Lucy bursts out, “Humph and humph again! Are you as crazy as that General is? They is after William, can you not see that?”

Savannah turns her back on Lucy and says, “Let’s go get him out of the passage.” As she climbs the stairs, she continues speaking. “He must be in a lot of pain and hungry. We need to get him back into bed.”

Lucy stops dead in her tracks and stares after Savannah. “Did you hear anything I just said, child?” she asks. Savannah makes no answer but keeps taking the stairs one at a time, looking straight ahead.

“Oh Lord, preserve us!” Lucy finally mumbles, and follows Savannah upstairs. They go over to the wall and open the panel to the room. They find William lying on the floor and weak. Savannah says, “Oh no! He has gone ill! Give me a hand, Lucy!.”

Savannah and Lucy move their dangerous burden into the bedroom where they lay him on the bed to rest. William has a fever and is unable to move. Savannah tells Lucy “

“We’ve got to get his fever down! Oh Lucy, please help me!” Lucy silently goes to get rags and a big washbasin while Savannah undresses William. He seems burning up with fever. William starts to mutter something under his breath, but they cannot understand him. He seems to be mumbling about orders and hurrying, and he seems to be shouting the word, “father.” Finally he cries like a baby and pitifully begs to be forgiven.

Savannah looks at Lucy and says, “He is trying to say something but I can’t make sense of it..”

“No, he is just ravin’,” says Lucy. “He ain’t makin’ no sense.” Lucy does not want to know, and thinks it better if Savannah doesn’t either.

At one point, William looks up at Savannah and seems to pass out. Savannah sponges him down with the cold water, hoping it will bring down the fever. After an hour or so, it does, and Savannah realizes that this young man is strong. She is constantly surprised at how well he mends.

Lucy comes to the door, and Savannah looks up, relieved.

“He will rest for now. I think he’ll be fine in the morning..” As they clean up the room, Savannah asks, “Have the children had their supper?”

“Yes, a course, don’t worry about that!” says Lucy. “Do you want a plate, too?” Savannah replies “No, I will sit here in William’s room to watch over him tonight.”

Lucy looks at Savannah and says, “Maybe that ain’t such a good idea, Miss. Maybe I should stay here and watch over him.”

Savannah looks at Lucy and says, “Don’t worry about me! I’ll just sleep in the chair! I’ll be fine! I’m not tired!”

Lucy shakes her head and says, “Well, that ain’t exactly what I was worried about!” and leaves.

After Lucy leaves, Savannah settles herself at the side of the bed and gazes at poor William sleeping. She begins to wonder what he was trying to say before he fainted. After a while, she walks to the window, looks up at the moon and admires how brightly it is shining tonight. Then she turns to look at William lying there in the bed. Will he ever fully recover? What will happen to all of them? She knows she cannot send him out to be shot by those rebel dogs.

Rebel dogs! How could she think such a thing? They are her people, southern people, Confederates! Aren’t they? But as she gazes at William she is not sure anymore. Nothing is the same anymore. Nothing.

Savannah gets up from the table and walks over to William’s bedside. She checks his head to see if the fever has gone down. He seems to be fine at this moment. Savannah then walks back over to the window.

William wakes up from his sleep, looks over at Savannah, and sees the moonlight shining on her hair. Through her nightdress William takes notice of her heavenly figure though her dress, of the way the moonlight shows her breasts, and of her shining hair that is flowing down her back. He does not say anything but just watches her. She moves closer to the window. He watches the way her body moves gracefully as her hand traces imaginary shapes into the frost on the window.

Savannah, not knowing William is watching, turns to sit back down in the chair. William mumbles, “You’re beautiful!”

Savannah, more pleased than she cares to show, answers, “Oh, so you are awake!”

William says, “Yes, I just woke up and noticed your beauty.”

