  “Stop.” She broke away panting.

  “What’s the matter?”

“I don’t know.” She shook her head, looking bewildered. “I’m feeling way too much.”

He slipped his hand up her top again, this time sliding his hands up her torso till he reached her breast. Her nipple was a hard little point and she gasped when he stroked his thumb across it. “You’re turned on. Tell me what you’re feeling.”

“You should know already! You’re the one who’s doing it to me.”

He grinned at her and kissed her again, unable to help himself. “I can make you feel good. Let me show you how.”

  “A different kind of lesson?”

“Yes,” he whispered, squeezing her breast. It fit perfectly in his hand and he watched her bite down on her lower lip. “Let me touch you, Shell. Let me make you feel good.”

  “Okay,” she breathed.

Her approval made his excitement spike even further. He felt nearly out of control, but he knew he had to keep his head. She was inexperienced. He was the first man to really kiss her, to touch her like this. He had to set the bar high. She wasn’t just some other woman. She was Shelly.

“Come here and kiss me.” He leaned back against the window and waited until her delicious body settled on top of his. He couldn’t suppress the groan of pleasure at feeling her chest meet his. She’d said she was feeling too much, but he could guarantee that he was feeling ten times more. Every touch was like a pleasurable painful little shock to his system.

She looked into his eyes for a long moment before she touched her lips to his. It was an unsure kiss, as if she was afraid of doing something wrong. “Kiss me again, Shell.” He touched the backs of her legs, his hands skimming up the backs of her thighs to urge her on.

“What’s happening?” she asked him, her lips so close to his.

“Nothing if you don’t want it to.” He brushed the hair out of her face. “We can stop right now.”

She took his face in her hands. “I don’t want to stop and that’s what scares me.” She ran her tongue lightly across his lips before she licked inside of his mouth. He wasn’t expecting that from her. He wasn’t expecting the way his body reacted so sharply to it. There was so much hunger there, and before he knew what was happening the heat between them had exploded. His cock was begging to be freed from his pants, begging to be inside her, but he knew he couldn’t do that. It would be going too far. This was supposed to be about her, about making tonight good for her.

He pushed up her skirt, cupping her incredible behind in his hands. Her ass had been driving him to distraction all day. Hell, all week. Especially the way it moved in her sweet little skirt. And it drove him crazy that Ace had noticed, too, in the diner that day.

He wasn’t supposed to notice how beautiful she was. Or talk to her like they were friends. Or have anything whatsoever in common with her.

She was Levi’s. He knew that he was being completely ridiculous but she was his.

He didn’t want anybody else to have her like this, and he knew if she married another man it would kill him. She wouldn’t be just his anymore.

He pulled down her underwear and she broke the kiss.

“Trust me,” he urged her as he slid them down her legs. “I won’t hurt you. I’ll never hurt you.”

He rolled them so she was half lying on the seat. She was the sexiest thing he had ever seen in that moment. Her eyes full of arousal, her underwear around her ankles, her pouty lips slightly open.

He touched the inside of her thigh, causing her to release a gasp as her legs opened. He knew no one had ever touched her there. No one had ever touched her like he was about to touch her and that filled him with pride. It gave him a bigger rush than winning a race ever could. He kissed her the same moment his fingers stroked her lower lips.

She was very wet and hot and needing to be satisfied. He opened her and with one finger stroked down her length, causing her to pant and squirm beneath his hand.

He didn’t think it was possible for him to be harder in that moment.

  “Levi,” she moaned.

He knew he couldn’t prolong this. He knew he had to make her come as quickly as possible because he wasn’t going to be able to hold it together much longer. He slid his fingers up and concentrated on the spot he knew would get her there the fastest.

She dug her nails into his shoulders, her eyes shut, and let out little breathy moans that nearly drove him to the brink of his sanity.

And then it happened and her entire body clenched. She cried out with pleasure and he was torn between watching her climax and taking her mouth to be closer to her while she experienced it.

He kissed her, kissed her till the trembles subsided and she went limp on the seat.

“Oh, Levi,” she said after a few moments. “I think I like making out in the back of cars.”

  Chapter 10

  Shells,

Personally, I like the show where they throw chairs at each other. Rip hair out and sleep with their siblings’ significant others. I view it as educational television. An in-depth look into family dynamics.

Who the hell am I kidding? I just like to see the people getting punched sometimes.

Makes my family seem damn normal.

Shelly pulled up in front of the bakery the next morning, feeling exhausted from her late night out. But it wasn’t just staying out late that made her sleepy and wanting to stay cuddled in bed. She couldn’t sleep last night. Her mind wouldn’t shut off; memories of those heated moments she’d shared with her best friend kept flashing through.

She had never felt like that before.

She had never felt that good or alive. Or confused.

What the hell had happened between them?

Well, she knew what happened and it felt damn amazing. But friends weren’t supposed to do that. She didn’t know a lot of things about the world, but she knew friends don’t let other friends stick their hands up your skirt.

