They made slow sweet love and Beau stared into her beautiful blue eyes. “Happy?”

  “Mmm.”

“You’re everything that’s good in me.”

She pushed hair away from his forehead. “No more thoughts about being a bad son?”

“Not a one. I know that events from my childhood shaped me into the man I am. All I have now are good feelings.”

She sighed. “It took us a long time to get it right.”

“Yes, and we’ll treasure it more because of that.”

“Mmm.” She glanced toward the ceiling. “We have three bedrooms upstairs and this is a big house. I was thinking that it would be nice for Zoë to have a little brother or sister.”

He looked deep into those gorgeous eyes and he didn’t see any fear or any pain. All those fears were gone. As he struggled with his emotions, she continued, “My mother said to let you help me heal. My father said not to be afraid to take a risk. They didn’t want me to make the same mistakes that they had.” She cupped his face. “I can honestly say that I have healed because of you and now I’m not afraid to take that risk.”

“I can see that,” he whispered, and buried his face in her neck. “The thought of you going through that kind of pain again is…”

She kissed his forehead. “We’ll face it together. Isn’t that what love is all about?”

  “Mmm.”

“And I’m not doing this because I need a baby or I feel you deserve one. I’m doing it for Zoë. I don’t want her to grow up as an only child.”

He raised his head. “You’re wonderful.” He kissed her long and deep then gazed into her passion filled eyes. “Let’s wait until after Christmas and if it’s still something we both want, we’ll talk again.”

She smiled. “I love you, Beau McCain, and I’m never again going to be afraid to say that.”

  “Cock-a-doodle-do.”

At the rooster’s crowing, they dissolved into laughter, holding on to each other. They’d come so far and now they would go into the future to a life they both wanted.
