Chapter One
“Charles, can you bring the car around and take Miss Green home?”
Standing near his desk Alex hung up the house phone and turned back to the very attractive woman sitting in a chair near him. She looked infuriated as she stood and faced him.
She was a truly beautiful woman, but at this moment Pamela’s face was distorted and ugly. Red suffused her cheeks, and her blue eyes seemed mean as she glowered at him with such undisguised hostility. Her lips were a thin line of anger, and her nostrils flared as she glared and then spoke.
“You know what, Alex? It’s over.”
With those words she turned away from him and flounced toward the door. Puzzled, Alex leant against the edge of the desk as he watched her.
“I don’t understand. I thought you enjoyed our playtime.”
She turned back to look at the man she’d been involved with for the past six months and shook her head.
“This isn’t about playtime. This is about us. You hold every woman at arm’s length. You don’t get emotionally involved. You know nothing about any woman you chose to sleep with. To you I’m just a sub. I don’t even think you see me as a person.”
“That’s not entirely true.”
It was as if a dam’s wall had burst, and she had no desire to contain it. Pamela took a breath and then continued her tirade.
“Hell, you wouldn’t even know what my favourite colour is or my favourite flower, and we’ve been together for over six months!” She took a step then turned back to him. “Oh, and it isn’t bloody roses!”
She actually stamped her foot in disgust. Alex wondered what she was thinking. Judging by the resentful look on her face, it wasn’t good. She stormed at him again.
“You’ve locked your heart away.” Her shrill voice echoed in the room as she screeched at him. “Alex, you don’t feel anything!”
Her continued outburst had shocked him into silence. He just stared at her in surprise, wondering where all this was coming from.
“You really don’t get it, do you?”
“I’m sorry you’re unhappy if that’s what you mean.”
Pamela rolled her eyes as if exasperated with him. Cocking her head she went on in a more normal voice.
“I’m curious, Alex. Have you ever been tempted to collar one of your subs or even considered it?”<
br />
“Not that I understand why you want to know, but no, I haven’t and I don’t intend to.”
Infuriated she shook her head. “Of course not. Collaring a sub would mean you had to show some emotion, an attachment, some sort of affection for her. You might even have to get involved with her on a social level. Gee, there’d even be a chance you’d have to drive her home once in a while rather than getting your chauffeur to always do it.”
She turned and continued her walk to the door. Alex watched her, knowing his face was devoid of the regret he was feeling. She turned back to him, partly out the door, one hand on the doorjamb.
Here it comes, her final salvo.
“You’re a frozen bastard, Alex Harrison. You may be the best Dom I’ve ever had, but that doesn’t make up for the fact you are a coldhearted emotionless prick!”
With that she completed her exit by slamming the door shut. Alex winced and stared at the closed door. He felt as cold as she said, his face a mask.
Was he upset at her words? He wondered as he breathed in heavily, pushed off the desk, and then walked out of the room. Going down the wide hallway, he entered his bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed.
Her words had honestly surprised him. He really believed she enjoyed their time together. He had no inkling she was unhappy with him. What more did she want?
Puzzled, he thought back over the time he’d spent with Pamela. He had always ensured she’d had at least three orgasms, and he had given her plenty of aftercare, had insisted she had an enjoyable meal. He just didn’t understand it all. She had known right from the start that this was a sexual arrangement and nothing else. So why on earth was she complaining because he didn’t socialise with her?
Still confused, he stripped off the dark trousers he’d pulled on when they’d finished playing. He walked naked into the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror. Looking down, he touched his chest. While staring at it, he ran his fingers up and down, trying to feel any coldness, any hint of being frozen. Nothing—just his heart beating steadily under his fingers.
He turned this way and that, looking back into the mirror. He looked critically at himself, trying to see himself as others saw him. His face held no trace of the puzzlement he was feeling. He had perfected the mask he wore always so he showed nothing but the full control his emotions. His light green eyes stared back at him as he tried to imagine he was seeing a stranger.
At fifty-one he thought he could easily pass as forty-five. Tall, more than six feet seven inches, and very muscular, Alex was proud of his flat stomach—and his six-pack. All the exercising he got while working ensured he was at peak fitness. On top of that he liked jogging along the beach and running or cycling along the bush tracks around his home. He also surfed regularly. Yes, he was starting to gray a little at the temples, but he felt it gave him a distinguished look.
Every woman he’d ever been with had told him he was handsome, so he guessed he must be, although he couldn’t see it at all. He knew in BDSM circles, he had the nickname of Alexander the Great. A couple of subs had dubbed him that many years ago. He’d asked his friend Dan what they’d meant by it when Dan had collared his now wife. Dan told him most subs considered him a fair and honest Dom, trustworthy, and a man who would always look after anyone in his care.
But now Pamela’s words hung heavy in the air.
Was he really coldhearted emotionless prick?
He shrugged. Alex knew he never got emotionally involved with any woman so maybe he was.
