THAT MAGIC TOUCH
IT WAS NO SURPRISE to Wes Proctor when the annual bash turned into an orgy. Take a bunch of workaholic witches and warlocks-at-law, add a few dozen rambunctious magical clients, and throw in Halloween, the one night of the year when the entire magical community went a little crazy. There were celebrations all over the city, but the party at Proctor and Partners had a long-standing reputation for devolving into sexual excess after a couple of hours, and the more staid clients and married or sexually reserved employees knew when to call it a night and make way for the main event. Inevitably, someone would cast a lust spell and before you could say “trick or treat…”
He scanned the ballroom again.
She wasn’t here.
Well, of course, she was here. Jane Fairhaven wasn’t the type of woman to back away from a job, especially one she really needed. The idea that she desperately needed this catering job had Wes’ stomach churning in frustration, as did the reminder of how she’d scraped her way up from a difficult childhood. He was dying to give her everything, to make sure that she never had to worry about money ever again, to court and woo and eventually marry the hot little mortal who had him tied up in knots.
Jane was his sister’s best friend, and for the three years he’d known her, he’d been completely lost. There wasn’t another woman who could bring his brain and his glib tongue to a stuttering halt just by entering the room. She thought of herself as plain, mousy, but Wes knew otherwise. Her brown hair shone with golden highlights and her clear blue eyes were speckled with green. She had the most delicate features, almost elfin. Jane was so cute that men always underestimated her sharp mind, but Wes scoffed at that. He never won an argument with her, ever. If she’d had any legal training, he would have hired her on the spot.
Instead, Jane’s first love was the kitchen, and there she concocted recipes designed to bring a man to his knees. As if Wes needed any encouragement. Just one swish of her perfectly rounded little ass had him drooling, and the full curves of the breasts she hid under neatly tailored blouses made him weak all over.
Wes glanced around again, worried. The lust was thick in the air now, along with plenty of magic. Nearby, two intrepid leprechauns had stripped a tall, stacked witch, who giggled as they laid her on a table. One poured champagne over her while the other eagerly licked it off her breasts. On the other side of the room, Heydrich, one of the warlock partners, was already naked, his muscled body gleaming as he pounded into a curvy little nymph from behind with his usual precision. Her cries of pleasure were muffled by the fat Minotaur cock she was eagerly attempting to swallow while a mixed-species group looked on.
Dammit.
He’d planned for Jane to be gone by now – she would come in, dazzle potential new clients with her mouthwatering culinary treats, and leave well before the inevitable sexual bacchanal started. Instead, thirty minutes in, Zana, the gypsy in accounting, had set off a lust cherry bomb, and that was that. There was a flurry toward the exits as the usual crowd made a hasty departure, and then the real party got started. Wes used to love this – the crazed sexual energy, the magic, the drunken carousing. The magical community simply didn’t have the same hang-ups about sex that humans did.
Since meeting Jane, all of that had changed. Wes only wanted her, and no one else appealed. After she’d finally dumped that no-good-fucker-fiancé of hers and Wes had persuaded himself not to turn the cheating bastard into an enema bag, Wes had managed to coax Jane into a real date – a great dinner at the best restaurant in town, a carriage ride through Central Park, and a kiss at the front door. It had taken every ounce of restraint not to take that almost-but-not-quite-chaste kiss to the next level, but Wes had managed it and bid her goodnight, drunk on her sweet vanilla scent and the soft feel of her lips against his.
Then his sister had come out as a witch to her best friend.
Disaster.
Convincing Jane to cater the party at double her normal rate was his way of apologizing for his sister Esme just blurting it out there, and a way of slowly easing her into acceptance of the world that existed alongside her own. Wes knew she was freaked out. She was barely speaking to Esme, which had her sister desperate and upset. But Jane was well and truly spooked, Wes saw it for himself in the way she jumped during their one planning meeting – every move he made had her jerking away from him.
He hated that.
Wes was determined to fix things between them if it was the last thing he ever did.
Jane was probably hiding somewhere, Wes noted, depressed. He spared a sour look for Zana, who was naked and riding a werewolf Wes didn’t recognize like a bronco at the rodeo. He knew he’d become a one-woman man when the sight of her enormous tits jiggling with each thrust inspired nothing but a generic appreciation of the female form.
The ballroom was getting out of control, and Wes knew he had to find Jane. He hurried for the kitchen off the main room, not surprised that the sexual overload had spread here. Several pixies and the very mortal wait staff were having fun with food, and more couples and groups were finding their way here as they ran out of surfaces in the ballroom.
Wes’ eyes narrowed. Across the room was a walk-in fridge with a high, round, glass window.
Bingo.
