Falling for the Governess: A Historical Regency Romance Book

“A pact?” Andrew asked.
“That we shall never marry. A bit like how the Sisters at the boarding school agreed to watch over one another and deter them from sin if temptation should arise,” she explained.
“Ah, yes, the other Missionaries did a similar thing. Sometimes we would have women with us, and whether we were men of the cloth or not, the women would tempt us. So we committed to talking one another out of it were the temptation too strong,” Andrew replied.
“Then is it agreed?” Lucy asked.
“Of course. Should either of us ever become so foolish as to start considering marriage, then it is the other's duty to ensure they see reason.”
It felt a little strange to have formed such a pact. But it also made a lot of sense to Lucy. This way not only was she reassured that he would not ask her parents for her hand, but they could help the other to achieve their goal of forever dodging marriage. It was perfect.
The thought crossed her mind that perhaps she would want to marry some day, or that maybe Lord Jones was doing this only to get close to her. But it was too late to go back on the pact. And besides, it was better for her to have him by her side than against her.
