Love Loss Revenge

  "What happened? Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. I fell and smashed up my knee," Rian hugged her tightly, then drew away and got in the driver's side of the car. Ari walked around to the passenger side and got in.

"What do we do now?" Ari said.

"We wait," Rian said. She kept her goggles on the compound until the sun came up. She switched to regular binoculars and watched as the compound came alive. She saw multiple guys outside walking around smoking cigarettes. When a small car approached the gate she sat up straight.

Ari was dozing in the seat next to her. She leaned over and bumped her. "Wake up, baby."

"What's going on?" Ari said as she yawned and stretched.

  "I think Walsh just arrived."

She watched the car come to a stop and the guard at the gate got in the passenger side.

The car proceeded up the driveway and parked behind the other cars. When the driver stepped out Rian was sure it was Walsh, there was no mistaking his shape.

  "This is it," she said.

Ari strained her eyes to see, but she could only see the outline of the compound.

"Do you like fireworks, Ari?" Rian asked as she watched the men enter the house.

  "Yes, who doesn't?"

"Good." Rian put down the binoculars and picked up her cell phone. Each of the phones she wired up as detonators were programmed into her phone and set up for two three-way calls. She checked her watch and waited five more minutes. Then, she dialed the first three-way call. The first three phones buried in the dirt began to vibrate and the shock had enough power going to the wires to set off the blasting caps. Each one ignited in a small explosion that set the C4 off.

All of a sudden there were multiple explosions that rocked the ground hard enough to shake the car they were sitting in a mile away. Rian quickly dialed the other call and the cars exploded in balls of fire that pushed them up off the ground. The house and two buildings next to the cars blew to pieces with flames licking the sky and fragments floating to the ground. The entire compound looked like a war zone as black smoke filled the air.

Rian knew what justice was and what it felt like, and she'd heard of bittersweet revenge, but she didn't know what that felt like until now.

"Oh my god," Ari whispered as she watched in shock. She was surprised that she didn't shed a single tear for the monster she called Father as she watched the inferno.

Rian kept the binoculars trained on the area and was satisfied when she saw no one escaped the horrendous blast. They stayed parked there long enough to watch the remains burn to the ground. The authorities and fire trucks were beginning to head in that direction as they drove away.

They crossed a bridge over the river and Rian tossed her cell phone out the window over the top of the car. It flew over the side of the bridge and sank to the bottom before their car was even off the bridge.

"How did you know how to do all of that?" Ari asked softly.

Rian looked over at her and grabbed her hand. "You'd be surprised at what the American Government taught me," she said as she looked back at the road.

Ari turned her head towards the window. She wasn't sure if she believed her, but she had no other choice. There was no reason to pry into Rian's past. She knew better than anyone about having a past you wanted to forget. Thanks to Rian, a murdering monster was no longer a threat to the world and their lives were no longer in jeopardy.

  "Where are we going?"

"The airport," Rian smiled. "You have a few hours to decide our next destination."

  Epilogue

Rian was sitting on the balcony of their rented apartment reading the news on her laptop and watching the gondolas in the water down below. She and Ari had been in Venice close to six months with no sign of trouble from the U.S. or Argentina. Rian scanned pages and pages of national news and Buenos Aires news daily looking for any indication that the authorities had a lead. After the first couple of days, the explosion slowly became old news.

When Rian finally got word to Leann she was surprised to hear the news of the blast in Argentina had become national news. Leann asked her if she had anything to do with it and Rian simply reminded her of don't ask, don't tell. The less she knew the better off she was.

Ari walked outside and sat down in the chair next to Rian. The diamond on her left hand glistened in the sunlight. Rian was shocked when Ari pulled the ring from her pocket the day they arrived in Venice and asked her to put it back on her hand.

"Anything good in the news?" Ari asked.

Rian took a sip of her coffee. "So far nothing interesting," she said as she continued to read. She gasped and turned pale. Ari watched the mug she was holding hit the concrete and smash into pieces as hot coffee splashed the ground. Rian turned the computer towards Ari.

The bold headline read: Explosion Survivor Leaves Hospital.

  "Oh my god," Ari whispered.
