“And Rowena left this morning!” she exclaimed. “I drove her to the bus station and saw her off. She’ll be back in New Jersey by tomorrow.”

“Are you sure about that? She could still be avoiding that subpoena.”

“She said she was tired of running. Hiding in a garage for three nights and then being stuck in a blizzard at my place with no electricity was enough for her. Lonnie wasn’t worth all that, she said, and she was going to front up and take her chances.”

“I’m just glad we don’t have to deal with her now that I’m home for good.” Curving his arm around her shoulders, he leaned in to kiss her. “I just want to be alone with you, honey.”

A warm thrill ran through Emma. “Sounds perfect to me.”
