He’d been trying to reach Brian for days just like everyone else so he didn’t even greet him. “Where are you, we’ve been trying to call you for days,” he growled into the phone, completely disgusted with his cousin for running out on Heather.

Brian ignored his questions and asked one of his own. “Where's Heather? I’ve been trying to get a hold of her for days but my phone wasn’t working right. I need to talk to her right away.”

“Join the club, she went to town hours ago and hasn’t gotten back yet. We’ve had some problems here in Homestead and I’m really worried that she’s in trouble,” Seth said, condemnation in his voice.

“You have to go find her, she might be in trouble.”

“Do you think I don’t know that.” Seth said, his anger growing. It took all his restraint not to tell Brian about the baby but it wasn’t his news to tell. “Maybe if you told me what’s going on I might be able to help her.”

Brian quickly filled Seth in on what Josh had done. “I never thought he’d do something like this. These are bad men we’re dealing with. You have to go find her, make sure she’s okay. I’ll be in Homestead in an hour or so,” The desperation in Brian’s voice calmed Seth’s anger.

“I’m leaving right now, call Theo and the police,” Seth said, hanging up the phone.

Seth grabbed his keys and headed for the front door, then remembered that he’d parked his truck at the barn so he reversed direction and went out the back door. As he was walking to the barn, a beat up black truck turned onto the main street of town and drove slowly towards the clinic.

  *****

Heather watched as they drove past Seth and Lauren’s house, hoping that Seth knew that something had happened. She was scared for both herself and the baby but trying to not show it. When they arrived at the clinic they drove around back and parked the truck, then pulled her roughly out of the vehicle and pushed her toward the back door.

“You’d better hope that there’s no one in there, it will make things so much simpler if no one else has to get involved,” the man with the gun said, poking her in the back with it. “My friend there doesn’t want to hurt anyone but I wouldn’t mind.”

Heather took a deep breath, hoping that the clinic was empty, the last thing she wanted was someone to get hurt and she had no doubt that was what would happen if anyone tried to interfere. She punched in the code to disarm the security system, relieved to find it set, then opened the door, stepped inside and switched on the lights. She hesitated for a second, wishing there was a panic button on the alarm, but it hadn’t seemed necessary when the alarm had been installed so she led the men down the hallway to the lab.

When they walked into the lab the men looked around them, clearly overwhelmed with all the equipment. “Get us what we need and be quick about it,” the man with the gun said, shoving her across the room.

“It’s going to take me a few minutes,” Heather said, hoping that if she stalled for time Matt would notice the lights and come investigate like he had before.

Matt stood under the cover of the trees watching the clinic, for days that’s all he’d been doing and now he was glad he'd agreed to do it for Seth. No one had been sure who the men she’d seen were, but once Heather shared the discovery she and Brian had made with them, he knew what they were after and that they’d be back. A cure for most common illnesses would be worth a fortune and he was surprised that someone hadn’t come looking for it sooner. He blamed Brian for putting Heather in danger.

Everyone in Homestead had been keeping watch for strangers so when the black truck had pulled into town, he’d gotten a call and quickly left his house for the cover of the trees. As he stood waiting for the truck, he tried to call Seth but his call went straight to voice mail, he left a message hoping that Seth would get it and soon. There wasn’t much he could do on his own, had in fact been told not to be a hero and he was fine with that. But when the truck pulled up and he saw Heather in the back seat it was all he could do not to give his position away.

He watched as the men pulled Heather out of the car, getting increasingly upset by the way they were treating her, especially since he knew that she was pregnant. She hadn’t told him, but he was too good at his job not to have noticed the changes she’d been going through the last few months. At first he’d been upset that she hadn’t told him, but then he'd realized that she hadn’t told anyone including Brian so he’d held on to his knowledge. He’d tried to get her to let him go with her to town that day but she’d refused, making a lame excuse that she needed some alone time.

Now he wished he’d insisted, but when he saw the gun that one of the men was carrying he knew that he wouldn’t have been able to help her, that it might be better that he was right where he was. He watched them enter the clinic, then crept closer to the building hoping to see something though the windows in the lab. Peeking into the window, he saw Heather shuffling papers, clearly trying to stall and tried to reach Seth again, only to get his voicemail. Cursing, he went to get help, he couldn’t just let those men hurt Heather, at least not without a fight. The only problem was that they had a gun, but he had the element of surprise on his side, and he’d use that to his advantage.

Seth saw Heather’s car on the side of the road miles before he reached it, the driver side door was open and he knew that he wouldn’t find her inside even before he reached the car. He uttered a few curse words before climbing out of the truck to investigate, cringing when he saw that the car was empty. Grabbing his phone out of his pocket he said a few more curse words when he saw two missed calls from Matt whom he’d instructed to keep an eye on the clinic in case the men came back.

It didn’t take a genius to figure out what had happened, somehow the men had managed to get their hands on Heather, must have been watching and waiting for her. Hurrying back to his truck he punched in Matt’s number, mumbling under his breath when he didn’t pick up right away. Throwing the truck back into gear, he slammed his foot down on the accelerator hoping that he’d catch them before they got to town.

