“Why would they cut the wires?” She waved toward the land on the other side of the fence. It was forested and couldn’t be driven through.

“Horses. Expensive ones.” Nate looked at her. “Some of Jackson’s horses are worth millions, baby.”

Nymph nodded. “Or, it could be hunters.”

“Any hunter stupid enough to try to hunt on this land would spend most of the day in jail.” Nate looked toward the trees. “Wave to the cameras, pet.”

“What?” Nymph glanced toward the trees.

“Cade has this entire ranch wired. He’s probably watching us right now.”

Nymph planted her hands on her hips. “But everyone knows boots on the ground is better. Nothing like a real person to spot the little things.”

“That’s right.” Nate hooked his arm around her waist, bent her back, and brushed his lips over hers. “You taste sweet, like maple syrup.” He kissed her again, this time exploring her mouth with his tongue as he dipped her lower. Nymph grabbed his shoulders and held on. He slid his mouth to her ear, where he bit the lobe before releasing her.

She drew in a deep breath. “What was that for?”

Nate shrugged. “I just needed to taste you again.”

Nymph laughed and they continued the circuit around the ranch until they reached the highway. Nate drove along the shoulder while Nymph watched for any breaches. When they reached the turn off to Harry’s Truck Stop he pulled in and parked.

“Time for pie.” Nate went around and opened Nymph’s door. He placed his hand on her lower back and escorted her into the restaurant. Harry waved at them from the counter where he was working the cash register. Nymph waved back before she chose the booth in the back corner. She slid in and Nate slid in next to her. While they waited for the waitress, they eyed the other customers. Mostly truckers, a few people from Rendezvous having a late breakfast, and tourists on their way to somewhere else.

Outside, a large, black truck pulled up and parked next to Nate’s truck.

“We’ve got company,” Nate said. “Cade and Jackson.”

A minute later he watched as they entered the restaurant, looked around, spotted them, and headed toward them. Jackson arrived first with Cade behind him.

“Boys,” Nate said. “What can we do for you?”

“Mind if we join you?” Jackson asked.

Cade slid into the booth before Nate could answer. Jackson slid in next to him. A waitress stepped up to the table, order pad in hand. Before she could speak, Nate said, “Four coffees, two slices of lemon meringue pie, one slice of cherry pie, and one slice of apple pie. The last two heated, please.”

Before she could leave, Cade stopped her. “Two Texas breakfasts with pancakes. Eggs over medium, hash browns, bacon, and toast.”

The waitress wrote down the order and hurried away.

Nate let the tension increase while they waited for her to return. Several minutes went by before she returned with a tray and set their order on the table.

Nymph stirred cream and sugar into her coffee while Nate watched his sons. Cade looked as if he’d rather be anywhere than there. Jackson was his usual enigmatic self.

Nate sampled the pie and gave a grunt of approval. “What can we do for you?”

“We saw you driving around the ranch. Find anything?” Cade smothered the pancakes on his plate with syrup then handed the bottle to Jackson before he dug into his breakfast like a starving man.

“A few places where the fence had been cut. All old, nothing new.” Nate sipped his coffee. They weren’t here to talk about the fence, but he’d let them play this out their way.

Jackson cleaned half his plate before he put his fork down. “Ravyn bumped into Jenna while she was holding a hot pan. The hot water splashed on Jenna’s hand.”

“Oh, my god, is she okay?” Nymph asked.

Jackson nodded. “She has a minor burn and Doc said she’ll be okay. Ravyn cried all night. Zane’s with her.”

Cade sighed. “Cassie tried to finish cooking dinner while Addison swept the hallway and stairs.”

“Oh, no, Addison didn’t fall, did she?” Nymph asked.

Cade shook his head. “No, but it wore her out and she fell asleep at the dinner table. The house is too big for her to clean by herself while she’s pregnant.”

“We ended up ordering pizza and I picked it up after Jenna and I left the hospital.” Jackson ate his last bite of pie then sat back. “We need you to come back and cook.” He looked at Nymph. “If you’ll take charge of the house, the ladies can help you. They tried to clean the entire house in one day.”

