  "What happened?" she asked.

"Justice was served," he replied and kissed her.

He didn't like to keep secrets from her but he didn't know how he was going to tell anyone about the coming war or the great evil that threatened the world. He was going to have to do his duty as a detective but now he had a greater calling, as a soldier of God.

At Sosa's funeral, he thought a lot about the man's faith. Sosa had believed in God in order to deal with the horrors he saw in the city. Carter had let himself deny religion all his life but now he had to let God into his heart because it was the only way he could hope to defeat the Lords of Baal. It was just him and Father Constantine at the moment but he hoped that the priest could rustle up a few allies otherwise it would be a short war indeed. Until then he would look deeply into himself and examine his own philosophy. He needed to come to terms with his views on religion if he was to give himself fully to the forthcoming fight.

Sosa's wife and children wept bitterly on that cold afternoon. Carter shed a tear too although later when he was in private. He went out for a run as usual but stopped when he reached Father Constantine's church. The doors were open but there were few people in there and Father Constantine was nowhere to be found.

Outside the same vagrant stood in the shadows although Carter didn't see him this time. Carter stood in the middle of the church and looked up at all the religious pictures. He then walked forward to the candles and lit one for Sosa. Mick had a lot of ambition and now Carter was the only one left in the race. It could easily have been Carter who died though, and it was only by the grace of God that he had made it through this alive. Carter still wasn't sure how to reconcile God's plan for the world when men like Sosa died so cruelly but it was becoming clear to him now that Father Constantine was right. The Earth was a battleground between good and evil.

That night Carter did something he hadn't done for a long time. He got down on his knees clasped his hands together and prayed. He prayed for Nicky and his son Robbie, he prayed for Father Constantine and Mick Sosa, he prayed for Sosa's family, and he prayed for Eddie and his own family. Life was always made up of the decisions people made along the way. Criminals often made bad ones. Carter truly believed that.

This time he was making the decision to believe, to trust in God and hope that it would see him and all his loved ones to safety.
