She realized that at some point during the night he had thrown a blanket over her naked body. She turned and looked at the bedside clock and realized that she had slept the morning away and it was almost nine. She jumped out of the bed and hurried to the bathroom. She had packed from yesterday so the only thing she had to do was straighten the bed and tidy up a little bit. Patsy had told her that she should let the maids do their jobs but she was not accustomed to people picking up after her.

It was nine-thirty before she went into the large dining room. Patsy greeted her with a cup of coffee and some delicious cereal. She was hoping she would see Scott but he was nowhere around and she did not want to ask his cousin for him. The holiday romance was over and it was back to reality for both of them.

“I hope you come back again my dear. It sure was a pleasure to meet you.” She said as she followed Kadine to the doorway. A man had come inside to take her bag from her and there was still no sign of Scott anywhere around.

She gave Patsy a hug and got into her vehicle determined not to look around to see if he was somewhere there.

“Would you tell Scott goodbye for me?” she asked as soon as she buckled up.

“Of course my dear. He left very early this morning saying he had some things to do.”

Kadine nodded and turning her music on she headed out the long winding driveway, a feeling of sadness claiming her as she left Apple Farm behind.

Scott watched her leave from a distance. He had left her still sleeping peacefully and had made his way in the dark back to his own suite but he had been unable to sleep. He had put on some clothes and headed out about six-thirty, taking only a cup of coffee with him. He had not wanted to tell her goodbye and showed her how vulnerable he was around her. He tilted the binoculars to his head and looked at her hungrily as she made her way out. He had been praying earnestly that she was pregnant and give him a reason to find her. He smiled slightly as he watched her pull the hood of her sweatshirt over her hair. She had left it loose around her shoulders and he remembered running his fingers through the thick strands. He stifled a groan and felt as if she had gone ahead with his heart in her pocketbook. The vehicle drove off and he removed the binoculars from his face, his shoulders hunched and his heart breaking!

  Chapter 6

She jogged! Whenever she had a lot on her mind, she jogged with the music blasting in her ears. This time she had put in John Legend and was jogging away to the soft mellow sound of the international singer. It had been two weeks since she had been back and she had not heard from him. Spring had made its appearance finally, but the weather was still chilly, not as much as it had been at Apple Farm. It had rained earlier and the air smelled clean. He had not called her! She had left and come home without a goodbye from him. She knew it was just a holiday romance but still she could not help the hollow in her heart.

She stopped and leaned against the bark of an old Redwood tree to catch her breath. She had gone more than her three miles and was feeling it in the ache of her limbs.

She had not shared the intimate details with anyone not even her best friend who had grilled her about her vacation. They had met for lunch sometime last week, but apart from raving about the area she had not told her that she had the most amazing couple days of sex that she had ever experienced in her life. It was too raw and too personal to share just now. She had bundled up her hair into a ponytail but most of it had escaped. With a sigh she rearranged it and continued on her way waving to several people who were out on runs as well. She had called her siblings and let them know she was back and had dived right into work. Thank God for the busy season!

  *****

Scott finally had time to breathe. Ever since Kadine had left, he had been extra busy. There had been flooding in some areas and the demands for more fruits and vegetables had captured his time and attention. But now, the second Saturday in April he had decided that he needed a time out. He had taken his private jet and had headed to the club. He had become a member of the Elite Club not just for the exclusivity because that meant little or nothing to him, but because it was a place where he was ensured anonymity and the privacy of being who he was and not being hounded by one person or the next wanting to know the secret to his success and he had become friends with several members.

He had called Bradley Wellington and asked him if he had any intention of coming out to the club and the man had told him to meet him there. He nodded to the bartender Marty and went to find a chair in one of the privacy booths. A waiter materialized immediately and he ordered a vegetable dish and something to drink. He was the supplier for most of their food items and the arrangement suited them fine. He had not been sleeping well. Apart from the fact that he had been going out early and coming in late, when he came in he would sit there and stare at nothing in particular. She was pregnant and he knew it! He had suspected it from the time they had made love at the cabin but he had been having these nauseous moments and not able to keep anything down. He had gotten his wish and he knew without a doubt that she was pregnant with triplets! It was a weird vibe that he had but his father had told him a long time ago that he had felt the same way when his mother was pregnant with them. It usually skipped a generation but maybe it was due to the fact that two out of three had died then maybe for some weird reason there was some making up going on. His father’s father had been triplets and all three had survived and made it to adulthood until they had died when they were in their seventies. He was anxious and slightly scared and had no idea how he was going to tell her that she was carrying three kids for him!

He looked up as the tall athletically built man strode into the room, a smile on his face. Bradley Wellington was a multibillionaire with a wife who had modelled internationally for years. He had married while in his late forties and now had children who were teenagers.

“Just a cup of coffee for me please,” he told the waiter as he took his seat opposite Scott. “I have not seen you in about two months man, but then again I have been reading about what you have been up to. How are you?”

