Love In Arms_BWWM Romance Page 6

by Erica A. Davis

His thrusts didn’t start off gentle. His tempo was hard and right straight off, pounding into her. With the angle, he seemed to go in deeper and brushed up against nerves inside May that she didn’t know she had. Her body writhed underneath him, grabbing at his arms and trying to hold on as she slid on the mat. Chris took her hands, linking their fingers as he pressed them against the match, his thrusts getting faster. His whole body was tensing up, his breathing getting heavier.

May didn’t know who came first as her second orgasm washed over her, Chris shouting as he thrust one last time into her with a snarl. Then he gently laid her legs down so he was lower himself down, his head resting against her shoulder. May lay there, trying to get her senses back. They were all a jumbled mess.

She had just fucked her boss. Something she had vowed never to do.

But right now, May just didn’t care.

  *****

Chris came out of the bathroom and stood in the doorway, watching May sleep. She was burrowed under the duvet, her hair barely visible as she slept. This was the most relaxed he had ever seen her.

It had been a long time since Chris had seen her this relaxed. Maybe getting her brains fucked to exhaustion did something for her. It had certainly done something to him.

Chris had always known May would be a firecracker during sex. And she hadn’t disappointed. When she gave herself, she gave it all. It had taken a lot of his control not to come too early. That had never happened before. Chris liked to think of himself in control.

May was the only woman who could make him lose it.

His thoughts were interrupted when he heard the doorbell. Glancing at the clock, Chris realized it was gone five. Who was calling at that time of the evening? As far as he was aware, he had no appointments and, even then, his clients knew not to come to the house.

Dressing quickly, Chris hurried down the stairs and opened the door. A handsome Hispanic man in his early fifties with graying black hair wearing a red plaid shirt and jeans stood on the threshold. His badge was clipped to his belt.

  “Chris Campbell?”

  “That’s me.”

“Apologies for bothering you at this time. I’m Detective Jorge Hernandez, Baltimore PD. I was assigned to the Sara Monahan case.”

This was Richter’s replacement? Chris shook the man’s offered hand. He would give him the benefit of the doubt.

  “Come on in.”

Hernandez stepped inside and Chris closed the door. Then he led the older man across to his office. He was aware of the detective taking everything in silently. This man was shrewd and he was sharp. Chris would have to be careful. If Hernandez caught whiff of his dealings, it could be curtains. Chris would protect his clients but it wouldn’t protect him.

“What happened to Detective Richter?” He asked, letting Hernandez into May’s office.

“He was put onto admin leave.” Hernandez gave him a ghost of a smile. “It was either that or be suspended and Richter was close to having the suspension with his objections to the chief. He chose the paid leave.”

“He shouldn’t be paid at all for the way he spoke to May.”

“I know. I overheard him after he spoke to Miss Lucero. He sounded proud of what he had done as well.” Hernandez grinned. “Sergeant Rodriguez said you ripped Richter a new asshole in the lobby. I was out on a call or I would have heard it myself. Quite impressive, she said.”

“I would’ve loved to have ripped more without getting arrested.”

  Hernandez chuckled.

“You and practically everyone else who comes into contact with him.”

Chris indicated for Hernandez to sit on the couch but stayed standing. He wasn’t about to let his guard down yet.

“So, what are you doing about the case now?” he asked.

“I’ve gone over the evidence again.” Hernandez took out a notebook from his back pocket. “I’ve been over to Samantha Gonzales’ apartment and she’s given me her statement.”

“Did Richter even take one from her?”

“Nope. Miss Gonzales was surprised it had taken this long. I’ve also spoken again to Melissa Monahan and the security guards, as well as a few witnesses we managed to find after Richter made the witness list disappear.”

“We were told the footage was missing.”

“I know. I’ve got one of the officers hunting for it now in the evidence room. Wherever it gets found, the person who put it there is going to be in big trouble. Chief Pittman’s overseeing the case and is watching every step.” Hernandez raised his eyebrows. “Is it possible to take Miss Lucero’s statement? I went to her apartment and I couldn’t get an answer.”

“Sure. She’s upstairs sleeping.” Chris went on: “The last few days have completely drained her so I let her use the guest room.”

He was normally good at lying but Hernandez’s expression, along with the glint in his eye, said he didn’t believe him.

  “How is she?”

  “Angry and upset. Mostly angry.”

“I’m not surprised. Would you like to be present while I take her statement?”

“Try and stop me.” Chris opened the door. “I’ll go and wake her.”

He took the stairs to at a time, hurrying into his bedroom. May was still asleep, the duvet having slipped down to show her face. Chris sat on the bed and gently shook her awake.

  “May. Wake up.”

May sighed and rolled onto her back before blinking her eyes open.

  “Chris?”

“There’s a Detective Hernandez downstairs. He’s asking to take your statement about Sara Monahan.”

It took a moment for May to completely wake up. She groaned and burrowed under the duvet.

“I don’t want to be ridiculed anymore.”

