  “Yes, I’m serious,” Anna said.

  “What about the good doctor?”

“He’ll be okay. He has a line of interns, nurses, and orderlies just waiting to help him feel better.”

  “So you guys broke up?”

She nodded and started walking again. “About forty-five minutes ago. It was very amicable.”

“Yeah, well, there’s always time for bitterness and regret later. Are you sure it’s over?”

  Anna laughed and nodded. “Positive.”

“So, am I going to be your rebound guy? Because I’m fine with that.”

“We can wait awhile, if you want.” She stopped at her front door.

He shook his head. “No, I don’t want to wait. I’ve waited too long already.”

She kissed him on the cheek and then handed him the flowers so that she could unlock the door.

“I can’t believe you’ve finally come around, Anna Malone,” he said with a triumphant smile.

She opened her door. “Like I said, George, some people can change.”
