“He accused you of being a drug addict?”
“And a prostitute.” May’s hands clenched into fists as she fought back the tears. She had never been so humiliated. “Melissa warned me that when something happened and her mother-in-law was in the wrong, she would play the older lady who wouldn’t hurt a fly. It’s usually successful and she manages to pour poison in everyone’s ear. She had me out to be a drug-addled whore who thought she could get some money or tricks out of telling lies about her.”
She had a feeling the detective had some racist opinions himself, judging from a few subtle digs he made at her. If May had had her head screwed on properly, she would have gone straight to the right department to complain. But she was so embarrassed by the names the detective called her as she left and had wanted to get out of there.
May had come across racism a lot in her life but nothing like that.
“And they seriously believed that?”
Chris still looked incredulous. May nodded miserably.
“The cop certainly seemed to. He practically chucked my statement away and told me to get lost before calling me names as I went through the lobby.” May tore her hands away and buried her face in them. “I even got accused of trying to kidnap William.”
She wanted to lose her temper. But then her emotions went the other way and she wanted to go into hysterics. May had never felt like this before.
And all because she’d been a good Samaritan. That would be the last time she did that.
Chris was silent. Then he rose up on his knees and drew her into his arms, hugging her close. May was too distressed to be shocked. Chris had never been this gentle with her. He wasn’t the cuddling type.
“I’m so sorry.” He whispered, rubbing her back. “I should’ve gone with you.”
“You didn’t know it was going to happen.” May sniffed, taking advantage of her boss’ sweetness and resting her head on his shoulder. “Besides, if you had come they would’ve called you my client and me a gold-digger.”
“Don’t think like that.”
They stayed like that for a few moments. Chris made no move to pull away and May wasn’t about to lose the momentary comfort. Her boss was a strong, tough man who didn’t do the emotional stuff. He kept her strong, especially during her cancer treatments, but he had never done this.
With this and the kiss Chris had given her, May had no idea what was going on between them. And, right now, she didn’t care.
She pulled back and rubbed at her eyes, realizing that some tears had escaped and were streaking down her cheeks.
“I just came to get things I needed to work on at home and go. I shouldn’t be…”
Then Chris was kissing her. It wasn’t forceful, merely a soft touch of his mouth. When May sighed and didn’t pull away, he cupped the back of her head and deepened the kiss. He tasted really good and May wanted to grab him for more.
But this shouldn’t be happening. She managed to pull away, pushing Chris in the chest.
“Please, Chris.”
“What?”
“I shouldn’t be doing this.”
Chris sat back, his hands still in her hair.
“Why not?”
“I’m your PA, nothing more.” May stood and moved away, grabbing at her bag. “Don’t treat me as something more.”
She felt Chris stand and move behind her, his hand touching her hair.
“Am I not allowed to do that?”
May wished he was. She really wished he was. But it could not happen. She gently shied away from his touch instead of giving in and leaning towards him and went to her desk.
“Not as my boss, no.” She found the folder she needed to work on and picked it up, looking everywhere but at Chris. “I’ll get this back to you when I’m done.”
“Stay here.”
But May was shaking her head.
“No. I have to go.”
“Don’t bother.” Chris headed towards the door. “I’m heading out myself. You’ve got the space to get on with what you need to do.” He paused and gave her an expressionless look. “The gym is at your disposal if you want to get rid of some excess energy.”
That sounded very tempting. May managed to give him a smile.
“Thank you.”
Chris grunted and left, the door shutting a little harder than it should behind him.
*****
Chris was furious. How dare the police treat May in that way? They were not supposed to be that unprofessional towards victims, witnesses or even suspects. That went against everything they were taught in the academy, Chris was sure of it.
He was going to make sure, through his contacts, that heads rolled and the one involved would get a boot rammed up his backside.
No one treated May like that and thought it was okay. Not while Chris was about.
Chris tried not to storm into the lobby, not looking at the people hanging around the lobby. There was a pretty Hispanic woman in uniform behind the desk. She looked up and remained professional but her eyes seemed to gleam when she saw him.
“Can I help you, sir?”
“I’d like to speak to the police officer who spoke to May Lucero earlier today.”
“That would be Detective Richter.” The light dimmed a little in the woman’s eyes. “Is there a problem?”
“Only with Detective Richter if he hurries up.”
Chris watched as the sergeant called through and spoke for a few moments on the phone. She hung up, giving him a professional smile but it didn’t reach her eyes.
“Detective Richter will be right out. Will you take a seat?”
“No, thanks. I’ll stand.”
Chris leant against the counter, not bothering to move away. He wasn’t in the mood to play pleasantries with anyone. The sergeant seemed to notice that and left him alone, although the way she looked at him said she wanted him to sit down. Chris was glad she didn’t say anything; he wasn’t in the mood to budge.
It felt like an age before Detective Richter appeared. Chris took a good look at him as the older man came across the room. Mid-forties, six foot and getting the middle age paunch around the middle. He didn’t look bad, barely a gray hair in sight on his blond hair or in his beard.
