Big-time.
But the pain of loss that filled Joe, filled him, too. He’d cared for Emma. Loved her, in his own way. God, just thinking about her made him want to break down. She’d gone so quickly. One day tossing jabs at him and smiling in that way only she could. A few later…gone.
Damn, it hurt. It hurt so fucking bad. And she was just his friend.
Emma was Joe’s light.
Gary couldn’t begin to imagine what Joe was going through. The crippling pain he must feel. Yet what had he done? Sure as shit, not the job he was paid to do. He hadn’t protected Joe from Marvin’s bullshit.
Now Joe was gone. One look at the destruction before him and Gary knew it.
Joe had walked.
Desperate to stop him, Gary took off at a jog, down three flights of stairs, across the lobby and out the front door, bursting onto the sidewalk in time to find Joe climbing into a taxi.
“Joe!”
Joe froze, but didn’t turn back. “Tell Marvin he’s fired,” he said, voice filled with anger and heartache.
Happily. “And me?” Gary asked, knowing he deserved the same fate.
Joe hung his head. He didn’t answer.
Goddamnit, he had to fix this. Seven years of friendship was washing away before his eyes and damned if Gary know how to fix it. “Where are you going?”
“I need to go for a walk.”

About the Author
The youngest of four, Sarah Grimm can’t remember a time when she wasn’t writing. In fact, her siblings believe she began writing in utero to pass the time. As a child, Sarah wrote constantly, littering the house with bulging spiral notebooks and ignoring the ribbing of her mother and sister who routinely said ‘romances?’ in a somewhat scornful tone. Sarah is a Romance Through the Ages award winner for Best Contemporary Romance, a RONE Awards finalist, and a Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence finalist.