“Oh,” Nymph said. “I had a schedule I used so it all got done on a rotating basis.”

Jackson nodded. “That’s what I figured.” He hesitated. “So, what about it? You coming back or not?”

“We’ll be there in time to fix lunch,” Nate said. “I’m going to finish driving around the ranch and I want to check out the view from the cemetery. The McCabes have gone back to Dallas. They took Orin, Doolin, Hugh, and Miles with them. They won’t be back for four days.”

“We can handle it.” Cade threw a twenty on the table. He stood up and Jackson followed him. “We’ll see you at the ranch later.”

The two of them walked out. Nate watched them then laughed. “Damn, those girls are faster than I thought they would be.”

“If it turns out Ravyn and Jenna deliberately did this, and Zane and Jackson find out, neither one of them will sit comfortably for a week,” Nymph said.

Nate threw another twenty on the table. “We’ve got a lot to do before we pack up and head back to the ranch.”

  * * * *

Nate threw himself onto the bed in the room they’d been given at the ranch before he folded his arms behind his head and sighed. Nymph sat up, looked at him, and knew it was time for a long talk. She straddled his hips then leaned down until she blocked his view of the ceiling.

“I don’t think you’re going to find the answer to your problem up there.”

Nate gripped her waist and pulled her forward until her bare crotch slid over his dick.

“Uh-uh, we’re going to talk first,” she said.

“First we fuck, then we’ll talk.” Nate slid her forward a couple inches and his cock slipped between the lips of her vagina.

Nymph braced herself by placing her hands on his chest. “I’ll fall asleep afterward and you know it.”

He grinned. “That’s because I’m that good, baby.”

“I can’t deny that.” She stroked her hands over his chest. His skin was always so warm and hard, but smooth with just the right amount of chest hair. She tweaked a few of them and he covered her hands. “Come on, big guy. Tell me what’s on your mind.”

Nate sighed again. “They hate me.”

Nymph thought back to dinner. It had been a little uncomfortable with Cade calling Nate Dad as if it was a curse and Luc and Logan making comments about his age and the need to watch his diet. Then Zane had started in with the legalities of Nate’s right to be on the ranch. Apparently he’d spent the last twenty-four hours reading Angus Ramsey’s will. Nate handled all that with ease, giving back as good as he got, but when the royals had agreed with their men he’d shut down.

The sound of hurt in his voice bothered her. His sons were his weakness. No matter what she said to him he always insisted he’d been a bad father and had failed his sons. She surrounded his face with her hands and forced him to meet her eyes. “You’re a good father, Nate. Perfect? No, of course not, but you did what you thought was right and your sons are alive because of it. They think they hate you but they’re too smart to not realize the sacrifice you made. You let them go so they’d be safe.” She leaned down until she rested on his chest. “You know the royals have a plan to help you?”

“Couldn’t tell that from what they said at dinner.”

“That’s the plan. Jenna, Cassie, and Ravyn are going to agree with their guys. They’re also going to help them see how you’ve pr
otected them. Addison has the easy part. She’s going to be her usual meddling self. If she did anything else Cade would get suspicious. The boys will come around eventually.”

  Nate snorted. “Boys? They’re men.”

“No, they’re just chips off the old block. You’re the original.”

Nate smiled. “They still hate me.”

“Well, yes, but they’ll get over it.”

“Is that all you have to say?”

“No. I know what will make you feel better. A good, long fucking followed by hot cocoa with marshmallows.”

In one move Nate had her flipped onto her back and her legs spread. He pressed his cock against the seam of her vagina. “Guide me into you.”

She looked into his eyes as she reached down, grasped his cock, and slid it back and forth in the moisture between her legs. His eyes darkened when she wiggled until the head pressed into her opening. He thrust into her, drawing a moan of pleasure from her before he began a deep, rhythmic thrusting.

“Nate, that feels so good.” She wiggled to hurry him up.

He pulled out, flipped her onto her belly, and pulled her onto her knees before he swatted her ass and thrust back into her. “Be still.”

