Logan shook his head with a little laugh and kissed Sam. Sam didn't flinch or startle; he responded right away. He opened his mouth for Logan, granted him admittance and let him taste as much as he wanted. Logan pulled him closer and ran his hands over Sam's broad back, moving them down to the round swell of his ass.

"Tell me you want this, Sam." Logan pulled back for air and met Sam's eyes. He'd stop if Sam wanted him to, he wasn't that kind of guy, but he needed to know.

Sam pulled his tee shirt up over his head and tossed it toward the closet door. He held out his muscular arms. "I want this. I want you. Come on. We've been waiting, Logan."

Logan didn't need to be told twice. He stripped off his dress shirt and divested himself of his neatly pressed pants, and then he chucked his undershirt and briefs as well. "We have been waiting way too long."

Sam kicked off his jeans and moved over to the bed. He reached into his bedside table and pulled out lube and condoms. "I don't want to pressure you, but just in case." He ducked his head and gave a coy little smile.

Logan licked his lips and let his eyes drink Sam in. He looked amazing, long and lean against the dark gray sheets. His cock stood, hungry and proud, against his belly. Everything in Logan screamed out at him to just fall onto his lover and take what he was offering, but he wanted to stretch this out. He needed to make this good for his omega. "The only pressure I'm feeling is pressure to hold back."

"Mmm." Sam narrowed his eyes. Logan moved forward without conscious thought, like Sam was somehow pulling him forward. "I'm going to go out on a limb and tell you to maybe hold back a little less."

Logan obliged. He climbed into the bed and up on top of Sam, straddling his narrow hips. "I can do that." He bent down and claimed Sam's lips in another kiss, pinning his arms down with his hands and grinding his hips down.

Sam responded with a moan and bucked his hips up to meet Logan's. He struggled a little against Logan's hold, but his struggles were more of a token than anything else. If Sam had wanted to get loose, he would have. It seemed to be more of an excuse to try to rub as much of his skin against Logan's as possible. He pulled back for air and craned his head, exposing that long and sexy neck of his.

Logan licked, nibbled, and sucked his way down that perfect throat. Sam's skin tasted better than any dish that Kaylee could whip up in that kitchen next door. He tasted like salt, and a bit like citrus. Logan couldn't stop tasting him. He nibbled and sucked his way from his neck down to his chest and his abs. He moved his hands down to Sam's thighs, stroking the tops and then the outside before moving to the inner thighs.

Sam's legs fell open as soon as Logan's fingers found the strong muscles of his inner thighs. Logan hissed out a curse and paused, letting himself enjoy the heat rising from his lover. Then he reached for the lube.

He stretched Sam out slowly. He wanted to bury himself deep inside, but he knew that he had to take his time. He didn't want to hurt Sam. His omega might not be some delicate little flower, but he wasn't someone who could be treated callously either. Sam should be cherished, and treated like he was the special and beautiful and amazing creature that he was.

Sam devolved into a sweaty, panting mess, and Logan decided that enough was enough. He rolled the condom onto himself, sacked himself up, and worked his way into Sam's hot, writhing body with short, shallow thrusts.

This was heaven. Logan had thought that he'd had good sex before, but none of his previous lovers compared to this. The crushing heat of Sam's body, the scent of his skin, the sound of his shallow pants—everything combined to convince Logan that this was paradise. Then Sam's eyes flew open, and he whispered, "Move."

Logan hadn't put much stock in true mates before, but right now he'd be willing to buy in. Sex had never been like this. He moaned out loud as he snapped his hips back and thrust back into Sam's body, setting up a pace that had Sam holding on for dear life. Sam definitely didn't seem to be complaining, though. He bucked his hips to meet Logan, thrust for thrust, and muffled his cries of pleasure in his arm.

Logan had no idea how much time had passed, but he could feel his orgasm threatening. He reached a hand down in between them to tug on Sam's hard cock, and he came hard and hot into Logan's fist. Once Sam came, Logan could let himself finish, and he spilled into the condom with a loud cry. He collapsed down onto his lover, exhausted, and lay there for a moment. When he let himself up, he dragged himself into the bathroom and disposed of the condom. He got a cloth to clean Sam up with and crawled into bed beside his lover.

He knew that he should pull out his phone and set an alarm. He shouldn't stay the whole night. He should stay for a while, sure, but then he should take off. He should go home, shower, and change his clothes. He needed to be sharp, in case Utkin showed up at the restaurant.

There was no way that he was going to leave the warm, solid comfort of his mate's arms. Not tonight. Maybe the apartment wasn't a two-story house with a white picket fence around it. In the morning, that would matter. In the morning, it would absolutely matter that he would have to try to find a way to avoid Silas' wrath. None of that mattered right now.

Sam pillowed his head on Logan's chest, and they fell asleep together in a contented little pile. It was about as happy as Logan had been since he'd gotten out of college.

Siena woke them the next morning with a little whimper. "Poor thing," Sam said, getting up. "She probably wants water, or to go outside or something."

Logan smiled over at him. "You're going to have to keep carrying her up and down the stairs every time she wants to go out until that leg is healed. No fun."

