1999: Cardiff pubs were allowed to stay open all night for the celebration of the new millennium. There was a concert by the Manic Street Preachers in the Millennium Stadium and various noisy celebrations throughout the city centre, ignoring the widespread doom-laden warnings about how the dreaded ‘Millennium Bug’ would cause computers and aircraft to crash worldwide. Purists continued in vain to assert that the twenty-first century did not in fact begin for another twelve months – but it was clear that they had lost the argument. (South Wales Echo)
