Tricia drew a sigh of relief. There was still a chance for her. She glanced at Prince Lawrence. He winked at her. What did that mean? Her heart beat faster, but she was afraid to guess.
Lawrence rose and tapped a goblet. “Ladies and gentlemen. I wish to make an announcement. The queen has not correctly stated my intentions. I have chosen Patricia Parker, whose parents have lived in Cordillera for several months, as my bride to be, and while she is not of our country, I hope you will soon come to love her almost as much as I do.” He grasped Tricia’s hand and pulled her to her feet. Lifting her hand to his lips, he kissed her palm and whispered. “Now that it’s a fait accompli, my aunt won’t dare to contradict me or try to force some other lady of noble birth upon me.”
He beamed, and his brown eyes shone, reflecting the glimmer of all the candles burning in silver candlesticks on the table. Turning to her, he asked, “Would you like to say something?”
Her heart swelling with gladness, Tricia took a deep breath and willed her voice to remain steady. “I want to marry the prince because he is good and honorable and charming. Because he puts the good of Cordillera above his own wishes, and because he loves me.”
Everyone clapped and cheered.
The king stepped around the queen and clapped a hand on his nephew’s shoulder. “Like my daughter who is carrying my grandson, I expect you to produce a grandnephew soon.”
Tricia felt heat rising to her face as the king made his way back to the queen’s side. Tricia leaned close to Lawrence. “It may happen sooner than he expects. I hope that pleases you.”
Lawrence’s face glowed. “That suits me just fine, my love.”

About the Author
As a teenager, Carolyn Rae told stories to her younger sister on a long road trip.
She taught home economics in Michigan, Illinois, and Texas, earned a master’s degree, and also taught English. In Illinois, she worked for a mincemeat company and met her neighbors with samples of mincemeat pie. She taught cooking, ironwork, painting, and carpentry inmates at a Federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas, where she also wrote and directed videos on nutrition and fair fighting for married couples.
Carolyn Rae wrote the text and many recipes for There IS Life After Lettuce (Eakin Press, Fort Worth, Texas), a cookbook for heart patients and diabetics. Her articles have been published in the Romance Writer’s Report, Fort Worth Star Telegram, The Dallas Morning News, Positive Parenting, and AAA World, Hawaii and Alaska. She has worked as a paralegal and follows her passion, writing romantic suspense where bullets are flying, people are dying, and lovers must resist attraction until they are safe.
