Micky stopped, pulled a Marlboro from his pack, and lit it. He stared at the microphone for a long time, then pulled it toward him again, exhaling a big cloud of smoke.

“If Wattana can’t stop what he started, then what we’re doing is forming an army. If he’s got more people with him than he said, then they’ll either help us kill as many of these sick puppies as we can, or they won’t.

“Either way, we got a crazy war on our hands, folks. One against real, true-to-life, zombies. Don’t get me wrong. I’m no goddamned hero. I’m just a classic rock radio DJ who kinda digs living his life – and I’d like to keep doing that. If you also like breathing and eating things other than people, you’re welcome to join us.

“Someone just told me we’re currently in a town called Paducah, Kentucky. It’s a quiet little burg when the zombies aren’t calling, but it seems no matter how small the town, they’re here. Oh. Stay out of the big cities. Just a warning.

“We’re overnighting here, then I understand we have about 700 miles to ride. I’ve picked up a group of about twenty-two people at last count, but when we convoy through, those who’ve heard my broadcasts come out.

“We want you with us, if you’re civil. If you’re not, fend for yourself. We’ve got enough trouble on our hands.”

Rode put the microphone down and switched off the transmitter. He wrapped up the cords, dismantled the portable antenna, and put it all away.

He’d broadcast 24 hours from then, as he’d been doing from the start of his journey from Buckingham, Florida.

No matter what really happened with Climbing Fox Wattana, he knew one thing for certain: The zombie war had begun.

If Wattana was alive, he needed to stay that way. He might be the only person on earth capable of putting an end to the madness.