* * * *
The next morning in his office he was still wondering about that question when Dan Taylor walked in. His right-hand man, Dan was his co-executive producer and his best friend. Also a very tall man, he wore his years well. His light brown eyes, crinkled with laughter lines at the corners, were smiling at Alex.
When Alex had first started making nature documentaries at eighteen, his mate Dan had helped him on weekends. Dan had studied economics and business at university while Alex was learning his craft. Gradually Alex’s work became noticed as he became more proficient, and Dan started working with him. Now his company was sought after in the industry. The documentaries he created commanded high prices, and there were plenty of people willing to spend plenty of money on them. About fifteen years back he’d built a large studio complex so he would have full control over his work from start to finish.
The studio had more requests for work than they had time. As well, many smaller companies rented out his studio stages for their own work. This generated excellent income and had allowed Alex’s company to expand even more.
Now Alex spent half his year making documentaries and the other half planning, editing, and organising his next one. He also had staff who catered to those documentaries, short films, and indie films that didn’t need his personal touch.
Fortunately Alex came from an exceedingly wealthy family. Both his parents had “old” money. When his father had divorced his mother, Alex was fifteen, and his father had immediately transferred a vast amount of money over to Alex to be held in trust until he turned twenty-one. His father didn’t want his mother to have any benefit from his wealth. When she found out what he’d done, in retaliation she had done the same. Now the pair of them hated the sight of each other and would not be in the same state, let alone the same room, as each other. In fact his mother now lived overseas rather than risk a chance of meeting his father.
But their hatred meant that Alex was able to begin his own production company—Nat Doc Productions—very early. Over the years he had added to that initial wealth. He hadn’t reached billionaire status but certainly multimillionaire status, with a portfolio close to ninety million dollars.
Now he employed seventy-five people—technicians, writers, camera, and sound people, as well as administration and accounting staff.
When Dan came on board early in the piece, Alex made him co-executive producer. Dan’s business sense was invaluable in those early years. Now the two of them were sitting on top of the nature documentary world, and they loved it.
A Dom like Alex, Dan had collared his wife Stacy eighteen years ago after they’d been together for a year. Then a year later he’d proposed and Stacy had accepted.
Stacy was what Alex called beautiful. Curly blonde hair swept past her shoulders. Her buxom figure had been what had attracted him in the first place, and then he’d discovered she was witty, smart, and full of life. They’d had a very short fling before she met Dan. He and Stacy had only just started seeing each other when she saw Dan. From that moment on, she’d only had eyes for Dan. They seemed to be blissfully happy, and if Alex was envious, he made sure he never showed it to either of them.
He realised Dan had been talking to him.
“You haven’t heard a word I said have you, Alex?”
“Sorry, Dan. No. Please tell me again.”
“What gives?”
Alex didn’t answer for a minute or so but Dan remained silent. He pulled up a chair, lay back in the seat with his feet propped on the edge of the desk, and waited. Alex had leant back in his chair and now staring up at the ceiling. He let the chair drop him back to face Dan.
“Am I a coldhearted emotionless prick? A frozen bastard?”
Dan roared with laughter then catching sight of Alex’s face he must have realised Alex was serious because he stopped suddenly. Alex leaned back again and studied the ceiling.
“What brought this on, Alex?”
“Pamela left me last night.”
“Oh well, she lasted longer than most. So that was her parting gift to you?”
“Yes. So am I?”
“Do you really want me to answer that?”
Alex sat bolt upright quickly. “So I am.”
“Look, Alex, in everything you’re a caring, interesting, and involved man”—he sighed—“except for one area—you refuse to get close to any woman you go out with. Tell me this, when was the last time you went out?”
“I took Pamela to dinner last ni
ght.”
“And what did you talk about?”
“Talk? Nothing really. We discussed the meal, finished eating, then went back to my place to play.”
“That isn’t going out. Going out is socialising, talking together, and having fun doing things together. It’s being together through good times and bad and sharing.”
“Well, I believed she enjoyed our games.”
Dan shook his head and sighed. “You know what, Alex? I love you. You’re my best friend, but one day you’re going to realise you’re all alone in the world. You won’t have anyone to warm your bed in your old age. Being in control all the time won’t get you a partner who loves you. You’ll be a lonely old bastard. No one to talk to, no one to love.”
“Love.” Alex sneered. “I don’t need love.”
“Don’t you?”
“No.”
Dan shook his head and looked at his friend. “Just because your parents both failed miserably doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible to have a happy marriage and to be in love.”
“Failed? Hell, Dan, Dad is looking at wife number four, and I’ve lost count of how many time my mother has married. Any wonder I have no faith in that institution.”
“Okay, don’t get married, but what about love? Surely there’ve been times when you’ve had feelings for one of your subs?”
“I try to avoid that. You know I do.”
“What happens if you meet a woman and you actually have feelings for her?”
“It’s never happened, Dan, and I intend that it won’t.”
Dan loudly blew out a breath. “I give up. But I tell you this, Alex. One day you’re going to come a cropper, and you won’t have any fucking idea what hit you. I just hope it happens soon—I really want to see it.”