OH GOD, I’M TRAPPED, thought Jane, wishing she were tall enough to peek out the fridge window, then realizing that she was probably better off as the sounds of rough sex reached her ears, muffled by the thick metal door. She was hardly a virgin, but the freak show outside was so not her scene. All those wings and fangs and appendages. As soon as the crazed gypsy had tossed what looked like a glitter bomb into the center of the room and pulled off her dress like a stripper on speed, Jane had retreated into the kitchen, and then further, into the fridge. Now, she could go no further, stuck in this cold, dark space until all the crazed magical sex freaks finished, so to speak. She didn’t dare turn on a light.
“This is all Wes Proctor’s fault,” she grumbled.
Wes Proctor, her possibly ex-BFF’s big brother.
Wes, with the golden hair, impossibly gorgeous face, and eyes like the sky.
Wes, whose irreverent good humor teased her out of her depression over her break-up
, who never talked down to her despite the difference in their social statuses, who had the most beautiful, strong hands she’d ever seen.
And a body to match, I’ll bet.
Wes, who was a warlock.
WARLOCK.
It didn’t matter that the man kissed like a dream or that his broad, towering frame made her feel tiny and delicate, or that the way he looked at her had butterflies doing the tango in her stomach. He and Esme had lied about their…species…for Pete’s sake. It wasn’t natural. It was actually quite supernatural, and Jane was having a hard time dealing with it, to say the least.
The existence of a real live magical world was one more obstacle on Jane’s list. She’d pulled herself up from nothing, and had come a long way from the trailer park and her alcoholic mother, putting herself through night school and culinary school and finally this past year taking the plunge to open up her own catering business. Now she’d have to decide whether or not to take on magical clients – the whole idea freaked her own, but it felt wrong to discriminate. Jane thought about her life just a few short months ago, when she was getting the business off the ground and didn’t have to worry about this kind of nonsense. Esme had been nothing but enthusiastic, introducing her to all her high society friends.
The thought of Esme set off a pang in Jane’s heart. She was pissed at her best friend for lying to her, but knew it would only be a matter of time until she picked up the phone. She had met Esme while teaching a knife skills class, and though the pretty socialite was useless when it came to filleting a trout, she and Jane had hit it off immediately. They had been inseparable ever since. And with Esme came Wes.
Oh, Wes.
Of course, Jane had met Wes while she was still engaged to That Cheating Bastard, and so they could only be casual friends. A three-year engagement had culminated in Jane walking in on her CPA fiancé having his meager assets sucked by a pretty little blonde secretary in their bedroom. Jane had calmly packed a suitcase, yanked off her engagement ring, and walked out, ignoring his protests. The last six months had been a struggle, and proud Jane had refused financial help from the generous Proctor siblings, instead living in a crappy studio apartment and pouring every last dime into her business. Nothing but work and the determination that next time, she’d find someone who wouldn’t look down his nose at her, someone on her level who knew what it was like to struggle. It had taken some time to realize how badly her ex had treated her, how he made her feel like she was lucky to have him, and Jane told herself that she would never allow that to happen again.
But Wes Proctor had asked her out.
And Jane couldn’t resist.
Because Wes was the lottery, Prince Charming, and every aphrodisiac known to woman-kind rolled into one. She knew he was way out of her league, but when he asked her out, Jane agreed, and the night was…pure magic, as it were. He’d left her melting into a puddle of sexually frustrated Jane on the doorstep after one slow, searing kiss, and once he’d gone, Jane had wasted no time rushing to find her vibrator. Her imagination gave their evening together a very different ending, and Jane nearly wore the thick toy out picturing Wes using his hands and mouth and cock to please her again and again.
Esme’s little announcement last week had ruined all of that. It was too late to back out of catering the Proctor Halloween bash, but now Jane had to wrap her head around the idea that some of her new potential clients might not even be human. She didn’t want to admit it, but it was actually kind of fascinating – though her last consultation with Wes had been painfully awkward, Jane had learned an epic amount about the eating habits of various species. It opened up a whole new world of foodie possibilities, and that was Jane’s major weakness.
The door handle jiggled and Jane tensed, grabbing the nearest object with a handle – a heavy frying pan out of one of the storage boxes under the produce shelves. The firm worked long hours, so Wes had built a professional kitchen and kept a small chef on staff to keep his team well fed. It was a chef’s dream. Jane’s fingers tightened on the handle as the door eased open, letting in a sliver of light and the sounds of sex and laughter from the rooms outside.
I am not going to be a sexual plaything for some magical freak!
A hulking figure stepped inside, and Jane didn’t hesitate, she brought the frying pan up, and –
WHOOSH!
An unseen force yanked it from her hands and sent the heavy metal flying to clatter against the subzero.