"Nah." Sam shook his head and laughed. "It's not a big deal. She weighs less than a keg, and she's worth it. Besides, most of the time I'm downstairs anyway." He headed downstairs with the dog nestled in his arms like an oversized baby.

Sam returned, without the dog. "She's having breakfast and getting scratches from Silas." He stripped and grabbed his bathrobe. "Do you want the first shower?"

Logan pulled the covers up to his chin. "Silas is home already?"

Sam tossed the bathrobe at him. "Well, it's his house and Kaylee needed to be at the restaurant, so yeah. He's allowed."

Logan scrambled for the shower, grateful that he couldn't see Silas from the hallway. He washed quickly and headed back to Sam's room, where he found his own dress pants laid out with the black shirt from Sam's uniform. It wouldn't be a perfect fit, but it was better than nothing.

He dressed and checked his phone. No new messages, nothing to save him from what was going to come. He could hide in the room until Sam got out of the shower, but that would be cowardly of him.

He walked out into the living room, where he found Silas waiting with a nasty smirk on his handsome face. "I was hoping I wouldn't find you here, but you know. Hope and a nickel won't buy you crap."

Logan pressed his lips together and counted to five. "Sam seems to be pretty happy with it."

Silas gave Siena a final pat on the head. "The kid has low standards."

"They're his standards to have, whether high or low, don't you think?" Logan stepped forward, but kept his hands down. "I don't see why it's any different for you to have a thing going with Kaylee and me to have a thing going with Sam."

"The difference is in my intentions." Silas stood up, reminding Logan about his sheer size. "I don't have any hangups about a long-term thing with her, for one thing. I don't have any problem doing the right thing by her if she gets pregnant, even though we're trying to not do that at this point. We're not talking forever at this point, but it's not something that gives me hives to think about.

"You, on the other hand, you'd chew your right arm off before you ever thought about staying with my brother for the rest of his life, wouldn't you? You sure as hell wouldn't stand by him if you got him pregnant, even though it's a lot harder to prevent in him than it is in Kaylee." Silas tilted his head to the side and stepped even closer, close enough that Logan could smell Kaylee's shampoo on him.

Logan narrowed his eyes. "You know an awful lot about my intentions for someone who's never had a full conversation with me."

"I know your kind. Driving that fancy car of yours, letting your boss talk to my brother however he wants, because that Utkin fellow can do something for you and my brother's just a hot piece of tail."

Logan snarled at Silas, only restraining himself from getting physical at the last minute. "No. Don't you ever talk about Sam like that."

"Then don't treat him like that!" Silas' eyes blazed.

"He's a grown man, Silas. If he wants to have a casual relationship, he can do that. He's an adult."

"And I'm still his brother. I'm the one who's going to have to take care of him when you go slinking back off to Connecticut with your tail between your legs. Which, let's be real, can't happen soon enough."

Sam appeared in the doorway. "All right, guys. Put 'em away and let's grab some breakfast. There's no reason to argue before coffee."

Logan and Silas pulled apart, glaring daggers at one another.

  Chapter Seven

Silas wasn't thrilled when Sam decided to sleep with Logan, but Sam hadn't expected him to be. Sam had heard Logan making it abundantly clear that he didn't intend for them to be anything more than casual, which Sam had insisted on in the first place. Sam got to make those decisions for himself, even though he knew that his brother's heart was in the right place with his paternalism.

He also knew that Silas wasn't wrong about Logan's intentions. He might smell good, and he might act sweet when they were alone together. Logan's behavior around Siena, right from the very start, showed that he was actually a pretty good guy. Silas had hit the nail on the head, though, when he'd called out Logan's interest (or lack thereof) in being there for Sam if things hit the fan. It was Utkin, not Sam, who could do something for Logan, and Utkin who he listened to as a result.

Sam would have to look out for himself to make sure that all of his needs were met. He couldn't let himself get too attached, because that would end in disaster. At the same time, he was an omega. He had needs that Silas wasn't ever going to fully understand. He would have to guard his heart from Logan while enjoying his physical comfort while it lasted. At least he had Siena to give him that affection and companionship that he couldn't get from Logan.

Siena recovered slowly but steadily. As the two weeks after her rescue passed, her stitches dissolved and she seemed to recover from the pain of her injuries. She got to know her new home well, and she got used to the rhythms of their new life. She didn't like the cone, and she didn't like the cast. She hated to be alone, and if Sam went to go take a shower, she would reach into his laundry hamper and pull out a dirty tee shirt to cuddle.

That kind of devotion was new to him. Silas was devoted to him, sure. He had no doubts about that. Silas' love was a different kind of love, though. It was a kind of love where Sam had been the dependent one for most of their lives. Silas was an authority figure, even if Sam usually pretended that he wasn't. With Siena, Sam got to be the authority, the one who nurtured, and he found he liked it.

That wasn't to say that he was the only person who Siena liked. She responded well to Kaylee and to Silas, and to Phil. She liked Logan a lot and gave him foul doggy kisses every time she saw him, which made Logan pretend to be disgusted and made Sam laugh out loud. If Logan were really disgusted by the dog's slobbery affection, he'd avoid her, but he kept coming back for more.

