“She’s the one who killed Leigh,” Annie reminded her.
“Yes, we have her confession. She confessed to everything before we could even get her out the door. Apparently she also killed her husband in a fit of rage, because he couldn’t satisfy her.”
“Shit,” Annie exclaimed.
“You were very lucky, Ms. Youngblood,” Rogers concluded. “She was planning to leave with you tomorrow for Morocco. That country does not have an extradition treaty with the United States, so our hands would have been tied.”
“It wouldn’t have mattered to me,” Annie asserted.
Trudie looked at her with loving gratitude, and slid her small hand behind Annie’s neck and place her trembling lips on Annie’s.
Slowly, compassionately, Annie kissed her softly until the trembling stopped and the love between them filled the gaps where anxiety and fear once lived.
Epilogue
“And there she is, Trudie Youngblood, the author of the books that started it all. Ms. Youngblood, could I get a word with you?” the announcer called to Trudie.
The red carpet at the movie premiere in Hollywood was not as long as the one used at the Academy Awards, but the excitement from the crowd was just as exhilarating. Trudie, wearing Vera Wang, looked stunning in a violet, strapless silk gown with a plunging neckline. Annie looked striking in a tuxedo with a purple sash and tie, to match Trudie’s eyes.
“Ms. Youngblood, how are you feeling after your terrible ordeal last year?” the announcer asked as if it had happened last week.
“So much has happened since then. As you may have heard, my kidnapper is in prison for the rest of her life for murdering my first wife and stalking me, and now I’m married to this wonderful woman, Annie Nichols, and tomorrow we’re off to Egypt to ride camels.”
Annie grinned and said, “Yeah, she lost the bet, so I got to choose the vacation spot.”
Trudie pulled Annie closer and slipped her hand underneath the jacket, coming to rest under Annie’s pistol harness. Annie always wore her personal weapon now, as part of the job. When she thought she was going to lose Trudie, she let go of some of her pride and agreed to work as Trudie’s security guard. The only thing she asked was that Trudie’s firm pay her, not Trudie personally.
“Intriguing. What was the bet about?”
“Uh…” Annie leaned close to the announcer’s ear and whispered, “To see who could have the longest orgasm.”
The announcer blushed, and then cleared his throat. “Uh, so, are you working on anything new, Trudie?”
For a year, Trudie had worked on her panic disorder, and though she still felt the anxiety when she goes out, she uses the techniques Dr. Chun taught her to face the fear head on. After what Krystal had put her through, she vowed never to be that vulnerable again. She had made it too easy for Krystal to live in her voyeuristic world.
Noella helped also, by seeking Dr. Chun’s advice and disabling her desire to enable. Much to Annie’s dismay, Noella bought the condo beneath Trudie’s, she said so she can keep an eye on Annie. To Annie, if felt more like she was being punished.
As a precaution, and part of what she perceived her job to be, Annie had the condo swept for bugs every month and the computers checked for spyware. She remained in the Air Force Reserves and continued to enjoy pool night with Jeff and the others, and learned the hard way that Trudie was just as good at pool as Annie was.
“Yes, as a matter of fact, Annie and I have started a new book series about romantic adult fairytales,” Trudie announced. “Annie is a very creative story teller.”
“Well, I wish you both much success,” the announcer said. “Enjoy the show.”
As they walked into the theater, Noella, Trudie’s parents and Annie’s mother and her second husband, Donny, went down the aisle to find their seats. Annie stopped Trudie at the door and asked if they couldn’t sit in the balcony and neck. Trudie thought it was a brilliant idea. She made sure no one was looking before darting down a hallway and up the stairway to the balcony. They were the only ones up there and made good use of their seclusion. The audience never knew that the moaning, groaning and screaming weren’t part of the movie’s sound effects, because Annie timed Trudie’s climax with a climactic scene in the movie. And they lived happily ever after.