Because it would only lead to trouble. It would make her want him more.

She knew he just wanted to give her new experiences and make her feel safe. She knew that he knew she wouldn’t just trust anyone with her body. He was teaching her things about herself and sex that most people learned in their teens, but she’d missed out on.

  But … But …

Things would change between them. They could never go back to the way they were before. He’d seen a side of her that no one else had seen and right now she didn’t think it was possible for her to be that intimate with another man in the same way.

She tried to shake off the thoughts of him and focus on something else. She was meeting Judy Reyes, another fifth-grade teacher today, to talk about their plans for the summer reading party being held at the library in a couple of days. She really liked Judy, who was also another single girl in their small town. But unlike Shelly, Judy was outgoing and sassy. They balanced each other out as a teaching team.

She hoped spending some time with her friend would help take her mind off what was going on with Levi. He had called early that morning and told her that he was going to the farmers market with Colt and Zanna that day, and to ask her if she wanted to come. She was tempted, because the more she was with him, the more she wanted to be with him, but she had plans. And she needed space from him.

Just to clear her head and maybe slow down all the feelings that were rushing her whenever she was near him.

She’d often thought about what it would be like if Levi came back to town, but never had those thoughts included her with her undies around her ankles and his hand between her legs.

She spotted Judy’s red sports car and waved at her. Judy frowned deeply as she got out the car.

“What is it?” she asked Judy when she walked up.

“What happened to you?” She touched Shelly’s hair, which was up in messy bun with a few pieces hanging around her face. Her body had felt too boneless this morning for her to do much else with it.

>   “Nothing.”

“You look freaking adorable. You have a waist. And hips! And that dress is so cute. Shelly! Where has this girl been hiding?”

“Hiding?” She shook her head. “That’s what Levi said.”

  “Levi. As in Levi King?”

  “Yeah. He’s back in town.”

“They’re all back in town. It’s the only thing anybody is talking about. Heard he rented out Comet’s so he could be alone there with some girl.”

“Um …” She bit her lip. “I was that girl. He did it because I was uncomfortable with anyone seeing me there drinking.”

“Why? I’ve been there before. No one has stoned me. As long as you don’t get shitfaced it’s totally fine for you to drink in public when you teach elementary school in the town that you live in. Did you get shitfaced?” Judy grinned. “You bad little teacher, you.”

“I didn’t! I swear. I just had one drink and a sip of a few others. Whiskey is horrible, by the way, and so is beer. And red wine.”

Judy laughed, that earthy laugh that made her extra attractive. Judy was a little older than Shelly and beautiful. She was half Mexican and half Filipina, which made her the most exotic person in their little town before Zanna moved in. “Oh, sweetie. It took me a long time before I liked red wine. If you put a bunch of fruit in it and something sweet it tastes amazing. Sangria is a beautiful thing. We’ll make some today.”

  “It’s not even noon.”

  “Fine. We’ll have Bellinis instead.”

  “What’s a Bellini?”

  “Peach nectar and sparkling wine.”

  “Hmm. I might like that.”

Judy winked at her. “Hang with me, honey. I’ll have you liking all sorts of stuff.”

They entered the bakery, which sold an amazing frozen hot chocolate, and studied the goodies in the long glass case: every kind of baked good imaginable, from croissants to beautifully decorated cakes.

“I need to make a chocolate cake for Levi,” she said when she came to the end of the line.

“You’re making a cake for him? You look hot. He rented out a bar for you.” She raised one of her dark eyebrows. “What’s going on?”

“He’s my best friend,” she said quickly. “You know that. Oh, look at that. A Nutella sticky bun. I think I might cry. That looks amazing. Have you ever had one? We’ll take two and two large coffees with milk and sugar. You take your coffee like that, right, Judy?”

“Oh no you don’t.” Judy grabbed her shoulder.

“You don’t want a Nutella sticky bun?” Shelly asked innocently.

“Of course I do and put extra sugar in my coffee,” she told the clerk before she turned back to Shelly. “I can tell by the look on your face that there’s something going on.”

“Let’s sit down.” She paid for the food and sat down at a table in the corner. Shelly wanted to keep things private, but she needed to talk to someone about what was going on in her head. Levi was normally that person, but she couldn’t talk to him about himself. “I don’t know what’s going on,” she whispered. “He kisses me. He does things to me in the back of cars that make me forget who I am.”

“What is it with those King men and the back of cars? Grace said the same thing about Duke yesterday. They’ve been back in town less than a week!”

“Grace? As in our school nurse Grace?”

“Forget I said anything,” she said quickly.

Grace Truman was the indirect reason the King brothers had left Destiny. Shelly didn’t really know who she was at the time, but she had always imagined the woman Duke King went to prison for to be glamorous and stuck up. When Grace moved back to town with her son and took a job at her school, though, Shelly was pleasantly surprised. Grace was down to earth and pretty in an unassuming way. She was just a kind person.

But it made sense. Because she couldn’t see Duke falling for someone who wasn’t.

