  “Sara.”

There was a hint of irritation in Joe’s voice, and rightly so. He’d just proposed marriage in front of a score of witnesses, and the woman he’d asked to be his wife had promptly dissolved in gales of laughter, nearly flopping out of her chair.

“I’m sorry.” Sara sat up straighter, swiped at her eyes and tried to pull herself together. “It’s just that...” Another giggle got loose. “It’s just that... I never told you. I’m afraid of flying, Joe.”

Then it was the two of them laughing until their sides ached, until Sara was worried that Joe’s stitches might come undone. The entire Decker clan was staring at them, stupefied, unable to understand what could possibly be so funny about a proposal of marriage or somebody’s fear of flying.

“Okay,” Joe said finally, barely managing to stifle his laughter. “How about a train to New York?”

“That would work,” Sara said as she dabbed at her eyes with a corner of her napkin.

Across the table, Joe’s brother Mike leaned forward. “I’m confused here. Are you two getting married, or what?”

Joe took her hand and kissed it, then whispered, “One thing at a time, Campbell. One thing at a time. First just say yes.”

  “Yes.”
