  The reporter provided some background information on the recent theft of Mrs. Tyree’s jewelry. Ben couldn’t believe Corie’s caper had made the news.

  Then the reporter asked the woman to explain what had just arrived in the box. Her features in an angry pout, she said, her voice thick with a Texas drawl, “Ah thought our thief had a change of heart, but apparently he was just rubbin’ it in!”

  She took a fistful of the contents of the box and held it up for the camera. Ben dropped the soda.

  Strings of Mardi Gras beads gleamed garishly. Not the diamonds and gold and emeralds Ben had thought he’d sent back, but plastic junk that could be bought for a dollar a string.