Savannah tries to cover herself up but cannot seem to get herself together. William tells her that it is not necessary for her to cover her beauty. Savannah stops and touches her breast shyly and says to William, “You should be resting now and not have your mind on these things.”

“Yes, but I just cannot seem to get you out of my mind,” William tells her.

Savannah looks at William and says, “I know the feeling,” in a soft voice.

William says “I could not hear you, what did you say?”

Savannah replies nothing. She puts her robe on and walks over to William’s bedside, sitting down next to him and tells him, “You was ravin’ somethin’ terrible in your fever!”

  “Was I?”

She tells him about the soldiers and about how she and Lucy found him and had to wash him down with the cold water so the fever would break.

She then goes over to the table for a little soup she had prepared for him.

  “You must be starving!”

William tells her, “Yes, I am hungry!” and tries to sit up. Savannah helps William to sit up and then helps him eat some soup. After William eats all his soup he asks, “Can you please help me to the bathroom?”

Savannah giggles. “You mean the water closet, Yankee boy?”

Savannah then helps him to his feet and begins to walk him to the water closet. As William leans on Savannah for help, he notices the smell of her hair, how sweet it is. He also realizes how soft her skin is. It reminds him of the finest silk. He notices how beautiful her eyes are. Savannah notices William looking at her. She asks what is wrong. William smiles and replies, “Nothing! Just admiring you, that’s all!”

Savannah replies with a teasing voice, “Stop that, you rogue Yankee!” and William laughs.

“Here we are here at the bathroom,” she says with glee.

William maneuvers into the bathroom. Savannah stands near the door waiting and thinking about how William was looking at her. She wonders how long he was watching her before, while she was looking out the window. Savannah starts to feel her heart race a little and her body gets warm when she hears William say he is ready to go back to the room.

As Savannah helps William slowly back into bed, she loses her footing from under her! They fall down with William somehow winding up on top of Savannah. Now they are in a precarious position on the floor. William is slightly erect from all the thoughts he has been having about Savannah. She feels this next to her body and tries to move, but he seems to be too heavy for her at this moment in time. She is taken off guard. Savannah then says “You need to help me!” She means he needs to climb off her so she can help him back into bed. “What would you like me to help you do, Savannah?” asks William. Savannah catches her breath. “You shameless Yankee! Get off me!” William looks at Savannah and says, “Why, you don’t like being this close to me?”

Savannah, not knowing what to say, tries to push William off her. Seeing she is uncomfortable, he rolls off her and onto the floor. Savannah gets up off the floor and bends down, helping him up. William puts his arm around her neck and helps her to help him. Savannah finally gets him back into his bed and covers him with the blanket.

Trying to recover her dignity, Savannah turns and says, “Well, I see you are quite recovered, so I will retire to my own bed for some rest.”

As she goes to blow out the candle next to his bed, William grabs her arm gently, and says, “That is not an answer to my question.”

Savannah looks down at William with dark eyes and says, “It is not that I do not like to be near you, but I just cannot get too used to you being here. You will be well soon, and then you will go back to your hateful war again.”

William looks up at Savannah and says, “Oh Savannah! I understand now! Will I see you come t
omorrow?”

Savannah says, “It may be! I have many things to do in the morning. You get some rest for now.” Savannah leaves.

William is lying in bed looking up at the ceiling and contemplates what Savannah has said. William knows she is right, but cannot help remembering what it felt like to be close to her as they were. The smell of her hair, the softness of her skin, and the way her lips looked up close. He closes his eyes and tries to sleep, but all he dreams about is Savannah.

  Chapter 3

Savannah is in her room thinking about William and about how it felt to have him on top of her. She cannot get her mind off his muscular chest and strong arms. As she falls asleep, she starts to have a wonderful dream about how it would be if there was no war and he was her husband. They had just gotten married and it was their first night together alone. She dreams about him holding her in his arms and gently kissing her lips, and undressing her very slowly as he begins to lie her down on the bed. He would slowly caress her as they kissed.