“I am in love,” Scott told him abruptly as he drank the tall glass of fruit cocktail.

“What?” Brad looked at him startled. “I have not read about that.”

“You wouldn’t have.” He put his glass down and laughed shortly. “She is pregnant with my children.”

“Back way up man! What have you left out and how long ago was this?”

“I met her four weeks ago.” Scott filled him in on the details ending with the two days that they were marooned at the cabin.

Brad stared at his friend in fascination. “Does she know how you feel?”

“She does not even know she is pregnant. I started having these dizzy spells and not being able to keep down my food. I am having the symptoms and I know because it happened to my dad as well. The thing is I never told her about me being a part of triplets. I figured that would scare her away.”

“So now you are trying to figure out a way to tell her.”

“I have not called her since she left,” he moved his shoulders slightly. “I have been incredibly busy but that is not the main reason. I am new to this and I have been trying to process it. I met her and I knew from the start that she was the one. Was it the same for you and Leesa?”

“For Leesa,” he smiled tenderly as he spoke about his wife. “She knew right from the start that I was the one and she never stopped until she convinced me.”

“Maybe I should get some pointers from her,” Scott muttered. “I am going to her place of business on Monday. I have her number. but this is something that I am not going to be saying to her over the phone.”

  *****

“Mrs. Miller, I am sure we can find something suitable for you even though it is such a short notice.” Kadine told the woman patiently over the phone. She, Delia and Michael had her hands full for the spring and she was happy she had so many things to keep her occupied. She had been having these weird feelings for the past two weeks and was wondering i
f she should go to Marcia to do a check-up; she just had not gotten around to it yet.

“We would want something away from all the young people with the spring break going on.” The elderly woman aid worriedly.

“I know of the exact place where you and your husband can have absolute peace and quiet. It is a little hostel owned by a friend of mine and she renovated it just a month ago. It is more like a retreat for elderly folks just like you so I am sure you will be just fine.”

“Thank you my dear,” she said gratefully. “Our anniversary is coming up on April 15 and we want to be able to celebrate it in peace. Fifty-five years of bearing with that man is some accomplishment,” she said with a fond chuckle that got an answering response from Kadine and a twinge of envy as well.

“Congratulations,” she said softly before hanging up the phone. She rested her head back wearily against the headrest and closed her eyes. It was just after ten in the morning and she was weary already. She had no idea what was going on with her.

Her eyes flew open as her door burst open admitting an excited Delia. “You will never believe who is here!”

“I am sure you are going to tell me,” Kadine said mildly not in the least bit fazed by the woman’s theatrics.

“Scott Taylor is standing out there in my office. Scott Taylor in the flesh!”

“What?” Kadine put her seat upright abruptly and stared at the other woman in shock. He had not called her since her return and she had been conditioning her mind not to think of him.

  “Scott Taylor is–”

“I heard what you said. What does he want?” she asked.

“He would like to talk to you,” she looked at Kadine curiously probably wondering what it was all about.

“Send him in,” Kadine gestured vaguely wondering if she had put on enough makeup and whether or not she looked as tired as she felt.

“Of course,” Delia exited the office as fast as her size fourteen body could carry her.

Kadine had gotten up from around her desk when he came in and although she had prepared herself for seeing him, her breath caught as soon as he came in. Was it possible that he was more handsome than she had seen him last? She wondered. His wheat blonde hair was mussed from the breeze and the faded denims, t-shirt and light sports jacket he had on fitted him perfectly.

“Thanks Delia,” she told the woman pointedly indicating that she should close the door on her way out.

“Hi,” his dark blue eyes roved over her from head to toes taking in the chic olive green skirt suit she was wearing with the tan colored blouse tucked into the skirt. Her hair was swept back into a neat chignon at the nape of her neck and she had on a minimum amount of makeup.

“Hi.” For the first time in her life she did not know what to say to an individual especially one with whom she had been so intimate with!

  “I wanted to call you–”

“You didn’t have to–” she rushed to reassure him but he cut her off.

“What I had to say to you I could not do over the phone.” He stood there in the middle of the room and stared at her.

Her heart picked up the pace as she stared at him. “What is it?”

He came forward and reached for her hands, taking her to sit in the sofa there. “How have you been feeling?”

“Okay I guess,” she looked at him puzzled. He had her hands still captured between his and his dark blue eyes were looking at her intently. “Why?”

He took a deep breath and brought her hands up to his cheek. “I have missed you so much that I have not been able to function. I have not told you everything about me.” He took her hands down and stared at them. “I told you that I lost a brother and a sister but I never told you that I was a part of a triplet.”

Kadine looked at him puzzled. “I am sorry to hear.”

“It is more than that. You are pregnant and I am going to bet my right arm that you are carrying triplets.”

Kadine stared at him for a moment as if he had taken leave of his senses.

