When Civil Servants Fail

however, I would have preferred taking a bike or a cheap car – it does not suit to look in garbage cans when you arrive with a Bentley. However, I did not waste time to raise the topic for Mr. Smith.

Having taken gloves, a coat and an umbrella as precaution against the unpredictable weather, I went to my dutiful excursion. I drove Strandvejen, the partly seaside avenue, towards North to the place Mr. Smith had indicated. At daytime, you can see the hunting castle, and on the other side, looking over a beach, there is a restaurant, which was now closed. There is a large parking lot there, but I decided to park the Bentley further away, for the reasons already given. It was indeed difficult to find a place to park it, so my snobbish feelings provided me with a stupid long walk. It even seemed more ridiculous as I immediately found what I looked for and cautiously put the plastic bag into another. At the Eastern lane, an uninterrupted row of cars with blinding lights were heading homewards after work, whereas my return southward in direction of Copenhagen City was largely free.

“I found only one plastic bag where you expected, only I am not certain what it has been used for. I looked for a description of its purpose, possibly with an instruction how to use it for murder, but there is absolutely no trace of anything written. How do you know it is the right one?”

“Mr. Erlandsson will take care of that. He just called and will be here in ten minutes. I only make my deductions

”… leaving the physical work to others, yes I noticed,” I responded bitterly. Then I typed the requested timeline in a hurry:

20:20 Mr. Lockwood leaves the firm. He is immediately held up by Mr. X.

20:30 Mr. Lockwood is transferred to the backseat of his car, handcuffed and blindfolded.

~21:00 Mr. Lockwood arrives in the forest parking lot between Skodsborg and Nærum.

21:05 Mr. Gusto arrives at Lockwood’s home.

21:08 Mrs Lockwood calls Mr. Andersen.

21:11 Mr. Gusto calls Mr. Erlandsson

~21:15 Mr. Lockwood has been moved to the finding place, about to be murdered as suddenly a car approaches.

21:17 Mr. Erlandsson calls back with the information where to find Mr. Lockwood’s mobile telephone.
