Keep in mind, when you are playing modded Minecraft, you’ll be running many mods, simultaneously. These mods have been tested for compatibility with each other and should function properly, but some of the modpacks will cause your Minecraft to crash unexpectedly. I’ve found that I like using the Direwolf20 modpack, and I’ve had very few crashes when using it. However, there are a lot of mods in that modpack, and it strains my computer a lot! I get lag issues because my computer is old, and that can be frustrating for me sometimes. But the modpack is so incredible that I’m willing to put up with a bit of lag. Wait until you go to the Ur-ghast’s castle and see how incredible it is; you’ll forgive a little lag in exchange for a great gaming experience.

To download Feed-the-Beast or the Curse Client, first talk with your parents and tell them what you are doing. These programs might cause problems on your computer and may cause difficulties for others, so always get your parents’ permission beforehand.

(When I downloaded FTB, even I called my mom first and asked her permission. She’s eighty years old, and she said “Mine-what?” I took that as her agreement.)

Certainly, the safest way to see the things I was writing about is to go to YouTube—again, only with your parents’ permission—and watch some of the mod showcase videos from Direwolf20. He has a great mod showcase on the Twilight Forest that is definitely worth watching.

You may need to make an account on feed-the-beast.com or curse.com, so ask your parents first. I went to https://www.feed-the-beast.com/ and downloaded it from that site. You can also find it at https://www.curse.com/games/minecraft, but anywhere else is risky. Direwolf20 has a great video, showing you how to load the Curse Client, and how to load different modpacks. It’s at https://youtu.be/lf2y1D8wMdU and is worth watching.

You can find instructions on how to install FTB on their wiki page, https://ftbwiki.org/Tutorial:Installing_Feed_The_Beast_on_PC, or http://ftb.gamepedia.com/Getting_Started_(Main). There are also numerous videos on YouTube that show how to load FTB and how to install modpacks. There are many great resources there to help you install this software successfully, if you do your research and are careful.

Once you have FTB or the Curse Client and your modded Minecraft is working, you can create a world with the seeds below, and go to the coordinates I’ve listed to check out what I was seeing when I was doing my “Research” for this book. I was using the Direwolf20 modpack with these seeds.

Lastly, I want to apologize in advance … you won’t be able to see any of these biomes on the Gameknight999 Minecraft Network, because the Twilight Forest mod will not run there.

  Enjoy!

EXCERPT FROM MONSTERS IN THE MIST

  A BRAND NEW GAMEKNIGHT999 ADVENTURE

The cobblestone platform was surrounded by columns of ice that stretched high into the air like the ice spikes of the Overworld. But these frozen structures were much taller than anything his companions had ever seen, stretching up thirty blocks, if not more. To Gameknight999 they looked like some mythical giant had thrust them up through the snowy landscape from deep underground. The bright sun overhead sent rays through the crystalline structures, breaking the light up into rainbow colors that splashed down across the snowy terrain. Red and greens and blues and yellows stretched across the ground, coloring the snow like sheets of multi-flavored cotton candy. It was like standing inside a kaleidoscope … it was fantastic.

“What is this place?” Digger asked as he set Tux on the ground.

Instantly, the little penguin flopped down on her side and rolled around on the ground, the cold, frozen carpet of snow caressing her skin. She squawked and squeaked with delight. Stitcher sat down next to the penguin, picking up balls of snow and rubbing them against her black and white body. Tux purred contentedly.

Gameknight moved to a small hill and climbed to the top. Carefully, he surveyed the landscape, searching for any of the purple taint that was slowly infecting the last world. This Age was covered with snow and ice, the white terrain only broken by the occasional dark trunks of trees, the normally green-shaded leaves frozen to a glacial blue. Strange jagged shafts of translucent ice stuck up into the air, forming complex crystalline structures in every shape and size. It was as if the giant forms had been moving, dancing in every way possible, then were suddenly frozen in place, their waltz violently stilled. Though Gameknight found the shapes beautiful, they were also disturbing.

“Pretty incredible landscape.” Crafter moved to his side and gazed out across the biome.

“Sure, if you like freezing,” Hunter added as she crunched her way to the top of the hill.

Gameknight glanced at each and smiled. “It’s fantastic the way the sunlight goes through those icy pillars and the …”

  “Village,” Hunter snapped suddenly.

“The what?” the User-that-is-not-a-user asked, confused.

“I said village,” the girl replied, her curly red hair looking unusually bright against the frozen landscape. “There’s a village over there.” She pointed with her enchanted bow.

