“Enter,” a surprisingly strong and dominant sounding voice called out. Surely a man who had suffered through three strokes wasn’t capable of sounding quite so hale and hearty, Carrie thought, idiotically. It was a voice rich and smooth as melted chocolate, or a decadent and enticing butterscotch, and the sound of it made her go slightly weak at the knees. She took a deep breath, opened the intricately carved oak door, and entered as confidently as she could.
Her hard-won composure was immediately assailed, as she looked up into the vivid ice-blue eyes of the most handsome and, quite clearly, the most arrogant man that she had ever encountered in her life. Stood before her was what could only be described as a Celtic God, with his glossy black hair, that curled just gently enough to soften the hard lines of his jaw, making him not merely handsome, but thoroughly irresistible. He was tall too, he towered over her, making her feel as small and diminutive as a dwarf - and she was a more than adequate 5 foot 10 inches.
She licked her lips, and swallowed nervously, her mouth suddenly parched ‘I’m Carrie Norman, Cad…’ she started politely, only to be interrupted abruptly by the imposing and overwhelming man in front of her.
“’I know who you are, and where you have been sent from, after all it was us who approached them to send capable nursing care,’ he cut in to her introduction. ‘I am not particularly happy that they have deemed to send us a mere healthcare assistant, but you will have to do for now until they can find someone more suitable.’ Carrie’s blood boiled at this dismissal of her abilities, before she had even started, but chose to keep quiet for the moment. Her first day was not the best time to be creating waves.
The problem was, that despite this man’s hideous manner, his particular combination of pale-skinned, patrician good looks, with those impossibly cold blue eyes, an imposing 6 feet 6 inches of immutably masculine and immaculately-clad body, he was most definitely having an effect on Carrie that she had never felt before. She was amazed at herself, marvelling at the unwanted sensuous prickling under her skin, and the erotic warmth spreading throughout her body - utterly astounded in fact, that she could be so physically attracted to anyone, let alone someone so obviously rude, impatient, and obnoxious.
‘My father has suffered three strokes. He needs to be assisted with personal care, with his meals and you are to provide company for him. I am sure you know what he will need, and can use your own initiative, but here is my card, with all of my contact numbers so you will be able to get hold of me at any time,’ the man said as he headed swiftly towards the door she had just entered. She looked down at it. The name embossed at the top of the thick cream card read Daniel Fortescue-Whitham. Below it, were three telephone numbers, and an email address. ‘Do not bother my mother with any issues, she will not be able to help you, and you may well find you spend more time caring for her than you do my father, if you aren’t careful. Try to ensure that you keep a professional relationship with her at all times, she can get very dependent, and it makes it harder every time another nurse leaves.’ And with that said, Daniel Fortescue-Whitham was gone.
