“I didn’t invite him over here, and what’s this about me being on punishment? On punishment for what?”
“On punishment because I felt like saying that to him. And if you keep up with this attitude of yours, you will be on punishment.”
Kendal pouted and kept her eyes on the TV, ignoring me. Yet again, I didn’t feel as if this was the right time to talk to her about my plans with Brent. She and I would probably get into a heated argument. I didn’t want anyone, not even her, to ruin this day for me.
“I’m meeting Brent for dinner this evening. Are you planning on doing anything, other than watching TV and being on that computer?”
“Nope. It’s all you allow me to do, so the TV it is.”
“Kendal, stop talking nonsense. You were just at Tammi’s house for the whole weekend. And then when I told you to be home by six, you disobeyed me.”
“I told you why I was late. But just like everything else, you never believe me.”
I wasn’t in the mood to listen to her point the finger at me for every little thing. I tried my best to let her do some of the things she wanted, but the truth is, she had been lying to me about a lot of things. But instead of calling her out on those things, I headed to my room and removed my work clothes. I took a hot, soothing bath, and then chilled for a few hours, reading a book. Brent called, just as I was finishing up the last chapter.
“Hello, sweetheart,” he said, seeming more upbeat. “I’m all done for the day, so whenever you’re ready, you can head my way. We’re staying in again. I ordered Chinese. It should be here within an hour or so.”
“Chinese sounds good. I’ll be there soon, okay?”
“Hurry. I miss you.”
He didn’t have to tell me twice. I had my sexy black jumper all ready to go, and with a plunging neckline, sexy was written all over it. The pants were wide-legged, and the high heels I wore made me taller than what I already was. My attire was a bit much for just going to his house, but this was, no doubt, a special occasion. I wiggled my fingers in front of my eyes, wondering what kind of ring would suit my finger. I didn’t care if it was a one carat diamond or ten. Whatever Brent gave me, I would be completely satisfied. Our wedding day was also on my mind. I wasn’t sure what day he would choose, but figuring that it would be left up to me, I decided any time in the summer would be fine.
Kendal was in her bedroom, sitting in front of the computer. I heard her speaking to someone over the phone, and when she laughed and called Micah by his name, I cleared my throat. She quickly turned her head.
“I’m leaving,” I said. “I shouldn’t be long, but if you need me, call my cell phone.”
She waved her fingers in the air and continued to talk to Micah. I left the house, very concerned about where my relationship with my daughter was headed. She would be sixteen years old soon. I had a feeling that things between us weren’t going to improve. I planned to talk to Brent about any suggestions he had to help improve my relationship with Kendal. He was good with kids. I would take his advice and run with it.
Several minutes later, I arrived at Brent’s place. This time, he opened the door with a bottle of wine in his hand. He was casually dressed in a pair of jeans and a dark blue V-neck T-shirt that showed his chest. There was a diamond-stud earring in his ear. I had only seen him wear it a few times before. His bald head had a shine, and his trimmed goatee made my heart melt. My future husband sure as heck was handsome.
“You look amazing,” he said, widening the door for me to come inside. “I feel like a bum. You didn’t have to get so dressed up to come here.”
“True, but you already know how I am. This jumped out at me in my closet, so I decided to put it on.”
Brent couldn’t wait to grab me in his arms. His arms were locked around my waist, lips were already pressed against mine.
“Sweet,” he said. “I surely missed those lips, but not as much as I missed this.”
Brent caught me off guard when he lifted me off my feet, carrying me into his bedroom. He sat me on the bed, then squatted to remove my shoes.
“I hope you don’t mind that I asked the Chinese delivery driver to leave our food on the porch. There are other things I want to tend to right now, if you’ll let me.”
No argument from me whatsoever. Brent pulled his shirt over his head, and after he unzipped the back of my jumper, he lay over me. We started to kiss and grind against each other. I eased my hands in the inside of his jeans to massage his ass. I loved the way it felt when it tightened. I also loved how his meat felt inside of me. I was in a rush to proceed to the next level—so was he.
“I wish that we could do this forever,” he said between kisses. My jumper had hit the floor, and without a stich of underclothes on, I opened my legs wide, inviting Brent inside.
“We can go on like this forever,” I said. “And we will.”
Brent tapped his steel against my slit, before navigating it inside of me. I locked my lips on him, and as he thrusted in and out of me, I was in another world. For some reason, sex between us felt better than it had ever felt before. He wasn’t as gentle as he had always been, and I could tell from the mild roughness he added that he had missed me. He grinded harder. Kissed me as if my lips were the last thing on earth. Touched me all over and sucked my breasts like they were juicy melons. His pace was at a speed that brought forth sweat beads on his forehead. And with my legs thrown high over his shoulders, he pounded away to bring down my juices.
“I don’t ever want to be without this wet pussy,” he moaned. “You make me feel so good, baby. Damn, this is good.”
Making it even better, I turned on my stomach, exposing my pretty ass to him. He loved to work me from behind, but it wasn’t long before his steel sprayed my insides with semen.
“I . . . I need more.” He was barely able to catch his breath. “Give me a minute, and then I’m going to milk you dry.”