“He’s Richter’s replacement. Richter’s not in charge anymore of this. From the sound of it, this guy is doing the right stuff.”

It was a few moments before May sat up with a heavy sigh, clutching the duvet to her.

“Give me a moment to dress.” She gave him a glare. “Alone.”

Chris didn’t argue. He let himself out and went back to May’s office. Hernandez hadn’t moved from the couch, flicking through his notebook as it he was waiting for a train.

  “She’ll be right down.”

“Okay.” Hernandez gave him a half-amused smile. “Does she normally have naps in your home?”

  Chris glared at him.

“Yes. Until recently, she was going through chemotherapy. It took a lot out of her.”

Hernandez’s amusement died away and he nodded in understanding.

“I understand. My sister went through it a few years ago and it’s grueling. How is Miss Lucero?”

  “She’s in remission.”

  “That’s good.”

They waited in awkward silence for a little longer. Chris wasn’t about to discuss his relationship with May, especially not when he had no idea what it meant for them. Would May realize she had done the wrong thing and leave? Chris didn’t want her to go anywhere. He couldn’t stop her but Chris could give it a good try.

Although what did he have to offer for her? Right now it was a prison cell if Hernandez found out what Chris did for a living.

The silence was broken when the door opened and May came in, wearing her office clothes, looking like she had had a shower. There was no sign that she had had a workout in the gym at all.

Or that she had been fucked. Chris swallowed as his cock threatened to make an appearance at the memories and moved to stand behind Hernandez. The detective stood up.

“Miss Lucero.” He held out his hand. “Thank you for speaking to me.”

May was looking at him warily but she took the offered hand. Hernandez urged her to sit and began to take her through her statement. He didn’t ask her any leading questions or make any judgmental statement. May talked him through it, looking more and more relaxed when she realized she wasn’t going to have any comments made at her. The man put her at her
ease.

Chris couldn’t fault the man for that.

Hernandez had been using a recording app on his phone to take the statement. When May finished, he pressed stop and sat up.

“That’s perfect, Miss Lucero. Would you mind if I typed the statement up here and then have you sign it? It would save you coming back to the station.”

“Of course.” May nodded at her desk. “Use my computer.”

Hernandez stood and followed her to the desk. May put her password in and stepped back, allowing Hernandez to take a seat. Chris wasn’t worried about May letting the detective use her computer; she was very methodical and kept things encrypted with a password only she knew. Hernandez wouldn’t be able to get anything even if he tried.

May glanced at Chris as Hernandez opened up a word document and mumbled about going to the bathroom before hurrying out. Chris leant against the wall and watched the back of Hernandez’s head as the man typed away with an efficiency that made Chris embarrassed. He was almost as good as May.

“How on earth do you manage to type so fast?”

  Hernandez grimaced.

“My grandmother said I would get a girl if I knew how to type so she made me learn how to touch-type. I was on a typewriter before computers became big things.”

Chris didn’t think he had ever seen a typewriter.

  “Did it work?”

“Nope. But Mom was pleased I could get my assignments done quicker. I’m even better than my daughter and she’s constantly on social media doing this.”

Hernandez proceeded to use one finger and very slowly find the keys. Chris laughed.

“Teenagers. Can type like wizards on a Blackberry but have no idea about a computer.”

  “Exactly.”

Chris watched as the detective started typing fast again.

“So, what do you think of Sara Monahan?”

  “Officially or unofficially?”

  “Both.”

  Hernandez paused and sighed.

“Officially, she neglected a child and that child was almost hurt. She will be charged with neglect after I’m done.”

“She’s hiding behind the little old lady act.”

  Hernandez snorted.

“She’s barely sixty, not eighty. That doesn’t fly with me. My mother is pushing seventy-five and she’s fitter than I am.” Hernandez shook his head as he started typing again. “Unofficially, if I was her son and with what I’ve found on her in the past, I wouldn’t want her anywhere near my child.”

“Melissa Monahan told May that her husband believes his mother. How can a man believe something like that when there are witnesses to the contrary?”

“Unfortunately, that can happen. I’ve seen it over the years. They are so enmeshed with the parent they will believe anything without question.”

Chris scowled. He was glad he wasn’t like his brother and enmeshed with his parents.

“If he doesn’t cut the umbilical cord, William’s going to be seriously harmed by his grandmother.”

He didn’t need to see Hernandez’s face to know the man was scowling.

  “I do hope not.”

  *****

May stood at the window in the sitting room and watched as Hernandez got in his car and drove off. That hadn’t been as bad as she thought it would be. Hernandez had been very respectful and kind, even patient. Much better than Richter.

She didn’t know what had happened to the other detective and she didn’t care. The bastard was not on the case and that was enough.

  “Hey.”

May jumped. She hadn’t heard Chris come in. He was standing closer than she wished, his body heat making her want to lean into him. She gave him a smile.

  “That was painless.”

“Very painless.” Chris watched the car disappearing down the drive. “He’s a good cop.”

