  Shit. Her too?

“That was her name. Anyway, I grew obsessed with my research. Determined to find a cure, didn’t matter for what. I was driven. I got carried away. Forgot to eat, didn’t sleep.”

Here came the hard part. He didn’t like to think about it, hated to admit it, but the psychologist convinced him he had to accept it to heal. He snuggled her head under his chin.

“I performed a surgery dead on my feet.”

  Sandi gasped.

“Everything turned out okay. But afterwards, I slept for two days straight. I wasn’t proud after realizing I had been in no condition—physically—to perform said surgery. I was the only one who could. So, I did.”

Say something. Please tell me you understand. Forgive me.

  “What happened to the patient?”

“A young woman. She made it, without damage to her brain. Bad accident. Head Trauma.”

  “Oh my God. Brain surgery?”

“There was a concern of oxygen getting to her brain. Anyway, I shouldn’t have performed the surgery.” His fingers trailed over her shoulder as he spoke. He needed to touch her, needed her to listen. He just needed her.

“Why did you do it?” she asked softly.

Why? Because he could. Because there was no one else. He could list a dozen reasons. But the one he clearly recalled was the image of the girl’s father, tears running down his cheeks.

“Her father asked me to.” He closed his eyes in desperation. He could not turn down the father’s heartbroken pleas. “If we’d waited, she could have slipped into a permanent comma. Or brain death. It doesn’t matter. I did it.”

“And you saved that young girl’s life.” Sandi’s fingers curled in his chest hair. Her warm hand caressing, stroking, tantalizing.

  God, he loved this woman.

  “How old was she?”

  “Nineteen.”

“She’ll have the rest of her life, thanks to you.”

“Don’t make me out to be a hero. The point of that story is the reason why I had to leave.”

“I think I know you so much better now,” Sandi said as she climbed on top of him. Her luscious breasts swinging, then crushing to his chest. She felt so delectable. He swallowed as a rush of pure lust shot through his blood.

“Is that why you moved to a small town?”

“I’d worked myself to exhaustion,” he said, trailing his fingers up and down her back. The word didn’t stick in his throat the way it usually did. “I wanted a woman who would love me for me.”

“Oh, Doug. You have to know how I feel. I could care less about money. My parents left me a home. I have a job. I’m comfortable. Happy. I don’t care about materialistic things. My father and my mother taught me the important things to value. My parents raised me with love and an understanding of finances. I’m more interested in love than money. I could live anywhere, but I choose to live in my parent’s house, where I still feel their love.”

“Would you be happy with a doctor who loves you to distraction?”

She smiled with those amazing full lips. He traced them with his tongue.

“How about this time I make you a bargain?”

“I’m all ears, sweetheart.” He liked this playful side of Sandi. And he planned on spending the next fifty years or so exploring her depths and finding out every little secret.

“Hmm.” She gasped as he nipped her neck. Then he laved the spot with his tongue. Her voice lowered. “I was thinking of something perhaps a little longer than six months.”

“How about the rest of our lives?”
