  CHAPTER 1

  Wendy

WENDY LABRUCE HITCHED the strap of her backpack onto her shoulder and pressed the button of the ninth floor elevator of Seven Tech Tower. She glanced around with pleasure at the gleaming halls of Almatto Tech Joy. It was a couple of hours after the main office had closed and only a few staffers were hanging around. She sighed, thinking about the contents of her backpack and the work to be done tonight.

Never in a million years had she expected to land a job in the posh Seattle high rise, or find work in the Almatto Tech Corporation—a company owned by its sole shareholder and director, Draken Almatto. Draken was an eccentric, disturbingly sexy man who hired go-getters. A go-getter she was not. But she was a very good draftswoman. And it helped to know people. Not that she did. Her avatar could be found under shy recluse in the dictionary. Truth was, she knew only one person of note.

Luckily, that one person happened to be Draken Almatto’s wife. Wendy had met her way back before she had become Mrs. Charli Almatto.

Wendy had come across the curvaceous, rumpled young woman loitering in the hallway of her apartment building outside the stairwell, staring woefully at a button that had popped off her shirt. Wendy had darted into her apartment to loan her needle and thread. The women had hit it off, even though they were polar opposites. Whereas Wendy thought of herself as a rebellious geek, Charli was sexpot-with-a-dash-of-Mary-Sue. The other woman was reserved about her personal life...until she learned Wendy and been laid off and made her living drafting technical drawings. Then she’d squealed and confided who her fiancee was.

At first Wendy hadn’t believed that this friendly person could be engaged to such a sophisticated shark as the infamous Draken Almatto. But it turned out to be true. A week later Wendy had received an email, and the next Monday she was doing computer aided drafting of exercise equipment for Almatto Tech Sport in their offices at Seven Tech Tower.

Soon she’d be celebrating her third year with Almatto Tech, plus she’d just taken on additional work for one of the corporation’s other divisions, ATJ. That particular work she preferred to do at home.

The elevator doors opened. Wendy stepped in and nodded at the people waiting inside. They nodded back without interest. Wendy glanced down at herself with a shrug. People from ATJ and ATS were pretty friendly, for the most part, but most people in the building were busy professionals or high-end customers and clients who tended to dismiss her.

Well it’s not like you crave their attention. Who cares what they think?

She dressed to please herself. Her ex-boyfriend had accused her of dressing for shock value, but it wasn’t that. It was more that aside from her swan-like height, she was the very definition of average and people overlooked her anyway. So she might as well wear clothes she liked.

When asked about the dress code, Draken Almatto had raised his brows and told her to “wear whatever the hell you like.” She had taken him literally and dug out her old cosplay wardrobe.

Today she had on a simple prairie-style dress she had sewn herself, with a built-in-apron, a high neckline and ruffled cuffs. It would have made Laura Ingalls Wilder proud. Add to that her granny glasses and the fact that she was small up on top and too plump on the bottom, and she got why people might treat her like a freak.

She forgave them. But not her ex, who’d called her that right before he dumped her…

Come on. You’re over that. You didn’t even dig him very much. Not enough to let him kiss more than your lips. Moving on...

The elevator descended smoothly, stopped with exquisite precision, and opened to the breathtaking mezzanine level. The huge space could be described in two words: futuristic grandeur. She habitually got off here so she could walk down the cool spiral staircase to the ground floor lobby.

About to step down, she caught sight of Draken Almatto standing by the entrance to the fitness center.

At first she mistook him for a random hot guy, because he wasn’t wearing one of his trademark bespoke suits. But that GQ-worthy auburn hair was unmistakable. His jeans clung to a set of impressively muscular thighs. It was no wonder she and half the building were in lust with him. She was stunned when he spotted her and waved her over. What could he want with her?

But then she saw that Charli, standing next to him, was trying to get her attention. Almatto's wife wore a short yellow dress that draped over her extremely round stomach but left her legs bare. She always wore dresses that emphasized her lush, pocket-venus body. Just looking at her now made Wendy feel like an adolescent giraffe. A twinge of envy hit her when she saw Draken had his arm hooked around Charli, his large hand resting on her hip. It was an office joke that if Charli was in the building, Draken always found his way to her. Wendy strongly suspected she was tagged by radio frequency ID.

Wendy had nearly reached them when she spotted the third person standing there.

Like Draken, the man was tall and muscular, and in his own way just as devastating, with jet black hair and a stark black business suit. But he was much more potent. He wasn’t Hollywood-pretty. He was interesting.

Her steps slowed. She recognized him. He’d been hanging around the ATJ offices for the past couple of weeks.

She didn’t know his name or anything about him, but she’d covertly examined every detail of his appearance. His face fascinated her. To Wendy, faces were as sexy as bodies. She knew the sensual curve to his thin lips, the blade of his nose, the shadow of his jaw. With those cutting silver eyes, she could easily see him in an android costume. She’d found herself wishing he’d focus that laser gaze on her just once...but no, the few times their paths had crossed, his eyes had only passed over her indifferently.

