Now the senate hearings were shining a bright light on the entire Oliveri family operation. Cade had been angry at first that Fontana now received the same protection as she did, but she’d come around to the realization that Fontana’s cooperation and the attention it drew to the Oliveris made it less likely they’d risk revenge.
“I owe your dad for the last few weeks,” Cade said. “Plus, I don’t know if anyone else involved in the case would have ever told me about Wade. I still feel bad for him, but now at least I know he wasn’t an innocent bystander.”
Emily scooted closer. “I’m pretty sure Dad’s the one who owes you. You practically wrote the Sinclair bill, and you’re not getting any credit for it.”
“Don’t want any.” Cade wrapped an arm around Emily and kissed her on the shoulder. Senator Sinclair had invited her to travel to DC to attend the hearings, but she’d already made other plans that involved staying close to home. “I have everything I want right here. Besides, I’d much rather be watching the hearings sitting next to the senator’s half-naked daughter than sitting in a room full of politicians.” She pointed at the TV. “They’re just getting started, but it’s already getting heated.” She traced the hem of Emily’s robe with her finger, and the voices on TV receded. “Speaking of heated.”
Emily swatted her hand. “Don’t you dare. I have to be in court in an hour.”
“Good thing we live only a few blocks from your office.”
“And yours if you’re serious about working with Brody after you pass the bar exam.”
“I am.”
Emily reached up and brushed a strand of hair from her face. “You know that means we’re going to wind up being on opposite sides sometimes.”
Cade heard the tentative tone in her voice. She didn’t blame Emily for being hesitant. She was too. They’d briefly discussed her taking a position at the DA’s office, but decided their personal relationship would be better off if their professional one wasn’t boss to employee. With Brody, she’d have the opportunity to be a mentor, and as an added bonus, Asher was now working part-time for the firm doing investigative work. After the bar exam and an extended trip to visit her family, including her newly-arrived niece, Cade planned to join Brody and Asher and start her new career as a defense attorney.
The only drawback with her plans was the certainty she’d have to go up against Emily from time to time, but after everything they’d been through, she was confident they’d be able to navigate any obstacles between them. She pulled Emily into her arms and held her tight. “We may be on opposite sides, but we’ll always be working toward the same goal.”
Emily grinned. “Cade Kelly, you say the smartest things.”
Cade smiled at the sound of her name on Emily’s lips. She’d decided to keep the new last name since it represented her new life—a life she couldn’t imagine being without. “Keep that in mind when you’re trying to kick my ass in court.”
“I will. Just remember one thing.”
“What’s that?”
“No matter how many times I win in the courtroom, our love is the biggest win of my life.”
Cade’s heart swelled. “I couldn’t agree more.”