Matt picked up on the first ring, slightly out of breath. “They’ve got Heather and they’re inside the clinic. I managed to get a look through the window, she’s fine but they’ve got a big gun and I don’t think they’ll hesitate to use it. I’m over at the community center gathering some men to help us, but I’m not sure what to do, I don’t want Heather to get hurt.”

“I’m on my way back now, I finally got Brian on the phone and he should be there any minute. Go down to the harbor and meet him, then meet me by the old barn behind the clinic,” Seth said, roaring down the road so fast he nearly slid off into the ditch.

  *****

When Brian stepped off the plane, his brother Theo right behind him, the first thing he saw was Matt who looked ready to kill someone. The first thing he said was, “This is all your fault, you never should have left her. If something happens to her you’re going to have to deal with me.”

Brian held up his hands. “I know I screwed up but now isn’t the time to settle that score. Did you find her?” The concern on his face almost melted Matt’s anger, but not quite.

“Two men took her into the clinic at gun point,” he said, his eyes blazing.

“Shit, we have to get her out of there,” Brian said, then asked, “Where’s Seth?”

“We’re supposed to meet him at the old barn. He should be there by now,” Matt said, still hostile.

Brian ignored him and began to run towards town, leaving Matt no choice but to follow him. When they got to the barn, Seth was waiting for them along with about ten other men who had answered Matt’s call for help. Heather was one of them and the people of Homestead were fiercely protective of one another. There were many suggestions about what they should do, but each and every one would put Heather in danger and no one wanted to do that. Finally, Seth proposed a plan that might work.

“The clinic used to be the big barn, we converted it when the town was built, the ceilings were dropped several
feet and I bet we can use that to our advantage. If we can get into that space from the roof, we can take them by surprise,” he said, making a crude drawing of the clinic in the dust of the old barn.

Heather was shuffling papers around trying to stall for time, she’d seen Matt’s face briefly in the window and knew that help was on the way but it was up to her to keep the men there until it could arrive. It had been a stupid choice to go to town, but then again, she’d never imagined that she’d be attacked on the side of the road in broad daylight. She was shoving the last of the papers into a folder when she heard a thump on the roof and knew that something was going to happen soon.

Glancing over her shoulder she saw that the men had heard the thump too, grabbing up the folder she crossed the room and shoved it at one of the men, releasing it before he had a good hold on it so that the papers scattered all over the floor. The man cursed and bend down to pick it up just as the ceiling came crashing down and four men dropped to the floor, guns trained on the man standing in the corner who still had his weapon trained on her.

He rotated and waved the gun around, trying to figure out which of the men to point it at, then realized that he was outnumbered. “I wouldn’t even think about it,” Brian said, the gun tucked under his arm pointed directly at the man.

Seeing that he had no chance, the man dropped the gun which fell with a loud clatter to the floor. Seth grabbed it and shoved the man to the floor. “Stay there and don’t move.”

Matt grabbed the other man and shoved him up against the wall. “Stay right there or you won’t be walking out of here,” he said then pulled some rope out of his back pocket and began tying the men up.

Heather sank into a chair, her legs too shaky to hold her any longer, and tried to calm her breathing. She’d been so sure that her life was almost over that for a second it seemed surreal that she wasn’t dead. Brian rushed to her side and took her hand and just looked at her, clearly as shaken up as she was and unable to speak.

Finally, he reached up and wiped away the tears she hadn’t even known were streaming down her face. “Are you okay?”

She could only nod her head, unable to speak, the shock of seeing Brian beginning to outweigh the fear still coursing though her body. Brian helped her to her feet. “The police should be here any at time, I called them before I left Anchorage.” Then he guided her out to the reception area. “We’ll wait here until they get here,” he said, helping her into a chair.

In the distance they could hear the thumping of helicopter blades, and before long the clinic was swarmed with cops dressed in full riot gear. It felt like it took forever to get the men out of the clinic and on their way to jail in Anchorage, but when Heather looked at her watch she saw that only a few hours had passed since she’d been taken from her car. After the police had asked her a few questions, Brian stopped them not, liking the way Heather looked.

“She’ll be available tomorrow to answer all the questions you want, right now I’d like to get her home,” he finally said, when the police wouldn’t leave her alone. Then he took her by the hand and led her out of the clinic and down the street to her house.

When they got to her house, he led her into the kitchen and made her a cup of hot tea. When he set it down in front of her, she opened her mouth to thank him, but he held up his hand to stop her. “I’m sorry I left the way I did, it was cowardly and wrong. I thought leaving you a note was enough but it wasn’t. I should have stayed here and faced my mother, I see that now. I don’t blame you for not wanting anything to do with me after the way I acted but I hope you’ll find a way to forgive me. I don’t think I can live without you, you’re all I’ve been thinking about since I left.”

Heather was on her feet and in his arms so quickly that they about hit the floor, but he just managed to get his balance. “I didn’t get your note, it fell down between the desk and the filing cabinet in my office.”

