  Bony stood smiling at Superintendent Pavier. Pavier left his chair. Perhaps he guessed how the report was worded, for he said with unwonted warmth:

  “Gentlemen, my congratulations. To you, Bonaparte, our thanks.”

  Bony shook hands with Crome and Abbot. With Pavier, they accompanied him to the door, and when shaking hands with the Superintendent, Bony said:

  “Au revoir! I shall be returning in the near future. You see, I expect to be best man at a burglar’s wedding.”