“Never, but it will be my pleasure to get you ready for the second round.”
Brent rolled over, and I lay on top of him. I pecked his chest, swiped my tongue across his nipples, and then lowered myself to make his limp muscle rise to the occasion again. Within a few minutes, his steel stretched my mouth. His head rubbed against my throat. The deeper it went, the more his steel expanded.
“Mmmmm, there you go, baby. Get it all in there. All of it.”
I was successful at doing just that. And as the taste of his dick got even better, I started to rain on the other end. His fingers were doing quite a number on me—I could barely keep still.
“The sound of that is like music to my ears,” he said. “Let’s shoot for the stars together.”
Brent’s fingers moved like a piano player inside of me, and as my head bobbed up and down from excitement, we finally came together. I had never been more pleased with his performance. While we lay next to each other in bed, I told him just that.
“I mean, you’re always good, but I felt as if you really put your foot in it tonight. What’s so special about tonight?” I teased. “Maybe you should take more vacations in the future.”
He laughed while cuddling me in his arms. “Maybe I will, but a week is too much. You are special, and there is no question that I’m real excited about you.”
I smiled, wondering if this was the moment he would break the good news. I snuggled against his chest, and as his fingertips lightly rubbed my ass, I closed my eyes.
“I’m so happy about our relationship, Brent. Never, ever did I think I would find a man like you. I truly thought men like you didn’t exist. I’m so lucky to have you in my life.”
He remained silent. I opened my eyes, and when I looked up at him, he leaned in for a quick kiss.
“Thanks for saying that,” he said. “We both are lucky, and I’ve been happy about our relationship too. But there always comes a time when things have to change. Things that are beyond our control, and we wish they could be different.”
My stomach tightened. I was about to pee on myself, I
was so excited. Change was coming to us real soon, and I could only imagine what our future would look like. I wasn’t sure if I would move into Brent’s house with him or if he planned to move in with me. Then again, looking for a new house with him would be fun.
I rubbed my fingers against his chest. “I wish things could be different between us too. I love our relationship, but there comes a time when we will have to consider taking it to the next level.”
He didn’t reply, but I felt movement in his body. I thought he was getting ready to get up and get the ring.
“But I don’t know if we’re ready for that step,” I continued. “You tell me. Are you ready to move to the next level with me or not?”
Brent released a deep sigh. He kissed my forehead before sitting up in bed. His move caused me to lift my head from his chest and sit up too. And when he reached for my hands, he held them with his. His eyes were locked with mine.
“If there is any woman I would consider moving to the next level with, that woman would be you. But, unfortunately,” he cleared his throat and swallowed, “I can’t go to that next level with anyone right now. There are a lot of things going on in my life, and even though I’m confused about a few things, I do know what I want.”
Confused? Hell, I was too, especially by what he’d just said. A frown was on my face. My eyes narrowed as I looked at him.
“What’s unfortunate, and why can’t you go to the next level? If you know what you want, I assume that you want me.”
He nodded. “I do, but it’s not that simple anymore. What I’m saying is—” He paused to look away. A tiny knot in my stomach started to form. I lifted my hand to his face, turning it so he could look at me again.
“What are you saying? You’re not making much sense here. If you have something to say, please say it.”
He swallowed hard while staring into my eyes. “What I’m saying is, this relationship has been amazing, and I like you a lot. But the truth is, I’m still in love my wife. I never stopped loving her, and this has been so hard for me.”
I released a deep breath and smiled. “Brent, stop kidding around. This is not the time to be joking around. You won’t get any laughs from me, talking like that.”
Brent’s expression remained serious. “I’m sorry, baby, but this is not a joke. I wish I didn’t have to say this to you, but I could never find the right moment to tell you that my wife and I had been discussing reconciliation. She finally agreed to give our marriage another chance. She’s going to move back to St. Louis in a few weeks, and I told her that my relationship with you would end.”
I stared at Brent without a blink. My breathing was no more. The knot in my stomach was so tight that it hurt. Tears welled in my eyes. I was speechless. I waited for him to say he was just kidding, but those words never came. I wanted him to tell me I could breathe again . . . to relax, but that didn’t happen. All he said again was, “I’m sorry. So sorry and forgive me for not telling you this sooner.”
My mouth opened, but I was unable to speak. I finally blinked, bringing down a slow tear that ran over my cheek. Brent reached out to hold me, and as I sat like a zombie, he rocked me in his arms.
“Please don’t cry. This hurts me too. You are such a wonderful woman, but I had to choose. I didn’t want to string you along, and continuing to be unfaithful to my wife isn’t something I want to do.”
Every time he said “his wife,” I flinched. A painful jab punched me in the gut and my mind started racing. I was completely caught off guard. None of this made sense, not one single thing.
“I understand if you’re upset. But please don’t be mad. We had something real special, and I don’t ever want you to forget how much you meant to me.”
The truth was I could only take so much of this. The pain was unbearable. It was worse than anything I’d felt before, simply because I had made Brent out to be something that he truly wasn’t. I pulled myself away from him, just to look into his eyes. I wanted him to look deep into my hurt, even though I was sure that it didn’t matter. The next thing I did was lift my hand and slap the shit out of him. His head jerked to the side, and that’s when my fist crashed into the side of his face. He jumped off the bed, not knowing what was coming next as he held the side of his face, displaying a frown.
