“He had a heart attack a year ago.”

“Oh, god, I’m so sorry. How is your mom?”

Jason ran a hand through his hair and then looked down at her. “Not the same. My dad was her world; he was our world. He was self-made. One of the most successful real estate developers in Los Angeles. He was an amazing father and a great husband. We try to see her every week. We try and rotate between the three of us and keep her busy.

Gabby’s heart swelled. Where and how did this man come into her life? He was gorgeous, smart, had a huge heart, and it sounded like family was his number one priority. She looked up at him and stretched out and gave him a soft kiss. “She sounds like a lucky woman to have such thoughtful sons.”

He grinned down at her. “I’m the lucky one. So what’s the deal with Carl? Why are you so protective of him?”

Gabby scooted to the edge of the bed and slipped on her tank top and underwear. She ran her fingers through her hair in an effort to take out some of the knots before she piled it up on her head in a messy bun. Then she turned to him and said, “I don’t have any family, and Carl has been there for me when my parents died. He was one of my dad’s best friends, and I’ve known him all my life. He sits out there all alone. His only son visits him maybe every couple of months, so I make an effort to try and keep him busy when I can. I play chess with him every Sunday, bring him meals and bake. I love doing it. I love taking care of him.” She stood and asked, “You hungry?”

Jason reached out and palmed her pussy. “Yeah, for this.” He growled. Gabby laughed and ran out the door and headed for the kitchen. She could hear Jason’s footfalls not far behind her. She looked at the clock, and it was already past 4:00 pm.

She pulled the fridge open and grabbed a container that had some leftover pasta. She held it up in the air to show him. “Pasta?”

Jason grabbed it from her hands. “I’m supposed to be taking you out for supper, so I’ll do the cooking.”

Gabby laughed. “Umm. You mean the reheating?” The front door slammed, and she watched Holly stroll in.

“Well, holy fuck.” Holly whistled at Jason checking out his bare chest and the ink that cover both arms. She shook her head and looked at Gabby. “I really fucked up.”

  “What are you talking about?”

Holly pointed to Jason, her finger going up and down his body. “All that. If I had known he was that fine, I would have never suggested the hookup.” She smirked at her best friend who was now laughing.

“Omg. You’re such a bitch.” Gabby said and slapped her friend's shoulder.

Holly held out a hand to Jason. “It’s nice to officially meet you, Jason. I’ve heard so much.”

Jason shook her tiny hand and let out a laugh. “You have?” His eyes landed on Gabby.

“So I hear you have brothers, are they single?”

“Wow, you’re not a shy one at all are you?”

Holly tucked a blonde strand behind her ear and smiled. “Not at all. Save’s everyone time.

Holly only stayed a few minutes. She had only popped in to drop off some things she had borrowed from Gabby. After she left, they ate the leftover pasta. Jason also explained his goals to her with this project and what type of proposal he was prepared to offer Carl. Gabby thought it was reasonable. He had called his brothers and explained what was going on, and they had agreed as long as they could get the deal closed the following week. All in all, Gabby thought Carl would be happy with the arrangement and she just hoped he would at least listen to him rather than kick him off the property again. After they ate, Gabby guided Jason into the living room where they both got comfortable on the couch and watched some television. It was nice being with someone else besides her golden retriever. She could definitely get used to this.

  Chapter Ten

Jason only knew Gabby for a little over a week, but the way she made him feel was insane. He had never felt like this before. He felt like he was flying on cloud nine every time he looked at her. The way she smiled and those eyes sparkled. Fate had brought them together, and he wasn’t going to let go. He looked at her in the passenger seat as they drove out to Mr. Peter’s house and said, “I’d really like to introduce you to my family after this is all finished. Would you be willing to meet them?” He asked.

Gabby smiled and looked at him. “I’d love that. Are they coming to Cedar Heights or you mean us going to Santa Monica?”

“If this goes our way, Steven and Darren will be here next week, but I’d love to bring you down to meet my mom. She would go insane if she met you.” He laughed and pulled into the driveway.

“Yeah, of course. I would love to.”

Gabby had called Carl ahead of time and asked him to at least hear out Jason. If he didn’t like what he had to say, then they would leave, and that would be the end of it.