“I have been having nausea and rejecting certain foods. My dad told me years ago that he took the symptoms from my mother and carried them for the whole nine months. We come from a generation of triplets. Usually, it skips a generation but I am thinking that because two parts of the third died that it is making up for that fact.”

She still sat there without saying anything so he continued. “I know it is going to be hard carrying three babies–”

“Stop!” she dragged her hands away from him and stumbled to her feet. “You have no right to come here and tell me this–” she gestured with her hands as she looked at him. “I am not pregnant. We used–” she stopped as she realized that they had made love the entire time and had not thought about protection. They had been caught up so much in the intense passion of the moment that that had been the farthest thing from their minds!

“Think about it,” he got to his feet and came over to her putting his hands on her arms. “How have you been feeling?” His dark blue eyes bored into hers.

She started to shake her head but remembered how she had been planning to go to Marcia because of the way she had been feeling. “Tired mostly,” she said slowly.

“You just got back from vacation; you should not be feeling that way.” He told her softly.

“I am not pregnant,” she said stubbornly.

“I want you to let us go to the doctor together. I have some things to take care of around town but I will come back when you are finished here.” He suggested.

“No,” she pulled away from him, holding up her hands when he started to come towards. “I need time to think and I need to go by myself. Marcia is my friend and I trust her–” she broke off and stepped back a little bit. “Scott, I cannot do this right now! You should have called me–” she broke off.

“I am sorry,” he said softly wanting to fold her into his arms and take her back to the farm with him.

Her phone rang just then and she hurried to answer it. “Yes, Delia that’s okay, I am finished here now.” She hung up and turned to Scott. “I have to meet with someone. I cannot do this right now.”

  “I need your number.”

She plucked a card out and gave it to him. “I left a card at the farm.”

“I know and in my haste I left it in my room.” He took the card from her and stared at it for a moment before he looked back at her. “This is real Kadine. I have never experienced anything like this before and we both know it.”

“Do you understand what this will mean if it is really so?” she cried. “I have a business to run and I had given up hopes of having a child. I am forty-two years old Scott, and you coming to tell me that I am carrying triplets is not something I particularly want to hear.”

He came forward then and gripped her upper arms. “I have more money than I know what to do with,” he told her beseechingly. “I will hire enough nannies to help us out and I promise that I will be there for you every step of the way.”

She stared up at him and wanted to just sink into his arms for a moment. “I need time.”

He tilted her chin up and lowered his head to hers. The minute his mouth touched hers and Kadine sagged against him, her mouth opening up beneath his. Every passionate moment she had experienced came tumbling back as his tongue touched hers. They were swept back to the time in the cabin where the passion had taken them above and beyond anything they had ever experienced before! The fire unfurled deep into her belly and made its way upwards, having her cling to him tightly. He broke off the kiss, his breath harsh against her mouth. “I need to see you later,” he told her hoarsely.

She started to shake her head but stopped. She needed to see him too or she was going to die!

“Yes,” she whispered as she leaned against him weakly. “Yes.”

  *****

Doctor Marcia Barnwell stared at her friend in shock. “How?”

Kadine moved her shoulders restlessly as she looked at her friend. She had left work early in order to c
ome and see her friend.

“I met someone when I was on vacation.”

“Who is this wonderful man that got you to open your legs and got you pregnant?” She said in delight.

“It’s not funny.” Kadine muttered and I am not sure I am really pregnant. I have no symptoms but he said he has been getting them. Is that possible?”

  “Absolutely. Who is he?”

“Scott Taylor,” she responded and laughed at the stupefied expression on her friend’s face.

“The billionaire organic farmer? The totally hot farmer that has been showcased on most of the farm and organic magazines? That Scott Taylor?”

  “That same one,” she grinned.

“Bitch you have been holding out on me.”

“It was too much and too soon for me to be sharing it with anyone, even you.” She said seriously. “It is too much Marcia. When he touches me I want to explode with the passion I feel. The two days we spent marooned inside his cabin was unbelievable! This triplet thing is driving me crazy and I am not sure what to believe.”

“Okay, first we are seeing if he is right and then we go from there.”

They went together in one of the examination rooms and Kadine took off her clothes putting on the robe and going onto the bed. Marcia did a thorough examination not saying anything until she had finished and then told her to get dressed and meet her in the office.

Kadine got dressed slowly and sat on the side of the surgical bed, her body shivering slightly. Without Marcia telling her anything, she knew what she was going to say, she had seen the expression on her face.

Marcia was making notes on a pad when she went back into the office and did not look up when she took a seat beside her desk.

She looked up after a while and looked at her friend. “You are pregnant,” she said slowly clasping her hands together. “About four weeks. It is too soon for me to tell whether or not it is multiple pregnancies yet.”

Kadine exhaled slowly. “He was right.”

“Yes, and chances are that he is right about the triplets. I am a GP as you know, honey, and not equipped to deal with this sort of thing. You are going to have to find an OBGYN.”
