  Chapter 12

  Finally, William and Savannah climax together. William lies down next to Savannah and puts her head upon his chest. He begins to gently caress her hair. Savannah smiles and whispers’ Remember our fist time making love? William replies how could I ever forget. Savannah smiles and says I never want this to end. William replies and neither do I my love. Savannah begins to nod off while lying safely next to William. William lays there and cannot believe what a wonderfully strong women Savannah is. He then begins to worry a bit about what is to come in a few hours and just hopes she is strong enough to follow through and hopes he john and his father are able to do as they have said which is protect her at all costs.

  Meanwhile out side the head soldier nods off not realizing the southern general has began to awake sort of out of his slumber. He is groggy and disarrayed. He calls for his head soldier but the head soldier does not hear him. The southern general gets up from his cot and looks around wondering where his precious Savannah could be. He gets up off the cot and bumps into his desk he sees a cup a tea for him and takes a sip. He then sits back down onto the cot and once again calls for his head soldier but once again, he does not hear him.

  The Southern General is now more up set then when he first awoke and begins to stagger out of his tent. He thinks to him self; lousy soldier does not come when I call and where is Savannah my wife to be? She must be in the house getting ready for our wedding. Maybe I should go and surprise her with my presents before we wed. I think she would like that. Yes, that is what I shall do. The Southern general goes back into his tent, begins to try to awake more, and dresses himself. He looks into the mirror and says Well soon it will be my wedding night and I shall have Savannah as my bride disarrayed and groggy the southern general fastens his belt and stumbles outside once again.

  The Southern General stumbles out side and as he does so the head soldier awakes. He stands up and salutes the General and say Sir you have awakened where are you trying to go? The Southern General says I am off to wed my bride Savannah soldier. The head soldier stands in front of the General and says Sir It is not night fall yet and you’re beautiful bride may not yet be ready. I think you should wait till the sun set and refresh you’re self a bit more.

  The Southern General gets angry and says Out of my way! I am ready for my wedding and my bride to be is ready. The head soldier once again stands in front of the General and says Sir with great respect I implore you to wait till the sun set it will be much more wonderful plus you’re blushing bride to be needs to make a grand entrance for you. Would you wish to take that from her Sir? The Southern General stops and says; maybe you are right soldier I shall wait. The Southern General turns around and stumbles back into his tent. The head soldier says to him self this isn’t good. What will happen next?

  Meanwhile upstairs William and Savannah are fast a sleep until they hear the door open. Savannah sits up and sees it is Lucy to come fetch her. Lucy says Miss you needs to get you’re self ready for this charades. Lucy Savannah says You were to be hiding out in the secret room. Lucy says Miss I am not going to just sit and wait to see what happens. I shall stand with you until the end. Savannah gets up out of bed and says Lucy my dear, dear friend Thank you I know this I can not change you’re mind on and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Lucy smiles and says now about this wedding what shall you wear?

  Savannah smiles and watches Lucy go through her closet. Savannah walks back over to the bed and leans in to kiss William softly. William awakes and looks up at Savannah and says My love why are you not here in bed with me? Savannah says William I need to get ready for this evening and you my love must also go get your self ready and make sure all is in place for this tonight. William says Yes I agree and William gets up and kisses Savannah soft on the lips and says good morning to Lucy as he leaves the room.

  Downstairs William goes over to John whom had fallen a sleep. He pushes softly on his shoulder and says John wake up man. John says is it time. William says almost you fell a sleep. John says yes but only for a minute. William laughs and goes over to wake up his father and says Father it is time. The Northern General gets up and says thank you son for waking me. John is everything ok? John says Yes Sir all is quiet. William chuckles and says So now that we all awake we must prepare for this Savannah is upstairs getting ready with Lucy John turns around surprised and says with Lucy?

  William says yes now I know where Savannah gets her strong will from and he smiles. The Northern General says well lets go over the lay out of our plans. The three men go over to the table and look over everything.

  Meanwhile back out side the Southern General is now laying down again fast a sleep. The head soldier walks out of his tenet and goes over to the fire. The young soldier comes up to him and sits down next to the fire as well. The head soldier says this is getting out of hand. The General is getting worse I caught him trying to leave his tent to go find Savannah and who knows what. This is not going to be easy. He is very disoriented. The young soldier says well what do you wish us to do? The head soldier says we must go speak to Savannah warn her of what is going on it maybe her only hope to live.

  The young soldier says what do you mean? The head soldier says The General is not him self and I feel Savannah is in danger and if we warn her maybe just maybe, it will save us all. The young soldier says if this is what you think is right I shall stand watch here you go to the house and see if you can speak to her. The head soldier not sure looks at the young soldier and says Ok you keep a sharp eye on the General and if he awakes keep him here until I return. The young soldier says but Sir how do I do that? The head soldier says Get him ready for his wedding help him in anyway possible convince him he must look his best Come on soldier use you’re head. Yes, Sir says the young soldier, gets up, and stands guard out side the tent.