A good cop. And very perceptive. May was sure when Hernandez looked at her that he knew what she and Chris had been up to. What personal assistant slept at her boss’ house? Chris had to have said something to pass it off but Hernandez wasn’t fooled. May swallowed.

  “Do you think he suspected?”

  “About what?”

“What you do for a living.” May wrapped her arms around her waist. “About us.”

Chris moved behind her. May tensed when she felt his hands on her shoulders.

“What I do for a living wouldn’t have been on his radar.” He pressed a kiss to her head. “With regards to us, I think he guessed we’d just shared a bed.”

  Chapter 6

His hands started to move down her arms and May could feel her body responding. She wanted to jump into his arms and have him fuck her against the window right there. But this shouldn’t be happening. It happened once. She wasn’t about to let it happen again.

“Don’t, Chris.” She shrugged him off and moved away. “Don’t.”

“What?” Chris looked confused. He started after her. “May, what’s wrong?”

“I…” May backed away, only stopping when she hit the wall. “I shouldn’t have done that.”

“Done what?” Chris advanced on her. “Sleep with me?”

  “We didn’t sleep. We fucked.”

“Yeah.” Chris leered as he leant his hands on the wall. “Twice.”

He bent his head to kiss her and May turned her head. She wished she didn’t have to. But he was her boss. May had broken every rule in her book sleeping with him. Even if the two times Chris had fucked her, once in the gym and once in his bed, had made her want to beg for more.

  She just couldn’t.

“It should never have happened.” She mumbled. “A moment of weakness for me.”

“A moment of weakness?” Chris raised his eyebrows, his hand going for her breast. “You weren’t showing any signs of weakness.”

“I didn’t mean it like that.” May snapped, pushing his hand away.

  “Then what did you mean?”

She was going to have to be harsh to get him to back off. May steeled herself and forced herself to look at him. “I had an itch I wanted to scratch, okay? And I scratched it. Now I’m starting to regret scratching the itch.” She moved away from the wall and from Chris, feeling the sudden urge to burst into tears. “Listen, it’s best if we carry on as before. Before all this.”

“You mean carry on like I haven’t tasted your sweet flesh?”

  “Yes.”

May could feel her face reddening as she remembered Chris between her legs. Her pussy throbbed at the memory. Chris looked perplexed. He shook his head.

  “How can I forget that?”

“I’m not asking you to do that. But I’m asking you to stop touching me.” May shivered as Chris stared at her. “Stop looking at me like you want to eat me up. We go back to boss and employee. It worked well before. If you can’t do that or refuse to…” May swallowed. “I’ll have to look elsewhere for another job.”

That got Chris’ attention. He looked like he had been slapped.

  “You’d leave me?”

“Yes.” May didn’t want to leave but she couldn’t hang around if they kept crossing the line. If it didn’t work out, it was just going to get very messy. “Treat me like your PA or I’m leaving.”

She watched as Chris’ expression went from shock to anger and finally to blank. He looked like he had been carved out of stone. He nodded stiffly.

“Okay. I’ll do that. I’ll treat you like my employee. That shouldn’t be a problem.”

May was expecting some resistance but not the cold wave of air to hit her in the face. Chris had completely shut down. He walked past her, almost giving her a wide berth, and headed for the door.

“I expect to see you tomorrow, eight-thirty exactly.”

Then he was gone, slamming the door behind him.

  *****

May knew she shouldn’t be upset. She was the one who had laid out the conditions. But to see Chris pull away like that and react that way to her had hurt a lot more than she
anticipated.

She couldn’t be falling for him, could she? They had a good relationship working together and May knew she had a sexual attraction for her boss, which hadn’t abated after a few hours in his bed. But was she falling in love with him as well? May hoped not; that was going to make things even messier.

She was in a low mood when she finally got back to her apartment. Her headaches were coming back and May knew she needed something to eat but the thought of food had her stomach tying up in knots. She couldn’t eat anything the way she was now.

May just wanted to lock the door, curl up in her bed and pretend none of this had happened. But this wouldn’t help. When she woke up, it would all be there still and May knew she was the cause of it.

There were days when she regretted taking the job working for Chris and this was one of them.

May wanted to talk to someone. But Sammie would be at work and Chris wasn’t available since this included him. May wanted to vent her frustrations out to someone. The only person she could do that to was in another time-zone. And May had no idea if he would even be up. Being in Europe currently, things were all over the place.

A quick check of the time said she might just be lucky. It would be one in the morning but May decided to chance it. It was either that or go mad.

Taking her cell phone, May went into the bedroom and huddled under the duvet before she called. It was picked up on the fifth ring and a sleepy voice answered.

  “Hello?”

May couldn’t stop herself from smiling.

  “Hey, bruv.”

“May.” Her brother yawned and she could hear rustling of bed clothes. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

  “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Because it’s one in the morning.”

  May laughed.

“You know I can never get our time differences right. By the time I’ve finished work, you’re in bed.”

“That’s a fair point.” She could hear the warmth in the older brother’s voice. “How did it go? I meant to ring earlier in the week about your appointment. Did it go okay?”
