there. Another scream echoed through the house. Now I was a little freaked. I stood, and ran for the theater door. The sound of heavy footsteps reached me. I froze, and so did the footsteps. Dread rose in my stomach. Another scream sounded nearby. Mobile once more, I moved for the door just as something cold, hard, and metal pressed against my back. A gun. “Sit down,” A man’s voice said. I made the motion of slowly sitting back down. My thoughts were racing and my heart was pounding in my chest. I took a deep breath trying to calm it. That’s when I made my move. I jumped up and grabbed the side of his gun. I pushed it around so that it was aimed over the man’s shoulder. I twisted the man’s hand, and slammed it against the wall. The gun dropped. I swept it up, pointing it at his heart.
“No, Renady!” The lights turned back on again and Aunt Lil and Claire ran in. “It was just a joke.” Claire said.
“I know. Seriously Claire, a BB gun? You should have known I’d see through it,” I said turning towards them. I handed the gun back to the man. He walked to where Claire stood and kissed her cheek. His golden curls brushed against her skin.
“How did you know it was a BB gun?” The man said. Claire rolled her eyes.
“Because she’s Renady,”
“I guess the joke wasn’t as scary as we wanted it to be, you scared us with your self defense skills more than we scared you.” Aunt Lil said. I just shrugged. I refrained from telling them that I nearly peed my pants.
“Ren, this is my boyfriend Jordon. Jordon this is Renady.” Claire said.
“Nice to meet you” Jordon said holding out his hand. I glared at it until it dropped.
“You have a boyfriend?”
“I met him at school” She said with a shrug. Her eyes slid to Aunt Lil’s.
“Sure, sure.” I said. “You know I really can’t thank you enough, you interrupted a movie that, well, I’m pretty sure you saw part of it,” I said turning to Jordon. He laughed.
“Pleasure is all mine.” As the night continued on in laughter, and junk food, I found that the pain I felt for my grandparents was lessoning. Each day, and even each moment, I found that I was beginning to adjust to my new life, just as they would have wanted. Time began to speed up, instead of drag on, and soon it was time to sleep. I trudged up the stairs to my recently finished apartment. The walls were painted in a fresh lime green, accenting the dark hardwood floors nicely. Pops of black and white, and red and pink were found in fabrics and furniture. I walked over to my large four poster bed. I pulled out a box from under it. I opened the lid and took out a picture of my grandparents and I. I clutched it tight to me for a moment then set it on the bedside table.