She was annoyed by her own body’s responses to this guy even now, by the warmth shooting from her face to her breasts to her thighs and pooling between.

The first time she’d noticed him had been on the 10th floor while waiting for the elevator. He hadn’t noticed her at all. He’d been all over a blond woman—touching her arm, flirting. She’d spotted the two of them together a few times since, and the way they acted toward each other told her that they were sleeping together.

She hated to admit it, but imagining the android-ish man fucking the blonde had been how she’d gotten to sleep every night since. She’d touched herself to a mental video of him removing his clothes, mounting the woman, and ramming into her.

He was an awesome dream porn star. He’d given her some fantastic orgasms.

But he was supposed to be for fantasy. She was a virgin and he was out of he
r league. She’d also been dating Paul most of that time. When Paul dumped her, calling her a “prudish freak” with “ludicrous clothes,” it had been useful to have Fantasy Dark Stranger to help her deal with the blow.

She had no desire to come in contact with the man for real, though. Having the object of one’s sexual fantasies look through one as though one were invisible was rather crushing.

She walked up to the cozy little group, being sure to keep her back to the man in question. Draken winked at her briefly and Charli beamed. “Wendy, omigod! Long time no see!”

Wendy smiled at a flushed-and-glowing Charli. “You’re looking healthy. How are you feeling?”

Charli blushed as if Wendy had asked something embarrassing and said, “I’m really good. And you?”

“Not bad.” In the background, Wendy could hear the men’s low murmurs. Do not look at them. Especially not at Android-man.

“You’re working late. Still with your hermit ways?” Charli said knowingly. At Wendy's shrug, she urged, “Some of the yarn gang are getting together for a craft sale fundraiser this weekend. How about joining us? I’m bringing white chocolate covered pretzels….”

Wendy shifted uncomfortably. She and Charli weren’t really close friends. Since she’d been employed here, they’d sat down to lunch together a few times in the Tower and she’d attended a couple of her birthday parties, that was it. Charli had tried to get her to come to her yarncraft group, but Wendy had refused. “I don’t know. I’m not sure I have time. I’ve been working weekends.”

Charli slanted a frown at her husband. “Is that man working you too hard?”

Wendy gripped the strap of her backpack and answered truthfully, “I don’t mind.”

Charli sniffed. “He claims to care whether people have a life, but sometimes I wonder if that’s just his way of getting everyone to work even harder. How about I text you?”

“That’s fine.” Though trying not to, she’d been catching snatches of the men’s conversation. Now she heard a husky voice that didn’t belong to Draken rumble “been staying with Danielle” and knew it was him.

  Sir Android.

  Mr. Haughty Hottie.

She found herself wondering who Danielle was. The blond woman with the boobs she’d seen him with?

Charli suddenly turned to him. “I knew your sister would like it there. But I thought she had a dog, and they don’t allow pets.”

So Danielle was his sister. Hmm.

Anyway, it wasn’t any of her business, and nobody made a move to introduce her. This was clearly her cue to leave. Wendy started backing away. Suddenly Mr. Haughty Hottie glanced over at her, noticing her for the first time.

  Ever.

It was a truly momentous occasion. She froze, sensing the once-over he gave her. Would he take one look at her pioneer garb, glasses, and giraffe figure and dub her a kook like everybody else?

She couldn’t resist peeking at him to find out. And got her answer.

Yes, Wendy, you have been dubbed kookiest kook of Kookland. And guess what? That was your first and only chance to catch his notice. Oh, and by the way, there is no Santa Claus.

Because sexy android man was saying something to Charli. Discussing work with Draken. It was as if Wendy didn’t exist. Clearly, he’d already dismissed her from his mind.

  Damn.

  Damn.

  Oh, well.

  Whatever.

A curse on him and all hotties like him.

It was for the best. This incident fixed him permanently in her Garden of Dream Men, along with Draken here, Draken’s sexy cousin, and a few choice others.

  She couldn’t even blame him.

Probably for a man like him, recognizing the existence of geek grunts was hazardous. They’d be suffocating him with their frustrated girl pheromones. It would be a tragic way to go. Nobody deserves that, not even him.

So her axis of rotation had flipped ninety degrees and she was a little dizzy. Her muscles had gone to putty. Her small breasts were peaking as if they’d been pinched. Between her legs was an even sharper pinch. Her lungs were gasping. And she was direly afraid her panties were not functioning as intended.

So that one casual look had thrown a bucket of hormones on her...that was her problem, not his.

Look on the bright side! What if he’d looked at you for fifteen seconds instead of just two? You’d be having convulsive orgasms in an ambulance, headed for the E.R.

“Are you okay?” Charli looked concerned.

“I’m fine.” Wendy gritted her teeth and asked about Charli’s due date. She would not look at him again. She would listen to Charli. Charli was having a girl. Charli’s breasts were tender. Charli’s bladder was small.

