  Angie~

Daniel in dragon form was so magnificent he took her breath away. As he had done since their nuptial flight. He was deep Lindorm blue as most dragons of his house were. His wings were twenty-four feet across when he unfurled their glossy leather. His diamond-hard scales possessed the faintest rim of deep green and his tail dart, curving horns, and razor-sharp talons were emerald.

She mounted his back. She trusted Daniel not to dump her into the ocean, but nevertheless she had created a saddle which was more of a space capsule than some maharajah’s ornamental howdah. Thick shoulder straps and a lap belt prevented her from falling out.

Daniel kept circling. She had reins, but she remembered that pulling them was useless. Like trying to stop a car by pulling on the steering wheel. Daniel did not take direction. Much better to lean back and enjoy the sights and smell of the ocean.

It was almost as much fun as sailing. The breeze intensified the delicious briny smell of the Pacific. A scent subtly distinct from the North Atlantic. Lovely. She removed the hair pins from her braided bun and let the wind pass through her hair. It flew behind her like a flag. Her scalp relaxed. She began to hum.

Beneath her, her dragon began to join her in song. His whistling resonated through her whole body. As if the vibrations reached her womb, the baby began a gentle tapping almost in time with its father’s music. She was being fanciful. Yet her dragon’s flying-music transported her to an earlier time when their love was new and he was wooing her.

It made the old promises of eternal fidelity. Swore she was treasured beyond all other women. Loved more than life itself. She knew these pledges to be half-truths, but her heart responded to them anyway.

  She for
got the sea was his mistress. The Navy his master. Her entire being suffused with longing. Not just a physical sexual arousal, but a psychic yearning. Her aura and his united as they used to do in perfect harmony.

Gradually Daniel drifted down to the sailboat, turning in a wide gentle spiral, so their descent was almost imperceptible. But by the time they landed on the water, every cell in her body was vibrating in time with his. He hovered over the small craft so she could clamber aboard.

One wave of her hand and her saddle and harness vanished. But Daniel did not return to human. He rose once more in the air and soared on the wind, before diving back down to the water. In a display of muscular finesse, he danced for her on the surface of the water, using the enormous strength of his wings to appear to be supported solely by the ocean.

He danced as he had danced on the beach when they were young. Curvetting and bowing and singing his mating song. Dragons were an ancient race, descended from birds. His mating dance was both instinctive and practiced. They had danced it together in happier times.

Every wave of his brilliant wings brought her his scent on the wind. The aroma of fully aroused male dragon. Her male. Her mate. He waggled himself enticingly at her. A flush spread over her face and breasts. Her sex grew full and hot. He was doing it deliberately.

But she did not want him to stop. It was all she could do to resist the urge to join him, to spread her own wings and dance on the rippling waves. She was strong, but probably not strong enough to pull off this display of raw masculine power and potency, and dance on water.

And all the while he beguiled her, he sang. The deep notes heated Angelina’s blood. Thrummed in her veins. She craved him as she had not done in years. Desired a perfect union of body and spirit. A union with her one true mate. By the time he spun in one last glorious display of physical virtuosity, and stepped into the boat in a sudden transformation, she was teetering on the verge of release.

Even the wild rocking of the small vessel as a large upright male stalked her was exciting. He picked her up and squatted until he was seated. Her legs automatically embraced his naked waist.

“Undress yourself,” he ordered. “Or shall I do it?”

They were likely to drown if he ripped her garments off. It would take too long if he did it. Excuses tossed around in her sex-maddened mind like leaves in a gale. She blinked her clothes away.

Daniel’s mouth took hers in an intimate kiss. His tongue tangled fiercely with hers. This was no gentle salutation such as the kiss he had given her in the store. This was an elemental sharing of breath, spit, and need. Her own mouth was just as greedy as his. Back and forth they dueled in time with one another. First one and then the other exploring the most secret recesses and savoring the flavor of the other.

A gust of wind had him pulling back to check the boat. “It’s fine,” he growled. His hands left her waist to travel over her bump. “Mine.” He kissed her again. But this time, his pace was slower, more the sipping of a connoisseur than the reckless gobbling of a horny pirate.

He was a hard pole against her bottom. She reached behind her to squeeze it. “Mine,” she challenged him.

  “Always. Yours and only yours.”

  Mystic Bay Series Book 4

  CHAPTER ONE

  June,

  Fairchild’s Art Supply,

  Mystic Bay, Oregon

  Angie~

She elbowed the swinging door aside and carried the stack of canvases onto the shop floor. She smelled him first. While she had been fetching the special order from the dim stock room, the summer sun had come out in all its glory, temporarily blinding her. Strong arms lifted the canvases from her grasp.

“You shouldn’t be carrying those in your condition.” His well-remembered voice was as arrogant as ever. It still made her heart quiver.

Angie glowered at her husband. “They weigh almost nothing.” Which wasn’t exactly the truth. But after all she was a dragoness, and stronger than most mortal women. Six artists’ canvases weren’t a strain. Even these oversized ones.

The real question was how Daniel had discovered she was pregnant.

The canvases appeared small in Daniel’s muscled hands. Celeste Greene, who had ordered them, was timid at the best of times. The presence of a towering, furious dragon was frightening the gazelle shifter half to death.

Daniel’s blond good looks and designer clothing did not conceal that he was a powerful predator. If you were sensitive to auras, his plainly exuded a threat.