“Oh, my goodness!” Shelly gasped, realization coming over her. “Is Grace’s son Duke’s?”

“I-I-I …” Judy shook her head, looking completely flabbergasted. “I can’t say. You would have to ask Grace that.”

“Duke doesn’t know, does he? Or he didn’t know. Levi would have told me. Duke would never leave his kid. He’s going to kill Grace.” Now it made sense. Levi said that Duke had moved out. That he had mentioned learning the truth about something.

Levi was about to become an uncle.

She was going to have to keep this from him.

She hated to, but it wasn’t her story to tell.

“I’m sure he won’t and it’s none of our business,” Judy said, sounding completely flustered. “So shut up about it before he kills us.”

  “This is nuts.”

“Drop it. In fact, tell me more about you and Mr. Sexy in the back in the car. I think I need a King brother, too. I wonder what Colt’s up to?”

“Don’t bother. I’m pretty sure Colt has it bad for Zanna.”

“Damn. I could have used some more heat in my summer.”

Shelly nodded. Having a little extra heat in her summer made things a lot more interesting.

“This place is packed,” Colt said as he pulled into the parking lot of the farmers market. “And not just with locals, either.”

“I told you all about it,” Zanna said, looking at Colt. “You didn’t want to believe me.”

Levi barely believed it himself. He’d never thought Destiny was the type of town to have a farmers market. But the place was filled with tourists who were pumping life into the economy. It was so different from the town that was nearly dead when he left.

“I needed to see it for myself,” Colt said, looking back at Zanna. “I didn’t become successful by trusting anybody’s word.”

“Do you trust anyone, Colt?” she asked, giving Colt a long look that said much more than words could.

“Nope,” Levi chimed in from the backseat. “Not anyone. Even I had to go through three rounds of job interviews before he hired me, and I’m his favorite person.”

“Why do you keep saying you’re my favorite person?” Colt looked back at him. “What makes you think I like you more than anybody else?”

He liked messing with Colt, but he knew Colt would do anything for him, including taking a beating from their drunken father that was meant for Levi. It was hard for him to be angry at Colt for keeping whatever it was they were keeping from him. He was still annoyed as hell, but not angry. Shelly put things into perspective for him.

He wouldn’t have made through life without his brothers.

“You don’t like anybody,” he said to Colt. “You like me. C’mon, dude, everybody does. Right, Zanna?”

“You’re hot.” She grinned at him. “People like hot people.”

“See? Come on.” He opened his door. “I hope somebody here makes good Mexican food. I’ve been jonesing for some good Mexican food.”

As soon as he got out of the SUV he heard the murmurs, his name being whispered. He had been recognized. It felt weird to be recognized here. He was aware of his fame in Vegas and everywhere else around the world he traveled, but it was hard to wrap his head around people being so impressed by him in the town where they used to whisper trash under their breath.

Two kids slowly walked over to him with their phones out.

“Mr. King. We love your show. Can we get a selfie with you?”

“Of course.” He smiled at the boys and took the picture himself because he had the longest arms.

At least they had asked. It was better than the random people snapping pictures of him when he was out. He knew the pictures of him with Shelly in the mall had wound up on the Internet. His manager, Fitz, had sent him the link in a text. He didn’t mention it to Shelly, though. The caption said that he was with an old friend. There was no speculation that they might be lovers. He wondered why that was. Shelly didn’t look like most of the women he went out with, but he found her body more pleasing. And they were lovers of sort
s. He had a damn hard time getting her out of his mind after last night.

“We miss watching you race,” the younger-looking redhead said to him, causing him to pull his mind off the girl who had taken up residence there. “Are you going to go back?”

“I don’t know. You’ll have to keep track of me. There might be some cool stuff happening soon.”

He was surprised that Fitz hadn’t inquired about the deal he wanted Levi to take. Maybe he was respecting his time here with Lolly, or maybe he had another plan.

“How did you get into racing?” the older of the two boys asked.

“Karting. On a track in a safe place.”

  “Around here?”

“No.” He shook his head. He’d never thought he would race when he was here. “In California.”

“I wish there was someplace like around here,” the boy said. “There’s nothing for us to do.”

“I know.” He agreed, but he’d had Shelly then and life had never seemed that boring. “I grew up here, too.”

“I’m getting out of here as soon as I get old enough.”

“Yeah, me too,” his friend agreed.

  “This place isn’t so bad.”

“You left here. There’s nothing for us to do now and there’s not going to be anything left for us if the rumors are true.”

  “What do you mean, rumors?”

“Come on. Everyone who works at the factory knows. My dad said the management thinks they’re dumb but they’re not. He says that we’ll have to move out of state if the factory shuts down. Maybe we’ll go to California. At least they have karting tracks there.”

“Yeah,” he said, not feeling good about the conversation.

  “Thanks for the picture.”

“No problem. Before you go, do you know if anyone here sells Mexican food?”

“Yeah.” The boy motioned behind him. “There’s a truck that sells really good carne tostadas.”
