“True,” Clay agreed.
“So, what are we going to do?” she asked him, hugging a pillow to her as she sat next to him on the sofa.
“Whatever we have to,” he told her honestly, putting an arm around her shoulders and drawing her to him. “Whatever we have to.”
“Ashes,” she whispered, not looking at him.
“What?”
“You said that the fire that had been America had burned out, remember?” she reminded him. “All that was left was ashes. So, here we are,” she whispered mournfully. “Left sitting in a pile of ashes and surrounded by ruin.”
There was nothing Clay could add to that. He did notice as he looked outside that it was snowing again. Large, heavy and wet flakes, falling like confetti that never stopped.
He noted idly that it looked like ashes, falling from a fire burning in the sky.

So, another chapter in the Sanders’ Saga is complete. I owe many thanks to my family for their support of me as I write. For things that I forget to do, or else don’t have time to do, for the times they have to call me for a third, or fourth, or even fifth time for something before they get through to me.

When I started this series, you would never have convinced me that I would be sitting here, typing an afterword for an eleventh novel in the series. It’s staggering to my mind just to think of it. That, again, is due to you, the reader. The only appropriate way I can think of to thank you is to try and keep the Sanders’ Clan as active as I can, for as long as I can entertain you with their story. As long as I can entertain you, as long as I can create an imaginary world that all of us can hide in, even for a few hours, then I’ve done my job. I can’t take pride in my work until you, the reader, are satisfied that I did good. That’s the greatest thing a storyteller can be told, folks. That we did good and you, the reader, were entertained by what we’ve created. Thanks for that, along with everything else.
The holidays are coming, and I hope all of you have a safe and happy holiday season. I wish only the best for each and every one of you, and offer you a humble thanks for letting me be a ‘real’ writer. If it weren’t for you, none of that would happen.