Jane panicked and launched herself at the figure, scratching and kicking and –
“Jane! It’s me!”
Strong arms banded around her, lifting her as she struggled. Suddenly, a ball of light appeared out of nowhere, illuminating Wes – handsome, disheveled, and concerned. Jane froze. The ball of light bounced around the room, investigating every nook and corner as Wes let her slide down his body.
Down every muscled inch.
When her feet hit the ground, Jane took a wobbly, wary step back.
“Hey, it’s okay,” said Wes, “It’s just me, not some lust-crazed swamp monster or vamp.”
Jane’s brow furrowed, and Wes held up his wrist to display a silver band, the ends twined together in a lover’s knot.
“Handy little accessory I picked up from a siren my sister went to finishing school with. It nulls the effect of any magical lure. Thought it might come in handy tonight.”
“What a disappointment to all those…what are they? Nymphs?”
“Some of them. Jealous?”
Wes grinned, and Jane scowled at him.
“How come I’m not tearing off my clothes and begging for all sorts of X-rated gymnastics?”
“Because I’m not that lucky.”
Wes held up his hands as Jane’s face became murderous.
“Kidding. You were smart enough to vamoose the minute Zana threw her lust bomb. The air filtration in here is different, so you didn’t breathe it in.”
“So I really am trapped?”
“For a few more hours, sorry. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you company and make sure you don’t have any unwanted visitors.”
“Oh, great.”
Jane slid down the door and leaned against a shelving unit overflowing with leafy goodness.
“Had I known I was going to spend all night in a fridge, I would have dressed for the occasion.”
Wes’ eyes slid over her neat white blouse and black mini-skirt, lingering on the hint of lace at the tops of her thigh highs before following them down to her sensible shoes. Jane felt a curl of heat that had absolutely nothing to do with the temperature in the room. Wes rubbed his hands.
“I can warm you up, if you don’t mind a little magic…”
“No! I’d rather be cold.”
Wes frowned.
“It’s not that big a deal.”
“Not to you, it’s not!”
Jane tugged her skirt down and curled up as best she could as Wes made a sound of pure male frustration. He shrugged off his jacket and tucked it around her shoulders, his raised eyebrow daring her to protest. With a sniff of gratitude, Jane snuggled into the fabric, trying to ignore how it smelled of Wes and clean soap and linen.
Wes sat down across from her, leaning against another shelving unit.
“I would conjure up a deck of cards, but I’m afraid that might offend your delicate sensibilities.”
Jane scowled at him.
“You make fun, but is it so bad to just want my life to be somewhat normal?”
When normal is the one thing you can’t give me.
The thought was depressing. Life without Wes and Esme would be…bland.
“Normal gets old pretty fast.”
“I don’t think you’d know normal if it bit you in the ass,” scoffed Jane.
“You’re breaking Esme’s heart, you know,” said Wes quietly, and Jane felt lower than scum.
“I just need a little time to wrap my head around all of this,” she said.
“That’s what I told her. But call he
r, soon. She misses you.”
Jane nodded, feeling tears gather.
“Hey, no crying,” said Wes anxiously, and Jane couldn’t help a watery chuckle at his distress, dabbing her eyes on his jacket.
“I think once you get to know the other side of this town, you’ll find we’re really not all that different. Everybody loved the food, by the way. I gave away all of your cards and at least three people suggested that you take over for the staff chef.”
Jane was shocked, and touched, but hell no.
“That’s not a good idea.”’
“That’s what I said. I won’t get anything done if my girlfriend is working in the building.”
“Girlfriend!” spluttered Jane.
“Well, after a few more dates, of course.”
Jane scrambled to her feet, letting the jacket drop. Wes looked unconcerned.
“We’re not going on any more dates!” said Jane.
“Why not?”
“Because you’re you, and I’m me.”
And because Wes was not just gorgeous, not just funny and smart, not just rich beyond reason, but now he had the equivalent of freaking superpowers. Jane just wanted someone on her level.
Which Wes was most certainly not.
Not in any way.
Suddenly, Jane couldn’t take it anymore. One more minute in the dark with Wes Proctor and, magical freak or no, she was going to jump him. He didn’t need a lust spell to get her hot, he managed it without trying with his wicked blue eyes, the confidence he wore like a second skin, and those hands she wanted all over her body. This was torture.
Jane jumped to her feet and reached for the door handle.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” said Wes, not moving a muscle.
“Oh, really?” sneered Jane.
“The magic has probably dissipated somewhat, so if you hold your breath, you might make it to the entrance, but at least check to make sure the coast is clear.”
Jane hesitated and then dragged a stool from the corner. Awkwardly, she hopped up on her knees to reach the small, round window.
