I walked over to stand next to John, placing my hand on his shoulder. “You don’t want to dismantle her because you’ll kill her.”

His amber eyes flicked upward to meet my gaze. “Can you blame me?”

My lips pursed, and I shook my head. “Of course, I can’t.”

The three of us mulled in silence as each took a moment to register our task.

We first had to ensure Alexandria’s survival. Second would be to stop Mordred from getting whatever that damned contract had promised him. And third—I glanced down at John’s slumped shoulders—try to save the woman John loved in the same breath as trying to dismantle her.

“This isn’t going to be easy, Arthur,” Merlin mused.

I turned in his direction. “Nothing ever is anymore, Merlin.” I patted John on the back. “We need to think of a way to get Diana’s body away from whatever system she is plugged into to service her artificial form.” John’s body tensed beneath my hand. “I don’t want to lose anyone else when we go in there.”

Merlin smiled softly to himself at my assessment. I usually jumped into a quest, war, or problem with no thought of anyone but myself. The fact I acknowledged John’s fear showed the change Alexandria instilled in me.

John nodded. “I agree. We’ll need to talk to Vivian to go over the research again, but it should be possible.”

“Good.” My hand patted John’s back. “Now come, we must eat and speak with David and Isaac about their roles in all of this.”

Merlin and I hung back as John exited the room and left the two of us alone.

“I am pleased you are able to use your powers to their full potential, Arthur.” Merlin stared straight ahead as he spoke. “You have been resurrected in full.”

I pondered his words carefully. “Only two things are missing.”

“Vivian and I will forge Excalibur to be compatible with your suit,” he reassured me. “And the other thing I assume is Alexandria.”

My hands balled into fists. “I won’t rest until she returns to me. I will fight every day until she is safe.”

Merlin looked over his shoulder at me. “Then we should get started.”

I followed my mentor and old friend down the flagstone steps to the carpeted corridor.

I didn’t care how long it took.

I didn’t care the pain I would endure.

  Alexandria would return to me.

I swear this on my life.

  EPILOGUE

  Mordred

A soft knock came at my office door. I chose to work late tonight as an excuse to meet someone very important. Of course, this interfered with Elaine’s dinner plans, but the little minx could wait.

I never expected Morgan’s spell to work so easily on the spirited woman. Nevertheless, having someone to come home to was a nice difference. Well, depending on the day. Some nights, it was like having a yapping little dog on my heels, and then I would have to spell her to sleep.

“Come in.” I stood behind the grand oak desk and smoothed my hand down my suit jacket.

Morgan appeared in my doorway, her black gaze piercing me with her scorn. “The courier you ordered has arrived, sir.” She spat out the word sir like a bitter taste on her tongue. It amused me.

“Send him in, please.” I moved around to stand in front of my desk. “And then do stay, Morgan. I want to watch your expression when you see what exactly I have collected.”

The woman who looked so much like my father yet didn’t at the same time merely nodded her head in response.

She is such a bitch that some days I forget she is my aunt. I chuckled to myself as the door clicked shut momentarily before opening.

A man entered carrying a medium sized package. “Where do you want this?”

“On the table, thank you.” I followed him and watched his every move.

When he stepped back, he offered his hand. “My name is Lucian Cain. I was told to handle this with care.” He smirked, patting the cardboard box.

I regarded him curiously. His long silver hair was tied back, and violet eyes seemed to glow in the darkness of my dim office. One thing was for sure; he wasn’t fully human.

We shook hands. “Nice to meet you, Lucian. I hope everything is in order?”

“It’s all there.” I reached to touch the box, but his hand caught my wrist roughly, and my eyes widened at his inhuman strength. “Just to be clear, Mordred, you get one shot. The only reason I am upholding our end of the bargain is because we’re contracted. If you mess this up, it’s on you.”

I frowned at Lucian and narrowed my eyes. “Rest assured; I know the risks involved in this endeavor.”

The stranger let my hand go, and I saw Morgan standing with her back to the door, watching the two of us.

Lucian studied me for a moment before he stepped back. “I hope, for your sake, revenge is worth this, Mordred.”

I ignored his comment. “Thank your contact for me.”

“Will do,” he muttered, pausing in front of Morgan before leaving us alone.

As soon as the door shut behind him, I tore open the package.

Morgan cautiously came closer, peeking over my shoulder. “What has gotten you all excited?”

My eager hands reached into the box and gripped the kingpin of my plan. I gently lifted the artifact, encased in a glass box, out of the package and placed it on the table.

“I cannot believe my eyes, Morgan.” I marveled at the miracle before me. “Have you ever seen something so amazing in your life?”

A perfectly manicured brow of hers arched as she shook her head. “It looks like a rusty nail.” Her hand raised in confusion. “What the hell is this, Mordred?”

I placed both of my hands on either side of the box and inhaled deeply. “This is my life’s work.”

“A rusty blade?” She scoffed at my seemingly crazy antics, but she didn’t know—yet.

“Not just any rusty blade, Morgan.” I grinned from ear to ear. “This is the Lance of Longinus Spear.”

  Immediately, the room grew silent.

“This is what I will use to propel my father into oblivion.” A surge of energy flowed through my veins. “This shall allow me to delve into the depths of my power and silence his.”

Morgan stumbled away from me. “Mordred, this is wrong. You can’t be serious.”

“You knew which side you chose all those years ago, Morgan,” I hissed, turning to face her. “Don’t back out now because you have evolved a conscience.” I reached into my suit jacket pocket and pulled out the glowing orb that was her heart.

That was right—my own flesh and blood willingly gave me her life in order to save the man she loved. And that man now stared at her every day with cold, unrelenting hate in his eyes.

“Don’t … Mordred, please.” I backed her into the wall.

“Then do not question me on how I conduct my business.” I place the essence of Morgan’s heart back into my pocket. “I saved him, for you.”

“He hates me now because of you.” She pushed me off her.

  I let her go.

“Unrequited love, isn’t it a damn shame?” I called after her.

Now I was alone with my prized possession.

  My ultimate weapon.

“Try to come after me now, King Arthur …” A sinister laugh erupted from my throat. “And I’ll send you straight to hell.”
