  Chapter 1

  June 30

  “Took you long enough,” Rolan hissed without looking up when he heard a knock on his office door Monday morning.

  “Sorry, but I wasn’t aware you wanted to see me,” Cpt. Yardner answered as he approached the desk.

  Rolan frowned as he looked up. “What do you want? And where’s my tea?”

  Before Cpt. Yardner could answer, a timid knock on the door announced the arrival of the tea. The page slipped in, set the cup down on the Rolan’s desk, and scooted back out the door.

  Cpt. Yardner waited while Rolan drank his tea. After Rolan set the cup down, Cpt. Yardner said, “You wanted to know when the bounty hunters were out of North Amden.”

  “So? Where are they?”

  “They’re here, awaiting further orders.”

  Rolan shrugged. “Didn’t do much good to send them out. None of them found out anything. Except the one in South Port, the one who talked to the head elf. What was that man’s name?”

  “Gildan?”