Jason rapped on the front door and Carl opened it greeting both of them. He guided them to the back yard and they sat at the patio table. Jason was in awe at the view. His property was over a hundred acres and it overlooked Cedar Lake. It was a natural beauty.

“Thank you for meeting with me, Carl. I really appreciate it.” Jason shook the man’s hand showing Carl his gratitude. “I know we originally approached you with an offer for everything, but after Gabby explained the history, I totally understand. I lost my father last year, and we tried to get my mom to sell and move closer to us, but she refused. She couldn’t bear to be in a new house. She just wanted to stay where she knew all his memories were.”

Carl leaned back in his chair and eyed Jason. “I’m sorry for your loss, son. It’s not easy losing a parent.” He said and looked over at Gabby.

“He knows Carl. I told him about mom and dad.” She smiled and lightly touched his arm.

Jason rested his arms on the table and looked at Carl. “So I’ve spoken with my brothers, and we could still get our project done if you would sell us fifty acres instead of everything.” Jason looked out towards the east and pointed. “So we would buy off this side, and you would keep the other portion and the house. We would also keep a perimeter closed off, so you had your privacy.” Jason explained and then looked at Gabby.

Jason watched Carl as he considered the offer and then asked, “How much are you willing to offer?”

“We’re prepared to offer you seven thousand per acre.” He leaned back in the chair and rested his hands on his lap. Jason watched Carl stand. “You thirsty?” He asked and looked at Jason and then Gabby.

“Sure. I’ll have something to drink.”

Gabby glanced at Carl. “I’ll get it, Carl. You guys talk.”

Carl’s hand shooed her to sit back down. “It’s alright, Gabby. I need to let this sink in. Give me a minute.” He walked away, and Jason and Gabby just looked at each other.

Jason mouthed to Gabby. “Is he okay?” She just shrugged not knowing. A few moments later, Carl returned with a tray of lemonade and some glasses. He placed it on the table and poured them each a glass and then poured himself one. Jason watched as he took a long deep sip of the cool liquid and sat the glass back down on the table. He turned to Jason and said, “You know I’ve lived here all my life. It’s the only thing I have left besides my son that rarely visits. I had planned on keeping all of this for him one day but realized I need to live in the moment and for me.”

Jason watched as Gabby smiled and laid her hand on top of Carls. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to Carl. Please don’t feel pressured. It’s a big decision.” She spoke softly to him, knowing he was struggling with the decision.

A moment later, Carl’s face lit up, and he smiled and held out a hand to Jason. “It’s a deal.”

Jason looked at Gabby and then back at Carl. He had a smile on his face from ear to ear and then clapped his hands. “Excellent.” He said, extending his hand to the old man. They shook hands, and Gabby congratulated Carl.

“What the hell am I going to do with all the money?” He asked, looking at Gabby.

  “May
be go away on a trip with your son. Spend some time together.” She suggested, and they watched his face light up at the idea.

Jason explained that he would draw up the paperwork that week and personally hand-deliver it to him. He pushed his chair out and said, “Well, I need to head back to Santa Monica. We’ll talk next week.”

Jason and Gabby said their goodbyes and left. He dropped off Gabby at her house. They both got out, and he had her leaned up against the driver side of the vehicle. “I don’t know if I can handle staying away for a few days.” He groaned into her neck and gave her a small kiss.

  “I’m only an hour away.”

He groaned again, and his hand cupped her pussy. “Too far. Now the deal is done I think I may start some house shopping down here.”

Gabby looked up at him. Her face was marred with confusion. “Why? I have a house that will fit both of us.”

  Jason’s face lit up. “Seriously?”

Gabby wrapped her arms around his waist and leaned her head into his chest. “Absolutely. It’s crazy, but I think I am falling in love with you.” She whispered and hoped he felt the same way.

Jason’s hand tipped her chin up to him. He stared into her green eyes and said in a husky voice, “I hoped you would say that because I know for a fact that I have fallen hard for you. I’m falling in love with you too.” His lips pressed against hers in a deep passionate kiss. Gabby was everything he had ever wanted in a woman and be damned if he was going to let her slip out of his hands.