Sam and Logan took what moments they could to continue their relationship, such as it was. Silas went out at night at least twice a week, apart from the time he spent with Kaylee, and that gave Sam and Logan the apartment to themselves fairly frequently. If Logan was curious as to where his nemesis was going, he didn't ask. That was good, because Sam wouldn't have told him.

Nothing connected to the bar itself was illegal. Silas' underground cage fights? They were just the ammunition that Logan and Utkin would need to get Joe's shut down. They might not be connected directly to the bar itself, but his participation would mean that they'd lose their liquor license in a heartbeat.

Sam and Logan did get to go out on that date. Silas complained for hours, but agreed to hang out with Siena while Sam took Logan out on his bike. Logan had apparently never been out on a motorcycle of any kind, and he showed up in khakis, but he showed up without complaining and put his helmet on with good grace. Once they were ready to go, Sam drove him out to Georgetown.

Sam had been riding for most of his life, but he rarely rode with a passenger. He'd definitely never rode with a passenger who was also his sexual partner. For a minute, as he pulled out onto the street in front of Logan's house, he doubted that he could do this. He wanted too much. Muscle memory kicked in, though, and he made the adjustments and made it work.

The ride was beautiful. They'd missed the peak of leaf season, but there was still plenty of color on the trees for Sam's viewing pleasure. Logan's presence at his back was distracting, but he also acted as a kind of space heater. It made the hour long ride out to historic Georgetown even more pleasant.

Logan was grinning like a maniac when they pulled into the parking lot at the Perkins Island Light. He stretched his legs and turned to Sam. "Okay, I have to admit that I can see the appeal now. Hot damn, that was fun."

  Sam grinned. "Right?"

They walked around the lighthouse for a while and enjoyed the view. Then they hit a little diner before heading back toward Portland. The diner made Logan a little pensive. "My mom worked in a place like this," he said, after the waitress dropped off their dinners.

"Seriously?" Sam looked around. "As what, a bookkeeper?"

Logan blushed and snorted. "No. She owned it. She owned the diner, inherited it from her dad. My dad worked in a factory nearby."

Sam paused. None of that fit with the image that Logan liked to put out there. "Huh," he said.

"It was a struggle, you know? My dad lost his job, and he turned to gambling because he was desperate. It's not like the manufacturing jobs were coming back to Connecticut, right? So he tried to gamble and win some money, but that wasn't really a viable option, and we lost the house. And the diner. My mom had to wait tables at the place she'd owned." Logan bit the inside of his cheek and looked away, cheeks flushed. "I swore I wasn't going back to that, you know?"

"I'd imagine." Sam shuddered. "That must have been awful for her. And for you."

Logan gave him a quick little smile. "I'm okay with it now, you know? I mean, not okay okay, but I'm alive and stuff. I'll survive. But when I got that scholarship to UConn, I promised myself I was getting out no matter what. I wasn't going to be trapped like she was."

Sam understood why he was hearing this now. He wasn't privileged. He was being warned. Logan might care for him, and his alpha hormones might draw him toward Sam. He'd promised himself that he'd pull himself up into the wealthy class no matter what it took, and a mate like Sam didn't fit into that goal.

Sam got that. He wasn't bitter. Logan had suffered as he watched his parents go through all of that. Sure, it hurt a little, but he'd get over it. "Are you ready to head back?"

"Just as soon as we're done here." Logan indicated his burger. "Sometimes I miss normal food, you know?"

They finished up their meals and headed back into Portland. Logan invited Sam up into his apartment, and while Sam felt kind of hesitant, he said yes. Logan's apartment was nondescript, and he seemed to see Sam's confusion. "It's not like I'm staying in this place," he said with a shrug. "I took the place temporarily until I found something more long-term, you know? I didn't have a lot of notice before they gave me this assignment." He shook his head and looked around at the bare white walls. "It's not like I spend a lot of time here."

"True. Is this your first day off since you took the job?" Sam glanced out the window.

"Yeah." Logan took his hand. "I'd planned on something different when I came here, but whatever. It'll be worth it if we can make the restaurant a going concern."

  They had some mind-bl
owing sex, but Sam didn't stay the night. He wanted to get back to Siena, and he knew that Logan didn't want to make their relationship (such as it was) obvious to everyone at the trattoria. Instead, he headed back to his apartment and played with his dog.

The next couple of days passed in a blur. Sam was pretty sure he was coming down with something; he was having a hard time getting out of bed in the morning and he had a constant low-grade nausea plaguing his steps. He didn't worry about it too much; he had the constitution of a horse, and he knew that he could fight the cold off if he just took decent care of himself. The nausea didn't bother him at all; he had a cast-iron stomach.

Saturday shaped up to be an okay day at work. They had a few little issues with customers from rival clubs here and there, and Sam had to step in a time or two, but there wasn't anything major. For the most part people knew their limits, spent their time in a positive way, and kept their hands to themselves. Sam, Silas, and the part-time waitresses raked in the tips and kept very busy filling drink orders.