“Damn it, Abby, what in the hell did you do that for? Shit!”
I spoke through gritted teeth. “Tell me right now that this is a fucking joke! Tell me that you are not married, and you have not allowed me to fall in love with a goddamn married man!”
Brent rubbed his forehead and squeezed his eyes together. He started to pace the floor with his eyes focused on me. “I didn’t know you were in love with me. Since when? You never said that shit, and I never said I loved you either.”
Boom! Yet again, I was stunned. My mouth was wide. I felt my blood about to boil over. “Hell no, you never said it, but you didn’t have to! You said a whole lot of other shit, and wha . . . What about the ring you purchased today? I guess that was for her, not me, right?”
“How did you know what I purchased today? Have you been following me?”
He was starting to sound real stupid. I was so frustrated that I hopped off the bed, just to get closer to him. And as I stood within inches of him, he could barely look at me.
I pointed at his temple, pushing it with my finger. “You know what? Fuck you and fuck your ring. To hell with your wife, ’cause she has got to be some kind of fool to be with a man like you. I mean, how could you, Brent? How can you stand there and do this to me? No warning, no anything. Just—just fuck my brains out, and then tell me to go to hell! That’s cold. You’re one cruel motherfucker, and I have never met anyone as cold as you.”
Tears streamed down my face as I snatched my jumper off the floor. Brent watched as I got dressed, not saying a word to me. I swear if I had a gun, I would have used it. There was so much more that I wanted to say and do to him. I was fighting to maintain the little composure I’d had.
“No matter what you think of me,” he said softly, “I did care about—”
“Shut the hell up talking to me!” I screamed. My voice was so loud that it caused him to cock his head back and gaze at me in shock. “Don’t you dare stand there and talk about how much you cared about me! You’re a fucking liar! All you ever wanted from me was some ass until you were able to patch things up with your wife!”
I looked up, shaking my head and thinking again about his wife. Did she even exist, and where in the hell had she been for over a year? At this point, it really didn’t matter. I was getting the hell out of there, and Brent would never have to worry about seeing me again. I snatched my shoes from the floor, and then I rushed by him so I could leave. He followed, still trying to apologize and clear up the severe damage he’d done.
“I wish you wouldn’t leave like this. Our relationship was more than sex and you know—”
I swung around, putting my finger near his face again. The devilish glare in my eyes warned him to back the hell up. He did.
“What am I supposed to do, huh? Stay here and throw a fucking party with you to celebrate your wife’s return? Get the hell away from me, Brent. If you want to live to see another day, you should not say another word to me.”
He took my advice and stayed several feet away from me as well. When I pulled open the door, I saw a brown bag that had our Chinese food in it. The aroma hit me immediately, so I snatched up the bag, hurling it in his direction. The bag busted, causing the rice and gravy to spill all over him. It was the least I could do before charging down the steps and getting into my car.
I watched as Brent slowly closed the door and turned off the porch light. Knowing that this was the end of our relationship, I laid my head on the steering wheel, crying like a baby while holding my aching stomach that delivered an insurmountable amount of pain.
Chapter Four
I was miserable. Miserable as hell more like it, and I thought that after a few weeks had gone by, I would start to fe
el better. That was in no way the case. I couldn’t stop thinking about Brent . . . more specifically, about what he had done. I felt dissed on so many different levels. I couldn’t believe he had done this to me. How could he fuck my brains out like that, and then turn around and say he was moving on? I had made myself sick just thinking about it. I kept having flashbacks of that day, thinking about what I should have done to him. I even thought about what I should have said, and needless to say, I let him off easy. Too easy.
Now, he was living happily ever after again with his wife. He thought he could just swat me away like a pesky fly and wash his hands of me. I had been thinking of some devious shit to do to him, and even though those things seemed so out of character for me, there was no question that Brent had to pay for the suffering he had caused me. I hadn’t been able to eat much or go to work. Since I had plenty of paid time off, I used that time off work to try to get myself together. That was two weeks ago. I still wasn’t quite right yet, and I hadn’t a clue what I could do to make myself feel better.
Spending time with Kendal was an option, but she was so negative about my breakup with Brent that I didn’t want to be around her. I let her go to Tammi’s house as she had asked, and whenever she got out of school, she always mentioned somewhere else she had to be. I wasn’t in the mood to get into a confrontation with her, especially since she had the audacity to say to me, “I told you Brent was no good. Why would you think he wanted to get married? He would never be considered a father of mine.”
Her words cut me to the core. How did my child know that he wasn’t worth two cents, yet I thought he was the best thing ever? I couldn’t have been that blind; then again, I was. Brent was fake, and the truth is, he used me during his downtime with his wife. There was no other way to simply put it. There was no love between us. He’d made that quite clear. And when all was said and done, he chose her instead of me. His decision would have made sense to me, had I known the bastard was married. Of course, his wife was the priority, but the way he kept her a secret was totally uncalled for. Damn him. And damn her too.
