‘You don’t like it?’ I say acting surprised.

  ‘I did before, but …’

He lifts my chin and looks into my eyes.

‘Binki Grayson, will you do me the honour of marrying me and preferably in a different dress.’

I try to smile but I can barely see him through my tears of happiness.

  ‘Yes,’ I say.

There is applause from behind us and I turn to see Mum, Dad, Muffy and Max in the doorway.

‘I couldn’t have wished for anything better,’ I hear Mum whisper to Muffy. Honestly, my mum.

‘God moves in mysterious ways,’ nods the vicar.

‘Well, even if he turns out to be a little shit at least he’ll be a rich little shit,’ Muffy says.

  ‘Muffy,’ I snap.

  ‘Just saying,’ she smiles.

William laughs and takes my hand.

‘Shall we make our exit? Call it a practice run.’

We leave the vestry to the applause of the congregation. I already feel married and smile when I know I still have that pleasure to come.

Aunty Vera left me the best inheritance ever. I can somehow imagine her looking down from heaven. It wouldn’t surprise me if she planned the whole thing; she always was a bit of a minx. Thank you Aunty Vera, I couldn’t have wished for a better legacy.
