Here Is Real Magic

I am not an anthropologist, and while I have gleaned personal insight from the writing of David Abram and Bronislaw Malinowski, the interpretation of their works in this book is mine alone. Please do not hold them accountable for any misunderstanding on my part. The interview with David Abram referenced in this book comes from a conversation with writer Scott London.

I’d like to thank my parents, Art and Jayne, my brother, Ben, my sister, Kimberly, my in-laws, Martin and Mary Ellen, and my longtime friends Brandon Crase, Jon Sargent, Dave and Renee Gould, and Jay and Ellen Holstein.

Finally, I’d like to thank my two children. Parts of this book were written with each of you sleeping as babies on my lap—helping, we called it—and one day I’m sure you’ll both read it. I hope it helps you understand why I had to go away sometimes, and what I was looking for while I was out there. When you’re older I hope you remember to look for it, too, in your own way, and I hope more than anything that someday you find it.

Author’s note: To write this book I drew upon my journal from India, my own memory of the events and places, and Andy’s extensive video footage from our trip. Much of the dialog in the second half of the book comes directly from those transcripts, though in some instances I had to reconstruct dialog when no record of the conversation existed. In those cases I have attempted to consult those involved to ensure the conversation has been represented accurately. Some of the names in this book have been changed to preserve anonymity.