Nymph gripped the bars of the headboard as Nate set up a pounding rhythm. She wanted to push back against him but knew if she did he’d stop. His strokes were hard and deep just the way she liked them. An orgasm built and she fought to hold it off until he gave her permission to come. His hand slid to her belly and pulled her back against him. It wouldn’t be long before he growled those three words she loved to hear—”come now, pet.”

He slowed his thrusts and adjusted his angle until the head of his cock scraped over her G-spot. A soft scream of pleasure left her lips as he stroked over it again and again. Just as he began to increase his thrusts, someone pounded on their bedroom door.

“Fuck.” Nate stopped. He grasped her waist and pulled her back against him as he thrust into her again.

“Nate?” she asked as more pounding came on the door.

“Damn it.” He pulled out of her, jerked on a pair of pajama bottoms and stalked to the door while she covered herself with the sheet. He jerked the door open. “Logan?”

“Cade wants to see you,” Logan said.

  “It’s two in the morning.”

“He said now, but hey, if you’re too tired I’m sure he’ll understand. After all, you’re old and need your rest.”

Nymph almost laughed out loud when Nate sent her a can-you-believe-this-shit look before he turned back to Logan.

“Fine, let’s go. Nymph, I’ll be right back.”

She smiled. “I’ll be here. Don’t forget to put lots of marshmallows in the hot cocoa.”

Three hours later Nate slid into bed beside Nymph, pulled her into his arms, and sighed.

She snuggled up to him. “How’d it go?”

“They had me tell them again where I’ve been for the last twenty-one years. I answered a lot of questions but I think they have a clearer idea of what we’ve been doing to protect them.”

“That’s good.” Nymph patted his chest.”

  “Things are looking up.”

  Chapter Eleven

Two nights later, Nymph turned off the bathroom light, walked naked across the room, and jumped onto the bed. As she arranged the sheet, she glance at Nate and laughed. He sat, fully dressed, in a chair by the fireplace, arms crossed over his chest, with a pair of reading glasses propped on his nose. A book lay open on his lap and a half empty bottle of beer sat on the table next to him. Her laughter drew a dark-browed frown her way.

“What are you so happy about?”

She smiled and patted the bed next to her. “Come on. If we hurry we might actually get to come this time.” She held back her laughter.

Nate growled. “Blue balls is no laughing matter, pet. You’re going to earn yourself a punishment if you don’t stop teasing me about it.”

Nymph grinned. “When would they give you the time to spank me? Besides, maybe they’re wearing down. They’ve got to be tired.”

Nate shook his head. “We haven’t had a moment alone in three days. There’s five of them. That makes it five to one. Not good odds.”

“One? What about me?” Nymph slid from the bed and moved to stand in front of him. She picked up the book and a grimace flashed across her face when she saw a rotting zombie on the cover. She marked the page before she laid it on the table. Nate pulled her onto his lap and she wrapped her arms around his neck and placed her ear against his chest. She listened to his heartbeat for a moment while she brushed her fingers over the back of his neck. “I’m on your side.”

Nate kissed her forehead. “We’re a team. That makes us one against them, and they’re winning. The past three nights they’ve been working in twos while the others sleep.” He removed his glasses and dropped them on the table. “I hate to admit it, but they’re younger and can take these late nights better than I can.”

Nymph snorted and walked her fingers over the ridged muscles hidden beneath his shirt. “Baby, you’re so hot just looking at you makes me horny.”

Nate pinched her bare bottom, and she squealed. He chuckled. “Horny, huh? We could sneak away to the club and find a private room for a few hours.”

  “Tomorrow night?”

“No. We’ll go Friday night, if you can wait that long.” He tipped her back, kissed her, and grinned. “Nineteen hundred. Wear black. We’ll sneak away and be locked in a private room before they know it.”

She slid her hand over his lips. “Are you sure they don’t have our room bugged? They always seem to be one step ahead of us.”

His chest rumbled with a growl. “They wouldn’t dare.”

  “You’ve met them, right?”

Nate was silent for a moment. “We’ll search it again tomorrow.”