  The head soldier starts his way up to the house. He thinks to him self I hope this helps and I am doing the right thing? As the head solider walks up the path to the house, One of the northern soldiers spot him and tells the soldier next to him to go inform the General of what is happening the soldier say yes sir and goes off to the house. In the house the soldier walks into the kitchen and salutes General Sir Yes soldier the northern general says

  The soldier replies there is a southern soldier on his way up to the house Sir we await you’re orders. John and William go to the other window out in the living room and takes a look. William goes back to his father and says he is right but it is the Southern generals head soldier wonder why he is coming here? The Northern General says to the soldier tell the men to stand their ground lets see what happens. The soldier salutes and is off to relay the message. He returns to his other soldiers and tells then the General has said to stand our ground and let him pass.

  John comes back into the kitchen and says well he is almost to the door maybe we should get Savannah and Lucy? The Northern General agrees and tells William to go up and have them come down. William says yes and goes up the stairs. He walks over to Savannahs door and knocks Lucy answers it William she says what’s wrong? William says that he needs for them both to come down stairs right away. That the Southern Generals head soldier is on his way up to the house. Lucy says Oh; we shall be down in a second. William says good and walks away to go back down stairs. Lucy closes the door and tells Savannah about the head solider coming to the door and they need to g down stairs. Savannah agrees and throws on a robe.

  Savannah and Lucy go down the stairs to where the three men are. Savannah says What do I do? The Northern General says just answer the door and invites him in. Let’s hear what the soldier has to say but everyone must be on their guard. William and John agree and get into position. Lucy says and I where shall I be? Savannah says why with me of course Lucy we shall do this together. Lucy nods her head and both go out into the living room awaiting the knock on the door. The head soldier finally gets to the front door and hesitates to knock. He stands there for a moment debating if he is doing the right thing. He looks up at the do
or and knows he is and then he knocks on the door.

  Savannah pauses for a moment before answering it so it does not look like she was waiting for him. Savannah opens the door and says Hello to the head soldier. The head soldier replies Hello Miss. Savannah looks at the head soldier and watches him pause for a moment. The head soldier says I hate to come bother you on such an important day Miss and I would not even be here if it were not important. Savannah says would you like to come in and we shall talk about what is so important? The head soldier pauses again not sure; he should then slowly enters the front door. Savannah closes the door behind the head soldier and offers him a seat and a drink. The head soldier says no thank you Miss I must not stay long. I have something I must inform you of.

  Savannah says Ok please go on. The head soldier looks up at Savannah and says The Southern General ….well…he is not… Savannah Yes he isn’t what? The head soldier pauses because he does not know how to explain it to her without alarming her. Savannah says maybe you should sit down and I will have Lucy bring you a drink and then you can tell me. The head soldier agrees. He figures it will give him a moment to put what he has to say into words that will not alarm her. The head soldier walks over to the couch and sits down. Lucy pours a drink and hands it to the head soldier. The head soldier says Thank you. Lucy says you’re welcome and walks back over to the fire place. Savannah looks at the head soldier and says ok now what is so important about the Southern General I need to know? The head soldier takes a sip of the drink and deep breath and knows he must warn her.

  In the kitchen, the three men are all in position waiting to hear what the boy has to say. The Northern General sits watching how nervous the head soldier is. He thinks to him self this must be very hard on him to do. He is very nervous about telling Savannah and if that so then he must feel as if he is going against his General. This must be very important information for this soldier to be this nervous. I wonder if he will be able to tell Savannah what he has come to tell her? John and William are watching for the door and John says to William, I wonder what could be so important? The soldier looks like he is having trouble speaking to Savannah about whatever it is. William says He does look nervous but if it wasn’t important the soldier would of never come here without his General knowing. John agrees and the two go back to watching the living room.

  Meanwhile back at the Southern Generals camp. The Southern General is tossing and turning dreaming about his wedding to Savannah. The young soldier sits and listens carefully. The Southern General starts to speak in his sleep about how much he loves Savannah and how he knew, she would be his wife. He talks to Savannah as if she there with him and says If anyone was to come between us or get in my way I shall kill them. The southern general rolls over. The young soldier sits and says to him self. I hope the General does not find out the head soldier is up at the house talking to Savannah right now. I do not think it would go over to well with him. The young soldier goes back to warming some coffee on the fire. The Southern General awakes from his slumber and calls for the head soldier. The young soldier springs to his feet, goes into the Southern Generals tent, and salutes him. The Southern General says you are not my head soldier boy where is he? The young soldier says Sir he is out scouting the plantation making sure there is no enemies about.

  The Southern General says ok that is great to hear. I must get ready to marry my bride. The young soldier says Sir shouldn’t you wait until the head soldier gets back so he can help you in preparing? The Southern General still dazed and disoriented shouts I do not want to wait! The young soldier says Sir you do want to look your best for your bride to be? Yes soldier of course I do the Southern General exclaims. Then why not await his return from scouting rest a bit more so tonight will be perfect for you and your beautiful bride.

