SLEEPER (Crossfire Series)

Reed glanced back. “He had to spoil your mood, didn’t he?” he asked angrily.
“No, really, it didn’t spoil anything. It was good to have it out in the open. Now we’re equals. I can look him in the eye and know even though he’s still angry with me, he’s making an attempt to forgive me. So don’t be mad. I wouldn’t have liked him so much either if he’d hurt you like I did Amber. You told me yourself it’ll take time, right? I’m going to make it, don’t worry.”
He pulled her in his arms, and she hugged him back desperately. Did he know how much she needed him?
“We’re going to make it, you mean,” he said. “I’m going to take you away from here after GEM says you’re okay, and we’ll spend time together. I want to show you the beach where Arch lived. I’ll even teach you how to swim and surf.”
“That sounds nice,” she said wistfully.
“Lily?”
“Yes?”
“I just heard Arch say one of his lines from our favorite author.”
Lily smiled. She’d heard all about how Arch always talked to him at the most unexpected times. She’d even bought herself a copy of The Little Prince because Reed quoted from it so much.
“What did he say?”
“‘Love doesn’t consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction.’”
She laid her cheek against the heat of his chest and listened to the steady beat of his heart.
“There’s no one I want more in my future than you, Reed Vincenzio,” she said. “If you’ll have me…”
“Have you? I wanted you the first time I laid eyes on you, blond wig and all. And you know what?”
“What?”
“You were just about to go take a piss too. Providence, huh?”
Lily laughed. Her man had a way with words.

Notes
1. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944), World War II aviator hero, wrote The Little Prince. It’s a little story about a prince who fell to earth, his loneliness, his search for friendship and love, and about loss. Its simple truth attracted me, made me think of a man who had done much in a quiet and efficient manner.
2. Stimoceivers, brain transmitters and various biotelemetry mentions in story. You can read more from the writings and lectures of David Hoffman, Hugh Darrow, and Joseph Delgado. The brain and behavioral control have always fascinated me, and I spent much time researching on hypnosis, brain stimuli, CIA mind control projects (public records), crowd behavioral techniques and other related topics for my spies. You can see versions of it suggested in GEM’s NOPAIN method.
