But maybe he was wrong. This wasn’t her. It’d been years, after all. A lifetime and more.
“Who is that?” he asked Alex, keeping his voice flat and uninterested in total defiance of the way his heart was pounding.
“Hmm?” The bear followed his gaze. “Oh. Um…” He thought for a second. “Looks like that might be Luna. One of Wes’s pack. Real close-knit group, from the sound of it.”
Luna. Gods above, it was her.
His eyes darted around. Were the others here? The bastards who couldn’t hurt him now, but by the gods would still pay?
Alex glanced over his shoulder as his sister Amelia called to him. “You need anyth—”
“Go on.”
The Bloodclaw hesitated at the tight tone Knox couldn’t hide. But after a moment, he nodded. “Okay…” Still eyeing him, Alex hurried away.
Knox looked back at the blond wolf. She hadn’t glanced in his direction. Probably had no idea he was here. Shepherding the newcomers was taking all of her attention, her voice so kind and her smile so gentle.
Trembling rippled through him. She’d always been gentle.
Nothing like him, especially anymore.
Her eyes moved toward him and Knox turned away sharply, still shaking. She wouldn’t recognize him. Not after all these years. Not with so much life and damage between them. Things she didn’t know about.
Things she never would.
He drew a steadying breath, shoving down the memories and the pain and everything that had come after, just as he always did. The berserkers never should have come here. He never should have, not for a thousand reasons, and definitely not for this one.
His heart ached. This had all been a mistake.
And reuniting with Luna would be the biggest of them all.