  The General snaps at the young soldier BEATIFUL BRIDE!! Have you been anywhere near my Savannah soldier? NO, no the young soldier says. The Southern General says then how do you know she is beautiful? The young soldier replies You have spoken many times of her beauty Sir. The Southern General say Oh yes that is right. He turns and lays back down on his cot and tells the young soldier to leave him and to have the head soldier wake him when he returns. The young soldier says Yes Sir and goes back out to his fire. The young soldier whispers to him self That was a close one I hope he gets back here soon I don’t know if I can do that again. I am not sure next time the General will listen to me, then what?

  Meanwhile back at the house the head soldier sips his drink and takes a deep breath. He says to Savannah Miss the Southern General has not been himself as of lately. He started to show signs of ..... and the head soldier pauses trying to find an easy way to say what he must to her. Savannah says Go on you can tell me. It seems it is very important. The three men in the kitchen watch anxiously awaiting to hear what the head soldier has to say. The head soldier says well The Southern General is losing his mind Miss. Savannah is taken back a bit and her eyes widen. The three men in the kitchen look at one another as if they are in disarray as well. Savannah replies, How do you know this to be true? The head soldier replies Miss I started to notice a while back after we first came here.

  He began to forget things and talk in his sleep. Savannah intrigued listens carefully to him. Then he began to try to wonder off. As we were coming back here all his men turned around and ran for it. Miss he is not right I tell you. He is on edge all the time and he does not always know where he is or what time of day it is. Savannah completely thrown back by what she has just heard sits quietly. John, William, and the Northern General are astonished by what they just heard as well. William says I wonder if the sleeping aid Savannah gave him did not heighten his illness?

  Savannah says Are you sure? The head solider replies yes Miss believe me he is not the same man he was when we last met. Savannah gets up from the couch and walks toward the table near the window where Lucy is. The head soldier says Miss I did not want to alarm you but I felt you needed to know this before you marry him. I do not want to see anything happen to you Miss. Savannah turns around, looks at the head soldier, and says I thank you for informing me. I know this was not easy for you to do.

  The head soldier gets up from the couch and walks toward the door. He say to Savannah Miss I am not sure betraying my trust to the Southern General was ok but what I do know I couldn't in good faith watch him marry you and not tell you of him being ill and crazy. I fear for your safety and I hope I was not out of line by coming here to speak to you on your special day? Savannah walks over to the head soldier and grabs his hand she says to him as she looks up at him You did the right thing. You have a good heart and I promise you the Southern General will never know about this.

  I appreciate you coming here and telling me all this. I now have a warning to watch for after we marry. The head soldier says Miss you still plan to marry the Southern General? Savannah replies Yes I do, I gave my word and I shall keep it. I do ask that you take care of your self and be careful. The head soldier replies I shall Miss. I must be getting back to my post before the Southern General awakes and sees I am not there. I shall awake him soon and when he is ready I shall bring him here for your wedding. Savannah says thank you, then she pauses and says you will be here for our wedding? The head soldier says oh yes Miss I shall be standing outside the door to keep watch for enemies.

  Savannah thanks him again and closes the door behind him after he leaves. The head soldier begins his walk back to his camp. He starts thinking to him self I have done the right thing? He goes on to say Yes I know I have. I could not allow this wedding to go on if I did not give, Miss a warning, and let her know the truth about the southern general. I know I have betrayed his trust but I had no choice. I could not let him hurt her and will not let him hurt her. Then the head soldier thinks I hope the boy did not have any trouble with the Southern general while I was gone.

  Chapter 13

  Meanwhile back at the house Savannah and Lucy walk into the kitchen where William, john, and the Northern General ar
e sitting at the table going over what they just heard. William gets up from the table, goes over to Savannah, and puts his arms around her. Savannah are you ok? He asks. Savannah leans into his body and says Yes William I am fine. Lucy says shall I put a pot of water on for some coffee? The Northern General says Yes please do so Lucy. Lucy goes over to the kitchen sink with the iron pot and begins to fill it with water for coffee. She then lifts it up, walks over to the oven, and places the pot on the iron hook for boiling.

  William leads Savannah over to the chair near him at the table. They both sit down and look at the Northern General. William says so father what do we do now? The Northern General says well this is more dangerous then we had figured. John replies so what do we do now? William starts in and says Savannah remember the sleeping aid you gave me and then gave to the General? Savannah says Yes but why and what does that have to do with anything? William replies I did not want to tell you but when you gave it to me, it made me a bit insane. I mean I was having weird dreams and walking in my sleep. Like the night I feel down in the bathroom.

  Savannah never realized it was the sleeping aid. She starts to tear. William says oh my dear no tears it is ok you did not know it was so strong and it would do that. Savannah replies I was trying to help you rest better while you healed. William puts his arms around her and tells her it is ok. Lucy says My family made that sleeping aid long ago and I have never seen it cause that before. The Northern General says did you use a different ingredient this time Lucy? Lucy thinks about it and says yes sir I did I had to use a different type of flower cause we don't grow them here in Atlanta.

  That is what changed it! The Northern General says. That is where the potent that has caused these crazy and diluted things to happen. The Northern General gets up from his seat and says but we cannot worry about that now. We must figure out our next step and action before the sunsets and this wedding takes place. John gets up from the table and says I do not see what we can do the plan of action we have is the best we can do and hope for the best when this begins.
