“Steven’s dad seemed happy to see him,” Quinn said on the plane ride back to New York.

“Yeah, he did,” Krystal agreed, recalling what Steven had said about his relationship with his father, and how that contrasted with the big hug he’d offered his son when he’d appeared on his doorstep. “I hope that they get along better after this.”

“I’m sorry that it didn’t work out for the two of you to be together. I know you liked him.”

Krystal shrugged and glanced over at him. “He does have eyes the color of the sky at mid-day.”

  Quinn groaned.

With a chuckle, Krystal turned to him. “But he’s not what I need in my life. And I’m certainly not what he needs right now. Our lives are just…incompatible.”

“That’s very mature of you,” Quinn nodded. “I’m not sure I would have looked at things that way when I was your age.”

“Well, you were blissfully unaware of monsters when you were my age.”

“That’s true,” Quinn leaned back into his seat. “It’s so strange. I feel like I’ve known this life, as a hunter, for so long now. But it’s only been like a month. College, my parents, my girlfriend…that all seems like another life.”

  “It was another life.”

Quinn snorted. “You know what I mean. It seems like a lifetime ago. It’s funny how quickly we adapt, how our norms shift and we just go with it.”

Krystal looked at him curiously. “Are you happy with it?”

“I am. I mean, I wish the circumstances leading to me being here had been different, but it feels right somehow. Like this is where I’m meant to be.”

  “I know what you mean.”

Quinn turned to her. “You’re happy too?”

“For the first time in a long while, I really think I am. I feel good in my skin. Comfortable. Maybe because I kind of know who I am now.” She wrinkled her nose and glanced over at him. “Does that make any sense?”

  “Definitely.”
