The Moth Man (Alex Hastings Series)

She felt a shiver run down her spine and resisted the urge to go to the window again, just in case. The sound of the phone snapped her out of her cycle of fear and she answered it, not caring if it were her family with a new crisis or someone from work or her most boring friend. Until Sue got home from her evening visits she just wanted to talk to someone.
‘Alex?’ came a familiar voice. ‘Alex, got some good news, I hope. They finally made their minds up and offered me that post at Shepton. Starts beginning of August. Alex?’
Alex felt the tension drain out of her body and a slow grin spread across her face.
‘Margie – that’s wonderful. Congratulations – I know how much you wanted it.’
‘Yeah, so I’ll be down your way all the time,’ said Margie. ‘If you’s free this weekend we could meet up and you can give me some tips on where’s best to live …’
Alex replaced the receiver and went out to the kitchen where the evening meal was bubbling away in a pot. She had started to feel her ties with Highpoint were loosening as the work changed more towards punishment, the demands of management grew larger and louder every month and her friends suffered mishaps or worse but now …
Now she knew she would stay and do her absolute best for all the broken lives placed in her care. Now Samuel faded into the background and lost the power to frighten her. Now she had something to hang on to.
