  After her brief speech, Hernandez left the dais, and shortly after that the first of a series of votes began.

  Husher knew that no matter what was decided today, the decisions would truly reflect the will of the people. Since each representative’s campaign was now publicly funded, he or she voted based solely on what their constituents wanted, as only by carrying out their will could they possibly get reelected.

  The long hours of voting ended with a number of resolutions that would become the guiding principles and policy for the new military: while the Commonwealth would continue investing in their space force, and continue trying to find a method for safely reaching other galaxies, they would not embark on any offensive war.

  They voted against invading other galaxies in an attempt to find a species that might not exist.

  But they do exist. And they will come.

  Husher didn’t know how he knew, except that it was probably similar to the way Admiral Keyes had known humanity’s reliance on dark tech would almost destroy them. He felt it as an uneasiness deep down in his gut.

  Then and there, Husher quietly made the same vow Keyes had so many years ago:

  I will make sure we’re ready for what’s coming. No matter the cost.