Gameknight turned and peered in the direction she pointed. In the distance, a village was visible, the houses made of snow and packed ice, blending in with the background. A tower made of light blue ice loomed over the village, the top covered with snow. It reminded Gameknight of a frosted blueberry popsicle. He smiled.

“This land is in pain, like the last, yes, yes,” Empech said in his high-pitched voice.

Gameknight turned and glanced down at the little gnome. The pech shook, but not from the cold. The User-that-is-not-a-user could see a look of fear in his deep blue, gem-like eyes. Something wasn’t right.

  “What’s happening here?” he asked.

“It is not clear, but something is wrong, yes, yes.”

“We should check the village,” Crafter said. “Make sure everyone there is okay.”

  “Maybe you’re right,” Gameknight replied.

One of the wolves barked, then gave off a loud howl.

“My wolves found Entity303’s scent,” Herder said. “He went that way.” The boy pointed in the direction opposite from the village. “We should follow.”

“I think we need to check the village first,” Gameknight said.

“But the trail …” Herder said.

“Sometimes people are more important than animals,” Weaver interrupted, his voice ringing with anger.

A wolf next to Herder growled, his fur bristling.

“It’s all right, Weaver,” Gameknight said. “Herder just wants to keep the wolves on a fresh scent.”

Herder nodded, his long, tangled hair falling across his face.

  Weaver smirked.

“I’m going to the village to check it out,” the User-that-is-not-a-user continued. “All of you can stay here if you want.”

Squawk, squawk! Tux said, then scurried up the hill and stood at Gameknight’s side.

“I have to agree with Tux,” Hunter said. “Let’s follow Gameknight999.”

“Everyone get your bows out and keep your eyes open,” the User-that-is-not-a-user said. “We need to be ready just in case Entity303 left some kind of surprise here for us.”

They moved out, following Gameknight999 as he ran toward the village. His breath created a billowing cloud of mist as he exhaled, his nose and lips growing cold and getting slightly numb. His fingers ached as he squeezed his bow, but Gameknight didn’t want to put it away; an itch at the back of his neck was telling him something was amiss.

A growl sounded off to the left. It was a polar bear with two of her cubs. The huge animal stood up on her back feet and snarled at the party, her eyes and nose dark as charcoal. The creature extended sharp, black claws for the end of her front paws and waved them in the air. Instantly, Gameknight veered to the right, wanting to keep as much distance between them and the massive animal as possible; it was never a good idea to tangle with a polar bear while her cubs were near. The wolves growled back at the bear, but happily moved away from the huge predator as well.

“Anyone there?” Crafter yelled as they neared the village.

The only sound was the crunching of their boots through the frozen crust of snow. The ever-present wind blew from the east, causing a jingling sort of sound to fill the air. Gameknight thought it sounded like delicate crystalline wind chimes, but he’d never heard those before in Minecraft.

“Looks like they’re all gone,” Hunter said.

“Come on,” Gameknight said, sprinting forward.

The party ran across the frozen plane, the sound of tinkling wind chimes slowly getting louder. When they entered the village, the companions split up, searching the homes. Herder’s wolves circled the cluster of buildings, smelling the ground for traces of NPCs, but quickly returned; they found nothing.

Gameknight stood next to the village well and waited, nervously shifting hi
s bow from one hand to the other.

  Squawk! Tux said.

Kneeling, the User-that-is-not-a-user patted his friend on her soft head. “I don’t know where everyone is either. But if they’re gone … where did they go?”

The penguin squawked again, then flopped over on her side and rolled about in the snow.

Hunter suddenly appeared at Gameknight’s side, her brow furled in confusion.

  “Anything?” he asked.

She shook her head, her curls bouncing about like crimson springs. “I didn’t find anyone, but I found items from people’s inventories discarded all over the place.”

“That doesn’t sound good,” Gameknight replied. “Show me.”

She led him to the nearest house. Right in front of the door, a pile of tools hovered just off the ground, bobbing up and down as if riding the gentle swells of an unseen ocean. The pickaxe, shovel, and sword were all covered with a thick layer of snow, making them difficult to see against the snowy ground.

“What are these?” he asked, pointing to the wall.

  The wind chimes grew louder.

Thin shards of ice were stuck against the door of the house. Each looked like a tiny dagger and was plunged deep into the wood. Gameknight reached out and touched the keen edge of the frozen spike; it was razor sharp. He glanced over his shoulder and found Crafter and Empech standing near the village well, talking. He motioned them to come near. Digger and Woodcutter saw the gesture and came as well.