“You wanted to see me, sir?”
Chris pushed off the front desk. He was on eye-level with the man and could easily take him in a fight. But now was not the place for a fight.
“I did.”
He didn’t take the hand offered to him. Richter seemed to realize after about five seconds that Chris wasn’t going to return the pleasantry and dropped his hand. His smile faded a little.
“Would you like to come through?”
“No, thanks. I’m quite happy to talk him.” Chris folded his arms and glared at the man. “My name is Chris Campbell.”
It took a moment for Richter to recognize the name. Chris knew he was known for being a recluse and his name was well-known with many charities, including the police department.
He wondered what the police chiefs would say if they knew the money Chris donated came from the Russian mob.
“So, you’re the elusive billionaire who donates to us.” Richter smirked. “I didn’t realize May Lucero’s…clients went as high as you.”
“That’s because I’m not one of her clients.” Chris was aware of everyone’s ears pricking up. They liked a good gossip and he was going to give them something. “May is my personal assistant. Has been for the past two years.”
“Really?” Richter sneered.
“Really. Detective, did you do a proper background on May? Did you actually make sure that whatever you were told was actually verified? Because I wouldn’t call that police work at all. No cop would take just one side of the story as gospel.”
Richter didn’t even blink. He looked even bored about it and shoved his hands into his pockets.
“I was told that it was a misunderstanding and the witness Mrs. Monahan’s daughter-in-law said there was would come in trying
to say she had put her grandson in danger.”
“And you believed her? Despite the security footage?”
“That has been misplaced.”
Chris snorted.
“Of course it has. And what about the mother’s statement? The driver’s statement? Statements from the security guards and various other witnesses. May was fast enough to save William Monahan from being hit by a car because of his grandmother’s neglect and she’s the one that gets crucified?” Chris narrowed his eyes. “Why? Because she’s black?”
“Of course not.”
But Chris saw the twitch in the man’s eye. He wasn’t a good liar.
“I think you’d better get more convincing before you get in front of the disciplinary board.”
A few of the people in the lobby started whispering to each other. The sergeant was looking uncomfortable and confused. Richter’s face paled.
“Disciplinary board?”
“Yes. Your boss is a friend of mine. He’s met May and knows perfectly well who she is. Once he finds out you’ve treated my personal assistant like crap when she was trying to do the right thing because you believed a manipulative, abusive lady and your racist views, he’s going to rip you to shreds.” Chris’ voice rose a few notches, aware of a few officers coming through the lobby. “You do know his wife’s black and his children are mixed race, don’t you?”
From what Chris knew of the police chief, he was very protective of his family and would have a fit if he knew what Richter was up to. From the look on Richter’s face, he knew he had messed up. He started to backtrack so rapidly it was almost amusing.
“It…it was just a misunderstanding.”
“Which bit? Because from where I’m standing, all of it was severely taken out of proportion.” Chris shook his head. “Why would you believe the woman who started all of this? Did she remind you of her mother and you think she’s just as innocent?”
That was a shot in the dark but Chris saw the reddening of the man’s cheeks. He hadn’t realized his wild shot had hit closer to the mark. He shook his head in disgust and turned to the desk sergeant, who was now openly staring at them.
“Is Chief Pittman in his office?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I want to see him right now, please.” Chris turned to Richter, whose face was white with red splotches, and gave him a little wave. “Say bye-bye to your badge and the case.”
That last bit was petty but Chris felt like being petty. The man had treated May awfully and this was as close as he could get without laying out the man completely.
*****
May pressed another button to increase the difficulty and pedaled harder as the pressure on the pedals got heavier. She was sweating right through her gym clothes, her hair stuck to her back. Muscles she hadn’t used in a long time were being used and didn’t like it. But she pedaled through it.
Chapter 5
After trying to work through her frustration and find that wasn’t working, May had decided to take Chris up on the offer of using his personal gym. He had told her the first day she arrived that she was allowed to use it to save on the gym membership she had been spending and even had her own locker for her things. May had been eager to use the gym but had always been tired. Then the cancer treatment had started and she couldn’t find the energy beyond the desk.
It was helping to let out some of her anger. May had wished she had been brave enough to lash out at the detective. His attitude had been embarrassing and humiliating and all May wanted to do was get out of there. Pedaling on the bike and the earlier running of the treadmill had helped her pound that out but the anger was still there, bubbling under the surface.
It was going to take a lot more than running it out to feel better.
If only she had been brave enough. Standing up to Sara when she had been using that foul mouth of hers was one thing but to stand up to a police detective was something else. May had a feeling if she had tried to stand up for herself the man would have arrested her and thought of the charges later.
It made her feel sick that people would actually do that.
Eventually, May decided that the cycling wasn’t helping, either. Maybe punching it out on the punch bag would help.
She climbed off the bike and wobbled over to the punching bag, putting on the gloves. At a young woman in college, May had done some boxing and had enjoyed it. It didn’t take long before she had found her old form, making the bag swing wildly as she danced around it, hitting it with solid thuds.