As he continues to undress her, she realized that with every touch of his hand she would become more wet and excited. She would begin to undress him and start to kiss him slowly around his neck and moving down to his chest. As his hand slowly runs up her thigh, it just brushes up against her heavenly spot. She also goes on to think how it would be to feel him nibble on her neck in the right spot, as he touches her down in her heavenly spot. She moans in enjoyment and grab his back with her nails, tracing them down to his buttocks in excitement and grabbing him fully to her. She moans with intensity and sensuality.

He would begin to thrust forward into her with such gentleness, the pleasure she felt would become intense to them both. She could see his face as they continue. She was amazed how wonderful it felt to have him this close to her, finally in her. It was like a dream she thought could never become real. The thrusting from him becomes more intense. As he starts to thrust a little faster, she starts to dig her nails into his back at the intensity of the lovemaking. She starts to moan louder and louder and he picks her up off the bed with himself still inside her and holds her against the wall of the bedroom as he continues his lovemaking. Savannah starts to scream in excitement.

Back in the house in the other room William can hear Savannah moaning and screaming. He becomes worried. He pulls himself up out of bed by holding on the edge of the table and begins to walk out of the room and down the hall to Savannah’s room. He pushes the door open slightly to see if she is ok and to his surprise, he hears her say “Oh! William!” and sees her caressing herself with intensity. He wonders if she could be really dreaming about him in such a way, and he listens a little more as she once again moans and says his name. He is surprised from what he hears and sees. He walks into the room and shuts the door. William walks over to the bed while holding himself up against the wall so he does not fall and wake Savannah.

William cannot help himself but to try to touch Savannah while she is having this dream. Therefore, he carefully takes off Savannah’s blanket and notices how wet the bed is from Savannah’s juices. He tries to brace himself so as not to wake Savannah out of her dream. He then tries to touch her nipple very carefully and notices her reaction to his touch. He thinks to himself, I should just go back to my room before Savannah wakes up from her dream and catches me touching her breast! But he still cannot help himself and starts to touch her thigh.

He gently touches the thigh and Savannah, still dreaming, moans with great pleasure. He begins to withdraw his hand and realizes this is not right; I must go back to bed and just let her be. He goes to stand up from the bed to try to leave but stumbles to the floor. He makes a loud thud as he falls, which wakes Savannah out of her dream. Soaking wet from head to toe and panting heavily, she sits up in her bed and looks around to see where that noise came from. She glances over at the floor and sees William lying on it. She gets up out of bed and is mad at him for coming into her room but goes over to help him up anyway. She leans down and asks him “What are you doing here?” He looks up at her as she continues to help him to his feet and says, “I heard you moaning and screaming.”

“I thought you were in trouble, so I managed to get myself out of bed to try to come help you.” Savannah is horrified because she remembers what she was dreaming. She helps him to sit on the edge of her bed. Savannah looks at William and says, “What is it you exactly heard and how long have you been in here?” He looks at her and lies. “Not long! I noticed you were just dreaming and came closer to make sure it wasn’t a nightmare. When I realized it wasn’t, I was going to leave and go back to bed. That’s when I fell and you woke up.”

Embarrassed, Savannah looks at the table and says, “What is it you heard?” William says, “I heard you moaning with great pleasure.” Savannah’s face turns red. William goes on to say, “I also heard you say my name more than once.” Savannah is now so embarrassed she does not know what to say. She sits on the other side of the bed and is quiet. William says, “I am not trying to make you uncomfortable. I am sorry if I am.”

Savannah does not know what to say now, so she says to him, “Can we talk about this in the morning?” He looks at her and sees that she is shaken up by this whole thing and says to her, “Yes, we can talk about it in the morning, but I think I will need your help to get back to my room now.”

Savannah gets her robe on and starts to help him back to his room. As they begin to go back to his room, Savannah says to him. “No, I don’t think this can wait till morning. I will be honest with you.”