Listening to her epic tales of pregnancy, Wendy felt better and a little calmer...until Sir Pussy-Drencher took out his phone. His velvety voice drifted over. “That’s my date. I need to get back to Danielle’s place.”

Charli cut herself off. “The rumor mill says you’ve been dating Cheryl from the hair place on twenty-four.”

Ha! I knew it! He was seeing the blonde.

“Occasionally,” he said in a neutral voice with a brief, cool smile, his gaze scanning right over Wendy’s head as if she weren’t there. “I’m taking off. I’ll send you those screenshots tomorrow.”

“Can’t say I’m looking forward to it,” Draken answered dryly, and Wendy wondered exactly it what it was the man did for Almatto Tech. But then she found out something else she’d been dying to know when Draken added, “Take it easy, Conn.”

“Bye, Conn!” Charli said, and beamed at her husband.

Conn. So that was his name.

  Hmmph.

  Good name.

  It fit him.

Conn, take me harder. Oh, Conn, you are so horny. Conn, Conn, I’m coming!

She sighed. She refused to watch him walk away. Instead, she focused on the CEO. Draken was looking down at his wife with an intent expression. He reached out to stroke her jaw, and an intimate look passed between them that made Charli blush...and Wendy nearly blushed, herself, in sympathy.

  I want that.

I want a man I can light the room on fire with.

Time to go. “Well, I guess…” she began.

An hour later, Wendy exited her favorite supermarket, her hands full of grocery bags containing all the comfort foods she needed on an evening like this. When she arrived back at her apartment building, she parked in the street, walked two blocks, and struggled with bags of groceries along with the backpack on her shoulders.

She checked her mail, waving to the security camera—she lived to wave to train conductors, cruise ships, cameras, drones, and people’s pets (unlike people, there was no disappointment when they failed to wave back). Then she struggled with the key to gain entry to the heavy inner door. She shouldered it open and began the two-flight ascent to her apartment. As she approached the landing, she heard an oddly familiar voice that stopped her in her tracks.

  Could it be…?

  No. Impossible.

Because she could swear it belonged to Mr. Haughty Hottie, otherwise known as Conn.

  CHAPTER 2

  Conn

“TELL ME THE TRUTH. ARE you or are you not cheating on me?” Cheryl demanded.

Conn leaned against the door outside his sister’s apartment, cradling his phone to his ear. He was alone in the hallway. Danielle was inside, making dinner. She’d been living in this apartment building at the recommendation of Draken Almatto’s wife for almost a month now. The neighborhood wasn’t a slum, but it was uninspired and a far cry from the luxury he was used to. It was nowhere near good enough for his sister, as far as he was concerned. He hated to go back home and leave Danielle at the mercy of dickwad neighbors, but with Cheryl going crazy-jealous girlfriend on him, maybe it was time.

Conn usually did his contract work remotely from Portland, but when he took the Almatto job at the same time Danielle had complained that one of her new neighbors was harassin
g her, he’d booked a flight, figuring to kill two birds with one stone.

And he had. He made the short commute to Seven Tech Tower almost daily and found direct access to ATJ’s servers as well as in-person administrative support made his whole job more seamless.

The first night, he’d had a little “talk” with the old weasel two doors down from Danielle’s apartment about keeping his wrinkled dick far away from his little sister. The man had responded well to Conn’s veiled threats—pardon him, persuasion—and agreed to ask the landlord to release his droopy ass from his six-month lease three months early. Conn had bribed the landlord to make sure it would happen. He’d been defending his sassy sister from jerks basically all her life, using any method, fair or foul.

Conn was still here in Seattle only because he enjoyed the relaxed work environment at Almatto Tech Joy. The company made state-of-the-art adult toys the like of which you’d only expect to find in a video game. It amused him to be working for a client of whom his entire wealthy family would disapprove.

Conn came from old money—the Milidonis clan practically owned the town in Maine where he’d grown up. He'd vaguely known Draken Almatto for years. Back on the East Coast, his family had no clue about Draken. The fact that the owner/genius behind Almatto Tech also came from old money would shock them to their core. In their minds, you only honored your family name if you went into medicine, law, or finance. Making sex gadgets was a no-no.

Not that Conn would bother to mention it to them—not unless they annoyed him enough.

Fact was, he liked the atmosphere here. ATJ wasn’t the usual stiff, corporate outfit. Draken Almatto was sharp but easy-going and paid Conn’s lavish fees without a qualm—the ideal client, in fact.

A perk of staying for the duration of the job was the gratification his cock had been receiving. The pretty little blonde he’d taken out a few times while he was here was a stimulating, if scatterbrained, woman. She screamed when she came, she had bouncy tits, and she had a pleasant-sounding laugh, so it was all good. There were equally agreeable women back home, but he was a man of convenience as far as his sex life was concerned.