This felt a lot better.
May was aware of someone watching her and from the shiver going up her spine she knew it was Chris. But she didn’t stop; she wasn’t going to stop what she was doing just for him.
Besides, having him watch her like this was, surprisingly, a turn-on.
May stepped back from the bag as it swung her way and looked over. Chris was in the doorway, still wearing his shirt and pants, his coat on but open. He was staring at her with such hunger that May’s pussy tightened enough for her to gasp.
It was then she realized this was the first time Chris had seen her wearing her gym clothes. And it was the most revealing outfit she had ever worn around him, tight sweat pants, bare feet and a sports bra that left her midriff bare. And Chris was staring at her breasts, which were heaving against the bra. May didn’t have to look down to know her nipples were hardening under his gaze.
Chris moved into the gym and closed the door. Then he crossed the room, never taking his eyes off her. May didn’t move. She couldn’t even if she wanted to. Something about Chris always had her rooted to the spot. He had looked at her like this before but never with so much hunger. No man had looked at her like they wanted to eat her up.
This shouldn’t be happening. May knew this shouldn’t even be considered. But as Chris pulled her into his arms and kissed her roughly, she didn’t fight back, her hands fisting in his shirt before her arms went around his neck. Chris pulled back and buried his face in her neck, his hands palming her backside as he suckled at her ear and neck.
“I want you.” He growled.
May shivered. She didn’t want to fight it. Not now.
“You’ve got me.” She whispered, tugging his head up by the hair, forcing a kiss of her own onto him.
Chris made a noise that sounded to have come from his chest and pulled her hard against his body. His hands tightened over her backside as he lifted her off her feet. May wrapped her legs around his waist and gasped as Chris’ erection between her legs, her pussy flexing as it felt his cock through their clothing.
God, she didn’t want this to stop.
Chris started backing up, only for his heel to catch on the mat behind him. He staggered back and the two of them ended up on the floor, Chris cradling May against him. May sat up, cupping Chris’ face in her hands.
“You okay?”
“I’m fine.” Then Chris started laughing. “Not much of a seduction, is it?”
May giggled.
“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe I’ve got you where I want you.”
“Huh?”
Then May was kissing him, her hands deftly undoing the buttons on his shirt. She moved down his body as she undid each button, licking at the hard body underneath. Chris’ laugh turned to a growl and he thrust his erection against her belly. He felt a lot bigger than May had expected.
The thought had her head spinning and she couldn’t stop herself from covering his erection with her hand and giving him a squeeze. Chris gasped, his cock flexing under her palm. May then moved further down his body and tugged off his shoes and socks. Not the most romantic of moves but she wanted him to wear nothing but his own skin against hers.
As she took off his socks, Chris sat up and pulled off his coat, tossing it to the side before his shirt joined it. Then he was grabbing at May, hauling her onto his lap and kissing her, his hands sliding under her bra to cup her breasts. His hands felt very hot. May gasped and arched her back, her nipples tightening even more. Chri
s made her raise her arms and took off the bra. Then his arms were around her and his mouth was on her breasts.
Dear God, if she had known he would be this ferocious, May wouldn’t have pushed him away before. She had always considered herself frisky in bed but this was something else. And it was even more of a turn-on.
Then the world spun and May found herself on her back, the coolness of the mat at her back. Chris paid close attention to one breast and then the other, moving down her body. His tongue dipped in to her belly button before moving down further, his hand tugging at her pants. May lifted her hips and helped him take off her pants and panties.
Then Chris was between her legs, his mouth on her pussy and his tongue lapping at her juice. May whimpered and her back arched off the floor. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been fucked. And she didn’t care to remember right now. The feel of Chris’ mouth on her was too good for words.
Chris’ mouth moved to her clit, two of his fingers thrusting into her pussy. May’s legs tightened around his head as an orgasm started up out of nowhere and built quicker than she anticipated. Her orgasms often took a while to arrive. Not this time. And May didn’t do anything to stop it.
When it hit her, tingles spreading across her back and up her body, May screamed, her body convulsing under Chris’ touch. She didn’t want him to stop but it was getting too much. But he wouldn’t let her come down, letting her ride it out, drawing it out as long as possible.
May didn’t think her body could take much more.
When Chris finally pulled back and let her come down from her high, May managed to open her eyes. She saw Chris standing and unzipping his pants with shaking hands, stripping off the rest of his clothes. Her mouth went dry when she saw his cock, long and thick with moisture at its tip.
She licked her lips. Chris grinned as he knelt between her legs.
“Not now.” He whispered, grasping her legs and hauling her against him. “Maybe later.”
Later. May liked the sound of that.
Then her mind went blank as Chris thrust into her, slamming his pelvis against hers with her legs spread out wide. May could feel her pussy stretching to accommodate him and it sent her whole body into spasms. Chris didn’t give her a chance to adjust, lifting her legs to rest along his chest as he leant over her, almost bending her double.