“William, ever since you came here, I cannot stop thinking about you and about my feelings. I am so confused right now that I do not know how to react towards you anymore. I know that you will be getting better soon and must leave, but there is a part of me that wants you to stay here with me! I know this is wrong.”

William tells Savannah, “I’ve been having these feelings about you also, and do not know what to do! If only there was a way that we could work something out so we could be together!” Savannah thinks for a few and does not know what to say.

William says, “I could just stay here until the war is over and then we could be together.”

Savannah tells William, “That sounds right nice, but the southern soldiers will be back to search again. They must not find you here.”

William says, “You are right. What I am thinking is that I have to leave here as soon as I am well, or you will be in danger for my sake. If they catch me here, they will kill me, and who knows what they would do to you for hiding me here. Is there any other ideas that you may have?”

Savannah turns to William and, to his surprise, starts to cry softly. Endearingly, she says she is all out of ideas right now. She needs to go rest. William goes to reach for her, but then sits back and lets Savannah go. He knows she needs time.

William sits alone in his room thinking about what they have just said. He looks up at the ceiling and sighs. He says, “There must be a way!” and falls asleep.

Meanwhile Savannah is back in her room crying into her pillow. She starts to think about what they have said. She turns over on her bed and says, “There must be a way! We will figure it out, but not tonight. I will just get some rest and figure it out tomorrow.” Savannah falls asleep.

Back in William’s room, he is sleeping restlessly, tossing and turning. He begins to dream. They are on the farm and he is working the fields. There is no war, and he and Savannah are married. They are living happily together.

He has just finished his chores for the day and is on the way back to the house for supper. Savannah makes a great meal. After they finish eating, he goes to take a bath. Savannah draws his bath water and starts to wash William. As he relaxes in the tub, Savannah starts by taking the sponge and dipping it in the water with the soap and softly runs it down William’s muscular back slowly and gently. Savannah continues to wash William’s back ever so gently, and then again soaks the sponge in the water. Once again she picks it up and now begins to run it down William’s strong che
st.

William lying in the tub has his eyes closed and moans ever so softly to the touch of the sponge. William slowly raises his hand and begins to caress Savannah’s arms as she moves her hands gently up and down his chest to wash him. Savannah is beginning to feel hot and warm from the caressing of William’s hands and slowly moves back up to William’s neck with the sponge. Savannah takes the sponge and dips it back into the water. She once again takes the sponge to run it down his chest and waist.

William then caresses Savannah’s breast, and tells her, “A little lower. She releases the sponge and gently takes his muscle into her hand. She begins to slowly stroke it and says to William, “Is this good enough? William moans and says, “Yes that is fine.” Then he starts to kiss her on the neck as she starts to stroke his muscle a little faster. William starts to moan a little louder and says, “Yes, that is the right spot,” as he then takes his hand and begins to gentle stroke her. Savannah begins to moan as William continues to stroke her as she is stroking him in the same motion. They both begin to moan. William grabs Savannah and pulls her into the bath with him.

He begins to kiss her intensely and they slowly caress one another. William looks at Savannah and says, “Would you like to move this into the bedroom of the house?” Savannah smiles, while nodding her head yes. William stands up in the tub, picks up her in his arms and goes up to the bedroom in the house, and gently lays Savannah on the bed. William begins to undress her. Savannah helps to get out of her clothes. After William has undressed Savannah, he lies on top of her gently and begins to kiss her again. Now, while William is dreaming this, Savannah awakes to hear William moaning in his sleep.

She says to herself that she should check on him to make sure he is ok. Savannah gets out of bed and forgets to put her robe on as she leaves the room. She walks to the end of the hall where William’s room is. She opens the door slowly and sees he is tossing and turning a lot. She hears him moan softly once again as she stands in the doorway. She begins to go closer to William’s bed to listen more closely, trying to figure out what William could be dreaming.