Before Nymph could agree someone banged on the door so hard it rattled in the frame, startling her. “That’s it! I’m answering the door in the buff. Maybe that will teach them to not come knocking so late.” She received an evil grin in response.

Nate slid her off his lap, kissed her, and turned her toward the bed with a swat on her bottom. “Go to sleep. We’ll talk tomorrow.” Once she was in bed and covered up, he opened the door. “Zane. What can I do for you?”

“Cade and I have some questions about the family,” Zane said.

  “Can’t it wait until tomorrow?”

  “No.”

  “Okay, let’s go.”

Hours later, the sun was coming up when he returned to the bedroom. Nymph rolled over when he sat on the edge of the bed. “What time is it?”

“Six-thirty.” He stood up, stripped, dropped his clothes to the floor, and slid in next to her.

“Isn’t it time to start cooking breakfast?”

“I think it’s time they sampled your cooking.”

Nymph laughed. “Is this part of your new plan?”

Her only answer was a soft snore. She kissed his cheek then hurried toward the shower. She had a meal to prepare.

An hour later she watched as Logan grabbed the spoon she’d stuck in the bowl of oatmeal and lifted a huge glob of goo.

“What the hell is this?” Logan asked.

“Oatmeal,” Nymph said. “Where’s Cade and Zane?”

“Sleeping in,” Ravyn said, and Addison nodded.

“Oatmeal?” Logan dropped the spoon back into the bowl. “What’s wrong with it?”

Nymph scooped up a spoonful and tried to put it in the smaller bowl in front of her. It stuck to the spoon and she had to use her butter knife to scrape it off. The glob dropped into the bowl with a dull thud. She smiled at Logan. “There’s nothing wrong with it. This is how it always looks.”

“Did Nate cook this?” Logan took a small bite.

“No, he was so tired I let him sleep in, too. I cooked breakfast.”

Logan spit the oatmeal into his napkin. Luc covered Cassie’s bowl with his hand. “Don’t eat
that, Cassie.”

Nymph snorted. “It’s not that bad.”

“I’ve eaten bugs that tasted better than your cooking,” Luc said.

  “Luc, that’s mean,” Cassie said.

“But true. Even Nymph will tell you she can’t cook,” Luc said.

“Well, that’s true.” Nymph shrugged as if it was no big deal. She took a bite of oatmeal and swallowed it.

“But I’ve seen you bake stuff,” Addison said.

“I can bake. I just can’t cook. I would have made cinnamon rolls but I didn’t have time this morning. I made oatmeal and pancakes instead.”

Ravyn sat up eagerly. “Pancakes? Where are they?”

Nymph lifted a silver dome. “They’re a little burnt on the edges, but I think the centers are okay.”

Jackson stabbed one with a fork. He cut away the burnt part and ended up with a pancake the size of a quarter. He placed it on Jenna’s plate and grabbed five more before he passed the platter to Ravyn.

Nymph looked at the mess in her bowl and forced herself to take another bite. Addison leaned forward and patted her shoulder.

“It’ll be okay, Nymph. Don’t cry.”

Nymph looked up, surprised. “I’m not crying.”

Addison sent her an exaggerated wink and patted her again. “You don’t have to hide your feelings from us. We’re family.”

Nymph caught on, bent her head, and wiped away an imaginary tear. “I’m sorry. I could make something else.” She looked around, her eyes wide. “Toast, maybe?”

Jackson hugged Jenna. “I’ll scramble eggs. Luc and Logan, you’re in charge of the toast and there’s some fruit in the fridge.” He scooted his chair back and led the way toward the kitchen.

Luc took a sip of coffee as he stood up. He made a face and put the cup down. “I’ll make a fresh pot of coffee as well.”

“What should we do?” Jenna asked.

“Stay here and relax,” Logan said

Addison patted Nymph again. “There, there, Nymph, see you didn’t have to be concerned.” She leaned closer and hugged Nymph. “Don’t forget the house is bugged.”

Nymph hugged her back. “I just never have caught on to cooking. I don’t know why.”