Brian stared at her in shock. “I don’t understand, I put it right in the middle of your desk.”

“Seth thinks your mother slid it down there. She was in my office, Matt kicked her out but she was in there for a long time before he got there,” Heather said, then put her hand on his chest when she felt his muscles tense.

“I should have known that my mother would find a way to screw up my life,” Brian said, the anger in his voice so fierce Heather was afraid for a second.

“But she didn’t, you’re here and that’s all that matters,” Heather said, hoping to calm him, happy just to have Brian back. “Forget your mother for a little while, we can deal with her later.”

  *****

Brian took a deep breath, looked down at Heather and pulled her closer, surprised when he felt a hard lump pressed up against his stomach. Heather laughed at the look on his face when he realized what he was feeling, “Is that…are you…”

“Yes, about four months. I went to the doctor today, that’s why I left Homestead,” she said, grinning up at him.

Brian had never imagined it would feel this wonderful to discover that he was going to become a father, and instantly he loved the baby just as much as he loved Heather. Desire raced though his body, desire more powerful than anything he’d ever felt before so he swung her up in his arms and headed for the bedroom. He set her on her feet when they got into the room but didn’t let go of her.

“I think you need to get into bed,” he said, thinking that if she didn’t he’d end up taking her right there in the doorway.

“I’m really okay Brian. I don’t need to go to bed,” Heather protested.

“If you don’t, I’m going to take you right here,” he growled and began tugging at her clothes.

Heather sucked in a deep breath, desire flooding her body, waking every nerve. “Oh,” she said, unable to say more because Brian’s mouth had covered hers in a kiss that left her breathless.

When they’d finally managed to remove each other’s clothing, they fell onto the bed. They explored each other as if for the first time, kissing and touching until Brian pulled away from Heather and looked down at her. “I love you Heather. I never thought I would find someone to love the way I love you. From the minute I left here all I’ve been able to think about is being in your arms again.”

Heather couldn’t help the tears that sprang to her eyes. “I love you too Brian, promise me that you’ll never leave me again,” she said.

Brian wiped the tears from her eyes, then said, “I’m done with the Amazon, I’m done hiding from my mother and I’m never going to leave you again. You’re stuck with me Dr. Snyder, and you’d better get used to the idea.”

Heather had no words for what she was feeling so she reached up and pulled his head down and kissed him, all the love she felt apparent in her kiss. Brian felt the desire and pleasure rush through his body, a feeling so intense he wasn’t sure it could be real but then Heather reached between them and took his erection in her hand and he knew that it was. He sucked in a breath and growled deep in his throat then trailed kisses down her chest and sucked one of her swollen nipples into this mouth as she stroked him.

His hand trailed down over her the rise of her belly, pausing briefly to rub the swelling, then dipped between her legs which she willingly parted for him. When his finger found her clit and began to stroke the swollen nib her hips came up off the bed, little moans of pleasure escaping her lips which were still pressed to his. Whispering her name over and over, he brought her to climax, loving the way her body responded to his gentle ministrations.

As the tremors began to fade, Heather came slowly back to reality, marveling that only Brian’s touch could make her feel that good. Rising from the bed, she shifted until she was between his legs, his erection tickling her stomach, then slowly slid down his body and took him into her mouth. Brian’s moan of pleasure made her smile briefly with happiness, knowing that she was making him feel as good as he’d made her feel.

“Oh, god Heather,” he gasped, “I didn’t think I’d ever feel this good again.”<

Pleasure shot straight though her at his words and she was suddenly desperate to have him inside her so she slid back up his body and straddled him. Without hesitation, Brian slid inside her and buried himself deeply, relishing the feeling of her hot wet core as the muscles clenched around him. He grabbed her by the hips and rocked her up and down, his head thrown back in ecstasy, each thrust bringing him closer to the satisfaction only Heather could give him.

Heather spread her legs just a bit further, then sat up, her hands braced against Brian’s chest, and threw her head back as well, the tight knot of pleasure inside her growing with each thrust of his hips. When he reached between them and began rubbing her clit with his thumb, she felt the knot begging to expand, wave after wave of pleasure so intense she was panting with the need for that final wave to over come her. When it finally did she collapsed on top of him, her body still convulsing, then squealed when he lifted her off him and flipped her onto her back.

He slid between her legs, pushed them apart and drove himself into Heather, making her gasp with pleasure at the sudden and almost violent joining of their bodies. But instantly her body responded to his, the pleasure flooding her until she was only aware of Brian and the thrust of his hips. When her orgasm came this time, it was more intense than anything she’d ever felt before, every nerve in her body was on fire as the waves of pleasure robbed her of her breath.

Brian moaned in pleasure as Heather’s body caressed his, each contraction of her muscles bringing him closer to his peak. When he looked down at her, her eyes closed in pleasure, his name on her lips. He couldn’t hold back any longer, the time had come for him to feel that final joy only Heather could bring him. With one final thrust he let the pleasure take him over the edge. Buried deeply inside of her he emptied himself, calling her name until, spent, he rolled off her.