“Make yourself useful,” Angie snapped. “Celeste wants those canvases stashed in the backseat of her SUV.” She turned to Celeste and gave her a reassuring smile and pulsed a calming spell at her chaotic aura. “Do you need to take the car seat out?” Celeste had a four-year-old.

“N-n-no,” poor Celeste stammered. Instinctively she folded her arms against herself and stood still. Making herself hard to spot. As if.

“Did you lock the car?” Angie asked even more gently.

Celeste nodded and held out her keys as if she expected to be bitten to the bone. Daniel suddenly realized he was the source of the gazelle’s twitchy behavior. Angie felt another pulse of calming magic as he too damped down Celeste’s anxiety. About time. The gazelle stopped shaking, but the whites of her eyes still showed.

“Where is your vehicle?” Daniel asked in his precise way.

Celeste’s mouth opened and closed. No sound emerged.

“It’s the forest green SUV parked right by the door,” Angie said. “While Daniel is putting them in your car, Celeste, why don’t you pay the balance due?”

Celeste found her wallet and credit card. Angie quickly rang up the sale. Celeste was still wide-eyed as she slipped out the door Daniel was holding open for her. She snatched her keys from his hand before she scurried off down the sidewalk.

“You do realize she’s off to the coffee shop to inform all of Mystic Bay that there’s a new hunter in town?” Angie asked wearily.

Daniel shrugged, a fluid ripple of broad, muscular shoulders. Angie’s mouth dried. It wasn’t fair. How could he still have this effect on her? After all these years? After all that had passed between them?

“What the heck are you doing here?” he demanded. He cast his blue eyes around in a disparaging circle. His handsome features were stiff with anger.

The century building was in good repair. The store recently renovated. It was organized, clean, bright and inviting. Racks of hand-painted greeting cards provided a splash of color by the front door. The shelves of canvases, paints, solvents, and other raw materials of the artists’ trades were less flashy but neatly arranged. Fairchild’s Art Supply didn’t deserve Daniel’s scorn.

“I’m the new manager.” She ignored his real question. How dare you put me to the trouble of looking for you, wife?

His blue eyes narrowed. His chest swelled. Despite his elegant facade, and high naval rank, deep down he was a throwback to one of his berserker Viking ancestors. “My wife doesn’t need to work in some backwater store.”

Angie rolled her eyes. Typical alpha male. Daniel Lindorm was as rich as any other dragon from his clan. These days the House of Lindorm might choose to call their stash the Lindorm Fund, but that was just a pretty euphemism for a dragon hoard that would choke a brontosaurus.

Daniel didn’t sit around on his tight dragon ass clipping coupons. No, like most of his kin, he was a military officer. A flottiljamiralin or rear admiral in the Swedish Royal Navy and a member of their Special Operations. But his wife was above getting her hands dirty. She could sit on a cushion and twiddle her thumbs as a symbol of Daniel’s importance. The hell she could.

“My cousin owns this store. She’s just had a baby, and I’m helping out.” Why the heck was she answering her pushy husband’s implicit question? Old habits certainly died hard. “What are you doing in Myst
ic Bay? Shouldn’t you be saving the free world?” The sarcasm just slipped out.

He grew taller and broader before her eyes. “I came for you,” he said simply. “Did you think I wouldn’t?”

She shrugged. “I’m surprised you even noticed I’d left.”

That made him even angrier. The glory of the afternoon sun backlit his huge frame and gave his perfect blond hair a brilliant halo. He was magnificent. Just like the young dragon who had stolen her heart all those years ago. Toughen up, Angie. Thirty-three years is enough neglect.

“Oh, I noticed,” he growled. His hands reached out and plucked her from behind the shelter of the broad counter. She flew through the air and landed safely against his heaving chest. His mouth descended.

He was furious. She could taste his fury. But his mouth was gentle. Seducing. How could he do this to her? Her anger melted at the touch of his tongue against hers. The taste of her man. Her arms wound around his neck. She returned his kiss. Only a throat being cleared behind her brought her back to her senses.

She shoved at Daniel’s rock-hard chest. He set her down, bracing her until she was balanced on her strappy, high-heeled sandals. She was sure he had felt the change in her body as she slid down his torso. In slow motion, he turned his head to scowl at the intruder. His face turned crimson. His eyes flashed his get-the-hell-out-of-my-sight-sailor command.

A slight man in a khaki uniform gazed back blandly from watery blue eyes. “Everything okay, Angie?”

Angie sighed. “Just peachy, Walter. This is my husband, Admiral Daniel Lindorm. Daniel, this is the sheriff of Mystic Bay, Walter Babcock.”

Walter was a rabbit shifter, a trembler like Celeste. But unlike Celeste, he returned Daniel’s hard stare with one of his own. He held out a hand and the two men shook. Testosterone hung in the air like smog.

Daniel let go of Walter’s tiny hand. Wally squared his narrow shoulders and adjusted the gadgets festooning his belt. He had been a good deputy, and he was a good sheriff, preferring to patrol his town on foot rather than stay in his air-conditioned office.

“You scared the bejesus out of Ms. Greene just now, Admiral,” Walter said sternly. “I just want to remind you that there’s no hunting on West Haven. The entire island – not just the town – is a sanctuary. Understood?”
